A vertical immersed chemical pump with no internal shaft seal

The IM 110 is a vertical centrifugal pump in polypropylene or PVDF for fixed installations where the pump hangs directly in the tank or sump. The IM family covers 6 to 75 m3/h, 180 m3/h for the IM 200, and heads up to 40 m; the IM 110 delivers up to 20 m3/h at 15 m. Because the pump uses no internal mechanical seal, it avoids the usual seal wear problem, and the open impeller handles dirty fluids up to 500 cps with solids to 6 mm.

Choosing column length and code

Column length sets how deep the pump can be immersed, and the temperature limit falls as the column gets longer. The manual code, for example IM 95 P V 0800 N, gives the model, the pump material (P polypropylene or F PVDF), the O-ring (D EPDM or V Viton), the column length (0500, 0800, 1000 or 1250) and the motor (N three-phase, A ATEX, S without motor). The motor is carried on a support lantern and connected to the pump by a flexible coupling, which keeps the electrical parts above the liquid.

Dry running and maintenance

The internal ceramic bushing that supports the shaft is a wear part. The IM manual warns that dry operation damages the ceramic bushing, and that air retention caused by turbulence or too little immersion can have the same effect. Install the pump vertically, fixed with bolts through the holes in its mounting plate, with the suction inlet at least 100 mm above the tank bottom and the liquid level at least 0.5 m above the minimum level. The manual forbids using the IM as a self-priming pump: the inlet must always be immersed and away from vortices or turbulence. Check that no dirt or deposits at the tank bottom can obstruct the suction, that the connecting pipes are resistant and do not hang their weight on the pump, and have the bushing inspected periodically. Because the pump is immersed, every material in contact with the tank liquid must be chemically compatible, and for aggressive, toxic or hazardous fluids the manual calls for a protective device that contains the product in case of leakage.
