Grundfos TPE3 In-Line Circulator Pump
Overview
The Grundfos TPE3 is a single-stage, close-coupled in-line centrifugal pump with a permanent-magnet motor, an integrated frequency converter and a built-in differential-pressure and temperature sensor. Because the sensor is inside the pump, it can control itself to the actual system demand without an external transmitter or a separate variable-speed drive panel. Grundfos designs the TP and TPE family for district heating and district cooling, air-conditioning, heating, water supply, industrial processes and industrial cooling, and the Grundfos TPE3 is the most fully featured member of that family, available as a single-head pump and as the twin-head TPE3 D.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Grundfos TPE3 to HVAC contractors, district cooling operators and facility owners in the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Our Muscat engineers review your flow, head, flange rating and voltage, help you choose between single-head and twin-head versions, and confirm the complete type code so the pump drops into the chilled-water or condenser-water line without site modification.
Operating Principle of the Grundfos TPE3
The Grundfos TPE3 works like any in-line volute pump: water enters the inlet flange, the impeller adds energy and the pump housing guides the flow to an outlet flange on the same axis. The difference is in the drive. The MGE permanent-magnet motor has a built-in frequency converter that adjusts speed continuously, so the pump can run at any duty point between its minimum and maximum curves. The built-in sensor measures the differential pressure across the pump and the liquid temperature, giving the controller the information it needs to estimate flow and choose the right speed.
Out of the box the pump is set to AUTOADAPT, which continuously adapts the performance to the actual system characteristic. Other control modes include FLOWADAPT, which combines AUTOADAPT with a FLOWLIMIT maximum flow, proportional pressure, constant differential pressure, constant pressure, constant temperature, constant differential temperature, constant flow rate and constant level. Grundfos explains that matching speed to the real load keeps energy consumption at a minimum, reduces valve noise and removes the need to throttle flow with balancing valves, which is where most of the savings in a variable-flow chilled-water system come from.
Engineering Design of the Grundfos TPE3
Grundfos divides the range into Small, Medium and Large frames. The Small frame covers flows up to 120 m³/h and heads up to 25 m, while Medium and Large frames extend to 565 m³/h and 78 m. On the Small frame the power head (motor, pump head and impeller) and the pump housing are held together by a clamp that allows fast repositioning of the housing and quick service. Housings are cast iron EN-GJL-250, or stainless steel EN 1.4308 on the I version for hot-water recirculation; impellers are composite on the Small and Medium frames and cast iron or stainless steel on the Large frame. All pumps have an unbalanced mechanical shaft seal with silicon carbide faces and EPDM elastomers, and the flanges are PN 6, PN 10 or PN 16.
The twin-head Grundfos TPE3 D has two parallel power heads in one housing, with a flap valve in the common outlet that is opened by the flow and prevents backflow into the idle head, giving built-in duty/standby or alternating operation. The motor terminal box carries a colour display with an advanced control panel for setup and access to all functions, and the pump also communicates with the Grundfos GO app. For building management, Grundfos CIM modules fit directly in the terminal box, including LonWorks, PROFIBUS DP, Modbus RTU, BACnet MS/TP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, BACnet IP, EtherNet/IP and cellular remote monitoring.
Key Features of the Grundfos TPE3
The data booklet lists these advantages for the Grundfos TPE3.
- Built-in differential-pressure and temperature sensor, so no external sensor or separate drive panel is needed for standard HVAC control.
- Permanent-magnet MGE motors with motor efficiency class IE5 according to IEC 60034-30-2 on all pumps up to 22 kW.
- AUTOADAPT as the factory setting, plus FLOWADAPT, FLOWLIMIT and automatic night setback for heating and cooling circuits.
- Heat energy monitoring and flow rate estimation from the internal sensor, useful for energy reporting without a separate meter.
- Constant pressure, constant temperature, constant differential temperature, constant flow and constant level modes for process duties.
- Multipump function that controls up to four single-head pumps in parallel, or a twin-head pump, through wireless GENIair or wired GENI without an external controller.
- Single-head TPE3 and twin-head TPE3 D versions with PN 6, PN 10 or PN 16 flanges.
- Liquid temperature range from -25 to +120 °C, covering glycol chilled-water loops as well as hot-water heating and recirculation.
Industrial Applications
In Oman the largest use of in-line pumps is cooling. District cooling plants serving Muscat developments, airports, universities and mixed-use waterfront projects circulate chilled water through long networks where load changes through the day, and the Grundfos TPE3 constant-flow and proportional-pressure modes fit primary and secondary loops at chillers, heat exchangers and energy transfer stations. In hotels, hospitals, malls and office towers the pump serves fan-coil and air-handling unit circuits, where the differential-pressure control replaces throttled balancing valves and lowers pumping energy during the many part-load hours of the year.
The Grundfos TPE3 also suits domestic hot-water recirculation in hotel and hospital towers (the stainless steel I version), process cooling loops in food and beverage plants in Rusayl and Sohar, and cooling-water circuits for gas-turbine auxiliaries, compressors and data centres. The constant-level and constant-temperature modes also cover condensate and process-tank duties. Seven Star LLC supplies the Grundfos TPE3 on request with engineering support in Muscat, alongside the Grundfos MAGNA3 circulator for smaller wet-rotor duties.

The nameplate shows a type designation, a product number and a production code. The product number is the surest reference for an identical pump or for the correct spare kit, so send it with the model line. For a new selection give the flow and head, the liquid with its temperature and any solids or chemicals, suction conditions, motor voltage, phase and frequency, and the pipe connections. For an SP pump add the borehole diameter, static and dynamic water level and the cable length. For a DME state the dosing rate, back pressure and chemical.Browse Grundfos products by category: Pumps.
