KSB Movitec Vertical High-Pressure In-Line Pump

Overview

The KSB Movitec is a vertical high-pressure in-line pump in ring-section design, with suction and discharge nozzles of the same nominal diameter arranged opposite each other so the pump can be dropped straight into a pipe run. It is a close-coupled, non-self-priming centrifugal pump built from one to thirty stages, driven by an IE3 motor as standard or by the magnetless KSB SuPremE synchronous reluctance motor for IE4/IE5 efficiency. KSB lists pressure boosting, water supply, irrigation, fire-fighting, washing plants, industrial plants, HVAC and marine systems among its main applications, and the V, VS and VC designs reach up to 160 m³/h, 249 m head and a pressure class of PN 40.

Operating Principle of the KSB Movitec

In the KSB Movitec the fluid enters the inlet nozzle in the pump foot, rises through a stack of identical stage casings and leaves through the outlet nozzle on the opposite side of the same foot. Each stage has an impeller and a diffuser; the impeller adds velocity and the stage casing converts it into pressure, so the total head is the sum of the stage heads and can be matched to the duty by choosing the number of stages. All stages share one shaft driven by the standard motor mounted on top, and the hydraulic parts are lubricated and cooled by the pumped fluid through product-lubricated stage bearings of tungsten carbide and aluminium oxide.

Where inlet conditions are critical, for example a boiler feed pump drawing from a degassing tank, KSB offers a newly developed impeller for lower NPSH values with a modified stage casing. It reduces the risk of cavitation, which would otherwise shorten the pump life, wear the motor bearings and starve the mechanical seal of cooling. KSB states that the low-NPSH impeller needs no change to installation heights or nozzles and only slightly adjusts the characteristic curve. For variable-demand duties the pump can be combined with KSB PumpDrive variable speed control and the PumpMeter monitoring unit.

Engineering Design of the KSB Movitec

Four KSB Movitec material designs are available. The V design uses stainless steel 1.4301 (AISI 304) hydraulics, the VS and LHS designs use 1.4404 (AISI 316L) for more aggressive water, and the VC design combines stainless hydraulics with a grey cast iron EN-GJL-250 pump casing. The shaft is 1.4057 on the standard designs, the drive lantern is grey or ductile cast iron, and O-rings are EPDM with drinking-water approvals or FPM and HNBR for other fluids. Connections include oval and round flanges to EN 1092, ASME B16.1/B16.5 or JIS, internal and external threads, Victaulic couplings and Tri-Clamp fittings, which makes the pump easy to integrate in steel, stainless or grooved pipework.

The KSB Movitec accepts any standardised mechanical seal to EN 12756. Besides the fixed unbalanced bellows seal (up to 25 bar), KSB offers an Easy Access seal and a cartridge seal in unbalanced (PN 25) or balanced (PN 40) design; with these, the drive lantern stays in place during seal replacement and on motors from 5.5 kW the motor need not be removed. Standard motors are surface-cooled squirrel-cage motors to IP55 and thermal class F, rated 3~230/400 V up to 2.2 kW and 3~400/690 V from 3 kW, with PTC thermistors from 3 kW. Each pump is pressure tested to EN 809 and leak tested with water, and the duty point is guaranteed to ISO 9906 Grade 3B.

Industrial Applications

Across Oman the KSB Movitec is used wherever a compact pump has to deliver high pressure from a small footprint. Typical duties are pressure boosting for residential and commercial buildings, feeding RO membrane skids and cartridge filters in desalination and water-treatment units, boiler feed and condensate return in hotels, hospitals and industrial steam plants, and supply to washing plants and fire-fighting jockey duties. Spray and drip irrigation systems for landscaping and farms in Al Batinah and Dhofar benefit from the KSB Movitec wide head range and the corrosion-resistant stainless hydraulics.
