ABB ACS550-01-045A-4 ACS550 22 kW Frame R3 AC Drive

Description

ACS550-01-045A-4 at 45 A: what this ACS550 drive offers

The ABB ACS550-01-045A-4 is a wall-mounted ACS550-01 general purpose drive for 380 to 480 V three-phase supplies. In ABB’s rating chart it carries 45 A at normal use for a 22 kW motor, and it is built in frame R3.

Typical applications are pumps, fans and constant-torque machines such as conveyors, where adjustable speed and simple commissioning matter more than special product engineering.

What the rating chart says

The IP21 (UL type 1) drive is 203 mm wide and 231 mm deep, 490 mm high without the connection box (583 mm with it), and weighs 16 kg. The optional IP54 (UL type 12) version measures 629 x 257 x 254 mm and weighs 17 kg.

Typical full-load dissipation is 667 W, cooled by 134 m3/h; noise is 67 dB. ABB’s fuse table gives 50 A (gG) and 60 A (UL class T). Frame R3 has no internal brake chopper, so dynamic braking needs external equipment.

The drive tolerates -15 C to +40 C in normal operation, 5 to 95% humidity and 0 to 1000 m altitude without derating. Allow 200 mm clearance top and bottom; side-by-side mounting needs no gap.

Normal use: 45 A, 22 kW (30 hp in NEMA terms). Heavy duty: 38 A, 18.5 kW. Both belong to frame R3, and the nominal motor frequency range for the drive is 10 to 500 Hz.

ACS550 drives carry a swinging choke that ABB says reduces harmonics, coated circuit boards for harsh environments and an internal category C2 filter, so no external filter is needed for first-environment limits.

Reading the ACS550-01-045A-4 order code

In ACS550-01-045A-4, ACS550 is the series, 01 the wall-mounted construction, 045A the size code and 4 the 380 to 480 V range. Options follow with plus signs: +B055 for IP54 (UL type 12), +0J400 for no panel, +J404 for the basic panel, +L511 for the OREL-01 relay extension, +K451 for RDNA-01 DeviceNet, +K454 for RPBA-01 PROFIBUS DP and +K466 for the RETA-01 Ethernet module.

If this drive is a replacement in an existing panel, measure the mounting holes and the free height as well as the power. Frame size decides the fixing points, cable entry and cooling clearance, so checking them first avoids rework at installation. Quote us the motor current and supply voltage so the rating can be matched.

Installing the ACS550-01-045A-4 in a panel or on a wall

Plan the mounting position around the cooling requirements given above. The drive dissipates a significant amount of heat at full load, and that heat must leave the enclosure or room through ventilation or air-conditioning sized by the panel designer. Respect the top and bottom clearances so that cooling air can enter and leave freely, and avoid mounting the drive directly above other heat-producing equipment. A vertical, rigid mounting surface free from strong vibration is preferred.

Power cabling should be sized and protected according to the fuse data in the catalogue and local wiring regulations. Use a motor cable type suited to variable-speed drives, keep motor and supply cables separated from control and communication wiring, and follow the ABB earthing and cable screen instructions to get the expected EMC performance from the built-in C2 filter.

Motor and application checks

Before ordering or installing, compare the motor nameplate current with the normal-use and heavy-duty ratings. A pump or fan normally fits the normal-use rating, while a conveyor or other machine with high starting torque may need the heavy-duty figure. If the application needs fast stopping or regularly overhauls the motor, remember that this frame has no internal brake chopper, so braking requirements must be addressed separately.

Commissioning the drive

Commissioning follows the ABB user manual. Enter the motor nameplate data, select the control mode and the application macro closest to the duty, and set acceleration, deceleration and speed limits that suit the driven equipment. Where possible, run the motor uncoupled first to check rotation direction, then couple it and verify operation across the speed range. If the built-in Modbus link or a fieldbus module is used, confirm communication and the start, stop and reference signals from the control system before handover.

Save a record of the final parameter settings with the panel documentation. This makes it much easier to restore the configuration after a replacement or a fault investigation.

Operating the ACS550 in Oman and GCC heat

The rating chart allows normal operation up to +40 C without derating, which is lower than many outdoor summer temperatures in Oman. Drives installed in pump stations, plant rooms or field panels therefore need careful attention to enclosure cooling, shading from direct sun and the temperature inside the panel rather than only the outside air. Where higher ambient temperatures cannot be avoided, check the derating information in the ABB documentation at the design stage.

Fine dust is the other major concern in Gulf installations. The standard IP21 enclosure is intended for clean electrical rooms; for dustier locations, the IP54 option or a suitably filtered and sealed panel is worth considering. Keep enclosure ventilation openings clean so that airflow is not reduced over time.

Preventive maintenance

Routine maintenance should follow the intervals in the ABB manual. Typical tasks include checking the cooling air paths for dust build-up, verifying tightness of power terminals during planned shutdowns, reviewing the fault and event history and confirming that the drive room or panel cooling is working as designed.

About brand

ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.

ABB product families on this page

Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.

Where ABB instruments and drives are used

Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.

Ordering ABB parts: what we need

For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
