ABB TU810V1 S800 I/O Compact Module Termination Unit

Description

The 3BSE013230R1 is the S800 I/O Compact Module Termination Unit TU810V1 from ABB, a base that carries an S800 I/O module and provides its field wiring terminals. ABB’s product page describes it as a compact unit with 2 x 8 signal terminals. It is a terminal-block unit rated 50 V, with process power connections, and it is keyed so that only the correct module type fits. S800 modules are listed under PLC and I/O cards; the existing DI810/DO810 module set is one pair that mounts on it.

S800 I/O modules that use the TU810V1

ABB lists the TU810V1 for a wide set of modules: analog inputs AI810, AI815, AI820, AI830, AI830A, AI835, AI835A and AI845; analog outputs AO810, AO810V2, AO815, AO820, AO845 and AO845A; digital inputs DI810, DI811, DI814, DI830, DI831, DI840, DI880 and DI885; digital outputs DO810, DO814, DO815, DO840 and DO880; and pulse counters DP820 and DP840. It is therefore the general-purpose compact base for 50 V class channels, whereas the extended TU830V1 adds fused sensor power and more terminals.

Selecting between compact and extended units

A compact MTU keeps the module row narrow. Choose the compact TU810V1 when field devices are wired one terminal pair per channel and the process power can be fed through the 2 x 2 and 5 x 2 terminals. Choose an extended unit such as the TU830V1 when transmitters need individually fused supply or when the extra terminals simplify wiring. Check the module keying code of the module you are mounting; the MTU is keyed so only the intended module type fits.

Installation, environment and system context

ABB gives the TU810V1 two temperature limits, 55 C for horizontal mounting and 40 C for vertical mounting, and the unit can be installed in both directions on the DIN rail. The AI810 data sheet adds that 40 C applies to compact MTUs with I/O modules on a vertical DIN rail and that approvals were issued for +5 to +55 C. In ABB’s description of the S800 I/O system, modules and MTUs can be installed in the field close to sensors and actuators, which reduces cabling cost, and features such as hot swap of modules and on-line reconfiguration help keep a plant running. The unit meets RoHS under EN 50581:2012 and the WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU.

Planning the I/O cluster before installation

An MTU is a small part, but it fixes the wiring of every channel it carries, so it is worth planning the S800 I/O row on paper before anything is mounted. List each module position, the module type that will sit on it, and the field devices wired to its terminals. This makes it easy to see where the compact TU810V1 is sufficient and where an extended unit is the better fit, and it gives the panel builder a clear terminal plan to work from.

Leave space on the DIN rail and in the cable ducts for later additions. Plants often add a few signals during commissioning or later projects, and a cluster with no spare positions forces awkward wiring or a second cabinet. Mark spare positions on the drawings so that the next engineer knows they are reserved.

Mounting the unit on the rail

Fit the MTU to a clean, properly earthed DIN rail and make sure it engages with its neighbour so that the module bus continues from unit to unit. Respect the temperature limits for the mounting direction chosen, and keep cable ducts far enough away that the module latch and terminals stay accessible. Label the unit and its terminals clearly before field cables are connected.

Wiring and loop checks

Strip field conductors to the length needed for the terminal blocks and use ferrules where the site standard calls for them. Route process power and signal wiring neatly, keep higher-voltage cabling out of the same duct, and tighten every terminal to the value given in the ABB documentation. Loose terminals are a common source of intermittent signals that are hard to trace once the plant is running.

With the module removed, the terminals can be checked from the field side. Perform loop checks channel by channel against the I/O list, confirming that each signal arrives at the right terminal and that the process power distribution is correct. Only then insert the module and verify the signal in the controller. Record the results on the loop sheets so the commissioning file shows each channel as tested.

Service and replacement on running plants in Oman

Oil, gas, power and water facilities in Oman often keep S800 I/O in service for many years, sometimes in field enclosures that see heat and dust. Inspect cabinet cooling and filters regularly, as high internal temperatures affect every module in the row, and check that enclosure seals still keep dust out after maintenance visits.

Because the module is keyed to its base, a replacement module of the wrong type cannot be inserted by mistake, but the MTU itself must still match the existing one. When a base is damaged, compare the type designation and article number on the unit with this page before ordering, and plan the exchange for a time when the affected channels can be taken out of service, since the field wiring has to be moved to the new unit.

About brand

ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.

ABB product families on this page

Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.

Where ABB instruments and drives are used

Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.

Ordering ABB parts: what we need

For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
