Schneider Electric TM221CE40R Modicon M221 40 I/O Relay

Description

TM221CE40R a 40 I/O Modicon M221 controller with relay outputs

The TM221CE40R is a Schneider Electric product listed in the datasheet as: logic controller, Modicon M221, 40 IO, relay, Ethernet. The TM221CE40R is the larger relay-output Modicon M221 with 24 inputs and 16 relay outputs, powered directly from 100 to 240 V AC. It is the controller chosen for small machines and building systems that want to switch AC loads and small contactors without extra interposing relays. Seven Star LLC supplies the TM221CE40R in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.

Decoding the reference: CE means compact with Ethernet, 40 is the I/O count and R marks relay outputs. The datasheet states 24 discrete inputs, 16 normally open relay outputs and two 0 to 10 V analogue inputs.

Supply voltage: 100 to 240 V AC. Supply voltage limits: 85 to 264 V. Network frequency: 50/60 Hz. Discrete inputs: 24, discrete input IEC 61131-2 Type 1. Discrete outputs: 16 relay. Discrete I/O: 40. Analogue inputs: 2 0 to 10 V. Input resolution: 10 bits. Input voltage: 24 V. Output type: Relay normally open. Output voltage: 5 to 125 V DC; 5 to 250 V AC. Output current: 2A. Ethernet: 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX 1 100 m copper cable. Communication protocols: USB port USB – SoMachine-Network; Non isolated serial link Modbus master/slave – RTU/ASCII or SoMachine-Network; Ethernet. Output current: 0.52 A 5 V expansion bus; 0.24 A 24 V expansion bus. Output voltage: 125 V DC; 277 V AC. Mechanical durability: 20000000 cycles relay output. Electrical durability: 100000 cycles AC-12, 120 V, 240 VA, resistive; 100000 cycles AC-12, 240 V, 480 VA, resistive; 300000 cycles AC-12, 120 V, 80 VA, resistive.

The relay outputs switch 5 to 125 V DC or 5 to 250 V AC, with 2 A per output and a maximum of 7 A per common group. Relay response is about 10 ms, so they are not for fast pulse tasks; the datasheet shows fast inputs for counting but no fast outputs on this model.

Power comes from 100 to 240 V AC with limits of 85 to 264 V and 50/60 Hz, with an inrush of 40 A. Consumption is 41 VA without expansion and 70 VA with the maximum expansion, and the controller provides 0.52 A at 5 V and 0.24 A at 24 V for the expansion bus.

Choosing between relay and transistor models

A relay controller removes the need for separate supply for outputs and allows mixed voltages on one controller. It is robust against wiring errors, but relays wear with each switch and the life depends on the load, so heavy and fast cycles should use transistor models such as the TM221CE24T.

The 40 I/O size is the largest compact base in the family, and with TM3 modules it can reach a system of over a hundred points. Compared with the 16 I/O TM221M16R, it has three times as many inputs and is intended for larger small machines.

Selection checklist for the TM221CE40R

  • Supply: 100 to 240 V AC without a separate power supply.
  • I/O: 24 inputs and 16 relay outputs.
  • Load type: resistive or inductive, 2 A per output, 7 A per group.
  • Output life: estimate switching frequency and use a suppressor on inductive loads.
  • Communication: Ethernet, plus serial options as listed in the datasheet.
  • Expansion: TM3 modules and cartridges as needed.

Installation and service of the TM221CE40R

Mount on DIN rail or panel with clearance for ventilation and keep the AC mains wiring separate from DC signal cables. Use the supplied terminals for the right wire size, and mark every cable at both ends.

Relay outputs are the first item to wear. Keep a spare, record operation counts of heavy outputs, and consider a plug-in relay stage for loads that switch often.

Typical applications of the TM221CE40R in Oman and the GCC

In Oman and the GCC, AC-powered M221 controllers suit pump stations, HVAC plant rooms, gates and workshop machinery, where 230 V is readily available and loads are switched directly. Voltage fluctuations and surges should be considered with a surge protector at the panel.

About brand

Schneider Electric is the French group for energy management and industrial automation: low and medium voltage switchgear and circuit breakers, motor control, drives, PLCs, power monitoring, UPS systems and building management. Its history goes back to 1836, when the brothers Adolphe and Eugène Schneider took over the iron and steel works at Le Creusot in Burgundy. Over the 20th century the company left steel and heavy engineering and became an electrical group through acquisitions such as Merlin Gerin, Télémécanique, Square D and Modicon. Its head office is in Rueil-Malmaison near Paris, and its shares are listed on Euronext Paris.

Milestones

  • 1836: The Schneider brothers acquire the Le Creusot works; the business grows in steel, locomotives and heavy engineering.
  • 1975: First investment in Merlin Gerin, a French maker of electrical distribution equipment.
  • 1988–1992: Télémécanique, Square D (USA) and Merlin Gerin join the group, making it an electrical specialist.
  • 1997: Modicon, the company behind the first programmable logic controller, joins the group.
  • 1999: The group takes the name Schneider Electric.
  • 2007 and 2014: APC (UPS and data centre power) and Invensys (process automation) are acquired.

Choosing Schneider Electric breakers and motor control

Circuit breakers are chosen by current and breaking capacity. Acti9 miniature circuit breakers (iC60, C120) protect final circuits up to 125 A. ComPacT NSX molded case breakers cover about 16 to 630 A, and the letter after the frame size sets the breaking capacity: B, F, N, H, S, L from lowest to highest. MasterPacT air circuit breakers are used as main incomers on large switchboards. For motors, a TeSys contactor with an LRD overload relay or a GV2 motor circuit breaker suits direct starting, an Altistart soft starter reduces starting current, and an Altivar drive controls speed. The breaking capacity must always be at least the prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation.

Where Schneider Electric products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Schneider Electric equipment is found in main and sub-main switchboards of commercial and residential buildings, motor control centres in water, oil and gas and industrial plants, substations protected by Sepam and Easergy relays, data centres powered by Galaxy and APC UPS systems, and buildings controlled by EcoStruxure Building Operation.

APC by Schneider Electric: UPS and critical power

Since 2007, APC has been part of Schneider Electric and is now its product brand for uninterruptible power supplies, replacement batteries, battery packs, network management cards and rack power distribution. Our APC catalogue covers Smart-UPS line-interactive and on-line models, Easy UPS On-Line, the modular Symmetra LX, RM and PX ranges, Silcon three-phase systems and their spare part kits, and the RBC cartridges that keep them running.
