Schneider Electric BMEH582040 M580 Redundant Processor 8 MB

Description

BMEH582040 M580 redundant processor for hot standby systems

The BMEH582040 is a Schneider Electric product listed in the datasheet as: redundant processor, Modicon M580, 8MB, 61 Ethernet devices, 8 local racks, 8 remote IO racks [TAA]. The BMEH582040 is the redundant processor of the Modicon M580 platform. Two identical processors run in a hot-standby pair, so that the control task continues when one unit or its power supply fails. It is meant for plants where an outage is costly. Seven Star LLC supplies the BMEH582040 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.

Reading the reference: BME is the M580 platform and H58 the hot-standby processor series; the title in the datasheet states 8 MB memory, 61 Ethernet devices and 8 remote I/O drops. The same number repeats in each processor of the pair.

How a redundant pair behaves and what the BMEH582040 provides

Racks: 1. Remote I/O stations: 8 – 2 X80 remote drop. Distributed devices: 64. Memory: Expandable flash, 4 GB data storage; Integrated RAM, 10 kB system memory; Integrated RAM, 8 MB program; Integrated RAM, 768 kB data. Services: DIO scanner; RIO scanner. Cybersecurity: DoS prevention; IPSec; SNMP logging; Syslog protocol support; Transport layer security; Audit trail; Embedded firewall; Firmware signature. Reliability: 650000 H.

In a hot-standby system the primary processor runs the logic while the standby copy follows through a dedicated link. On a failure of the primary, the standby takes control with a bumpless transfer that depends on the scan time and the process variable handling. Retained variables and system bits move across the link.

Sync link, rack and I/O architecture of the BMEH582040

A redundant system needs two racks with identical modules, a synchronisation link between the processors and Ethernet remote I/O drops, since local racks are not redundant. The datasheet lists remote I/O stations, distributed devices and the communication services.

Design the network as a ring or dual network so that a single cable failure does not defeat the redundancy. Document what is redundant and what is not before the project is accepted.

Selection and ordering checklist for the BMEH582040

  • Two processors are needed for one redundant pair, ordered with identical firmware.
  • Number of remote I/O drops required.
  • Ethernet architecture: rings and switches.
  • Engineering software with redundancy support.
  • Need for high-availability rack power supplies.
  • Plan for online firmware upgrade procedure.

Commissioning and testing the BMEH582040

Install both processors, connect the sync link, configure the redundancy in the engineering software and download. Perform a switchover test under controlled conditions, then simulate the loss of a processor power supply.

Include the switchover test in the factory acceptance test and repeat it at site acceptance. Keep both processors at the same firmware level and keep a documented procedure for replacing one half without stopping the process.

Typical applications of the BMEH582040 in Oman and the GCC

Typical use is on critical utilities: power-plant auxiliaries, gas-compression control, water-treatment trains and pumping stations where trips are expensive. A redundant PLC adds hardware but not by itself a safety function, so do not use it as a substitute for a safety system.

Dimensions, environment and approvals of the BMEH582040

The BMEH582040 weighs 0.849 kg. Mounting, derating and enclosure choices follow the environmental data below, which should be compared with the actual panel temperature and the dust and humidity of the site in Oman and the GCC.

Ambient temperature limits in the datasheet: -40 to 85 °C. Relative humidity: 5 to 95 % 55 °C without condensation. Ingress protection: IP20. Operating altitude: 0 to 2000 m; 2000 to 5000 m with derating factor. Vibration resistance: 3 gn. Shock resistance: 30 gn. Standards listed: IEC 61131-2; IEC 61010-2-201; UL 61010-2-201; CSA C22.2 No 61010-2-201; IACS E10; EN/IEC 61000-6-5, interface type 1 and type 2. About brand

Schneider Electric is the French group for energy management and industrial automation: low and medium voltage switchgear and circuit breakers, motor control, drives, PLCs, power monitoring, UPS systems and building management. Its history goes back to 1836, when the brothers Adolphe and Eugène Schneider took over the iron and steel works at Le Creusot in Burgundy. Over the 20th century the company left steel and heavy engineering and became an electrical group through acquisitions such as Merlin Gerin, Télémécanique, Square D and Modicon. Its head office is in Rueil-Malmaison near Paris, and its shares are listed on Euronext Paris.

Milestones

  • 1836: The Schneider brothers acquire the Le Creusot works; the business grows in steel, locomotives and heavy engineering.
  • 1975: First investment in Merlin Gerin, a French maker of electrical distribution equipment.
  • 1988–1992: Télémécanique, Square D (USA) and Merlin Gerin join the group, making it an electrical specialist.
  • 1997: Modicon, the company behind the first programmable logic controller, joins the group.
  • 1999: The group takes the name Schneider Electric.
  • 2007 and 2014: APC (UPS and data centre power) and Invensys (process automation) are acquired.

Choosing Schneider Electric breakers and motor control

Circuit breakers are chosen by current and breaking capacity. Acti9 miniature circuit breakers (iC60, C120) protect final circuits up to 125 A. ComPacT NSX molded case breakers cover about 16 to 630 A, and the letter after the frame size sets the breaking capacity: B, F, N, H, S, L from lowest to highest. MasterPacT air circuit breakers are used as main incomers on large switchboards. For motors, a TeSys contactor with an LRD overload relay or a GV2 motor circuit breaker suits direct starting, an Altistart soft starter reduces starting current, and an Altivar drive controls speed. The breaking capacity must always be at least the prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation.

Where Schneider Electric products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Schneider Electric equipment is found in main and sub-main switchboards of commercial and residential buildings, motor control centres in water, oil and gas and industrial plants, substations protected by Sepam and Easergy relays, data centres powered by Galaxy and APC UPS systems, and buildings controlled by EcoStruxure Building Operation.

APC by Schneider Electric: UPS and critical power

Since 2007, APC has been part of Schneider Electric and is now its product brand for uninterruptible power supplies, replacement batteries, battery packs, network management cards and rack power distribution. Our APC catalogue covers Smart-UPS line-interactive and on-line models, Easy UPS On-Line, the modular Symmetra LX, RM and PX ranges, Silcon three-phase systems and their spare part kits, and the RBC cartridges that keep them running. Schneider Electric breakers, drives and PLCs can be quoted together with APC UPS systems in one request.
