Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier EQP Safety System Controller

Description

Overview

The Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier (EQP) controller is the central processing unit of the Det-Tronics EQP fire and gas safety system. It monitors and supervises flame and gas detectors, reports and annunciates alarms, drives local and remote notification, and initiates extinguishing agent release and deluge operation, all through a single fault-tolerant digital network. The controller is approved as an annunciation and releasing device for fire alarm systems under NFPA 72, meets FM and CSA guidelines as part of an approved gas detection system, and is offered in SIL 2 capable versions certified to IEC 61508. According to Det-Tronics, EQP safety systems have been operating in harsh process environments for more than four decades.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier controller, its I/O modules and compatible field devices to oil and gas, petrochemical, power and infrastructure projects in Oman and the GCC. As a trusted supplier with engineering support in Muscat, we help system integrators and end users scope controller hardware, network devices and spares for new installations, expansions and life-cycle upgrades.

Operating Principle

All field devices in the system share a Local Operating Network / Signaling Line Circuit (LON/SLC), a two-wire digital loop that starts and ends at the controller. The Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier controller continuously polls each device on the loop, collects detector status, gas readings and input states, and executes the logic required to drive outputs. Because the loop is closed, a single open circuit or short circuit does not interrupt communication: the fault isolation circuitry in the nodes either side of the problem isolates the damaged section, the controller annunciates the fault, and data continues to flow the other way around the loop until repairs are made. Up to 246 intelligent field devices can be connected to one controller.

The Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier controller runs two kinds of logic. Static logic handles the built-in annunciation circuits, faceplate indication and the alarm, trouble and supervisory relays as required by NFPA 72. User-programmable logic, written in Det-Tronics Safety System Software (S3), lets engineers implement cross-zone monitoring, voting, counting zones, time delays, abort sequences and other cause-and-effect functions needed for a fire suppression or gas release response. Configuration, logic and device parameters for the whole system are held in the Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier controller and downloaded from a single S3 project file.

Engineering Design of the Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier

The Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier controller is available for DIN rail or panel mounting and is powered from 24 Vdc nominal, with an operating range of 18 to 30 Vdc and a typical draw of 9 W. A four-line, 20-character alphanumeric display and LED status indicators on the front panel show alarm and fault conditions with the associated device tag, and membrane keys allow operators to acknowledge, silence and reset. The unit provides eight unsupervised relay outputs rated 1 A at 30 Vdc with a response time below 0.1 second, a dedicated trouble relay, and eight unsupervised digital inputs. The controller is certified for Class I Division 2 and Zone 2 locations (Ex nC IIC T4 Gc under ATEX and IECEx), so it can be installed in field cabinets as well as safe-area equipment rooms.

Two Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier controllers can be configured as a redundant pair working in master and hot standby mode. The standby unit receives the same inputs and updates as the master but does not control outputs until a switchover, at which point a bumpless transfer occurs. Redundancy adds automatic configuration of the standby, forced and automatic switchover, automatic synchronisation and no downtime when a controller is replaced. For plant integration the Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier controller offers an RS-232 configuration port and an RS-485 Modbus RTU port as standard, plus an optional Ethernet board with two 10/100 Ethernet ports for Modbus TCP/IP, an optional serial board with up to three extra serial ports, or a dual media ControlNet interface.

About brand
Flame and gas detection for hazardous industrial sites is what Det-Tronics has built since 1973 in Minneapolis, USA. Its program covers optical flame detectors, point and line-of-sight gas detectors, and the Eagle Quantum Premier fire and gas safety system. Seven Star LLC lists Det-Tronics flame detectors, gas detectors and EQP system components and supplies them to operators and contractors in Oman.

Det-Tronics product families listed here

Each Det-Tronics detector family uses a different sensing principle, and the model number tells you which:
  • X3301: multispectrum infrared flame detector
  • X5200: combined UV and IR flame detector
  • X2200: UV flame detector
  • PointWatch Eclipse PIRECL: infrared point detector for combustible gas
  • CGS: catalytic combustible gas sensor
  • Eagle Quantum Premier (EQP): safety system controller
The manufacturer also offers line-of-sight gas detection, toxic gas and oxygen detectors, explosion-proof smoke and heat detection and EQP field modules, which we can quote against a part number.

Where Det-Tronics equipment is used

These detectors are designed for hazardous locations in harsh industrial settings. The manufacturer describes its fire and gas systems and its flame and gas detectors as SIL 2 capable and certified by third-party approval bodies. Typical sites in the GCC are oil and gas production facilities, gas plants, tank farms and turbine enclosures, where a detector has to be matched to the fuel and to the layout of the protected area.

Ordering Det-Tronics detectors: what we need

Det-Tronics detectors are ordered by a matrix part number that fixes the housing material, thread size, output type and approval. Send the complete part number from the detector label, not only X3301 or PIRECL. If you are replacing a unit in an existing system, tell us whether it is wired by relay, 4-20 mA or on the EQP network, because the output board differs. Add the serial number and a nameplate photo, and list the accessories you need, such as swivel mounts, air shields or a calibration kit for gas detectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier controller do?
The Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier controller is the core of the EQP fire and gas system. It supervises flame and gas detectors and I/O modules on a digital loop, annunciates alarms, and initiates notification, extinguishing agent release and deluge operation using static and programmable logic.
How many devices can one EQP controller handle?
One controller supports up to 246 intelligent field devices on its LON/SLC loop. The loop is fault tolerant, so a single open or short circuit is isolated while communication continues around the other side of the loop.
Can the EQP controller be made redundant?
Yes. Two controllers can run as a master and hot standby pair with automatic configuration of the standby, automatic synchronisation and bumpless transfer on switchover, so a controller can be replaced without system downtime.
How does the EQP system connect to a DCS or PLC?
Standard ports include RS-232 for configuration and RS-485 Modbus RTU. Optional boards add Ethernet with Modbus TCP/IP, extra serial ports or a ControlNet interface, allowing alarm and status data to be shared with DCS, PLC and SCADA systems.
Does Seven Star LLC supply EQP hardware in Oman?
Seven Star LLC supplies the Det-Tronics Eagle Quantum Premier controller, I/O modules and compatible detectors as a trusted supplier, with engineering support in Muscat for projects throughout Oman and the GCC.
