Endress+Hauser Prowirl O 200 High-Pressure Vortex Flowmeter
Description
Prowirl O 200 high-pressure vortex flowmeter for steam and gas
The Endress+Hauser Prowirl O 200 is a flanged vortex flowmeter designed for the demands of high-pressure mating pipes. Where the lighter wafer Prowirl D 200 stops at PN 40 and Class 300, the Prowirl O 200 covers nominal diameters DN 15 to DN 300 (1/2 to 12 in) with EN pressure ratings of PN 160 and PN 250 and ASME ratings up to Class 1500, plus butt-weld connections. Its headline application is mass flow of saturated steam at high pressure, with an integral temperature measurement and an optional integral pressure cell. Seven Star LLC supplies Endress+Hauser instruments in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, and this page explains the Prowirl O 200 so that an enquiry specifies it fully.
The name covers a family of order codes rather than one model number. The sensor version, pressure cell range, process connection standard, seals, housing and output together define the configuration, and this page explains how to read those choices.

What makes the Prowirl O 200 suited to high pressure
The Prowirl O 200 keeps the vortex principle of the Prowirl family: a bluff body sheds vortices, and the DSC capacitance sensor detects their frequency, which is proportional to volume flow. What differs is the body and the sensor design. The meter tube and flanges are a pressure-rated casting, the DSC sensor is Alloy 718 for mechanical integrity, and the overpressure resistance of the sensor shaft is specified for the case of a diaphragm rupture. The manufacturer states that accuracy is maintained down to a Reynolds number of 10,000, because the meter body is among the most linear in the family.
The mass versions also give you integral measurement. With a Pt 1000 temperature sensor in the paddle, the meter calculates saturated-steam mass flow and energy flow. With the pressure cell versions (DC for steam, DD for gas and liquid) it measures pressure as well, so mass flow of superheated steam and gases is compensated in the device instead of by a separate flow computer. These pressure versions are available only with HART, PROFINET over Ethernet-APL or Modbus TCP over Ethernet-APL, and the pressure cell cannot be supplied oil-free or grease-free cleaned.
Sensor versions and pressure cells for the Prowirl O 200
| Version | Description | Result |
|---|---|---|
| BD | Volume, high-temperature; Alloy 718 DSC sensor, 316L tube | Volume flow; mass flow only at fixed density |
| CD | Mass with integrated temperature | Saturated-steam mass flow, energy flow, heat-flow difference, degrees of superheat |
| DC | Mass steam, integrated pressure and temperature | Steam mass flow with pressure compensation; steam to +400 °C with siphon |
| DD | Mass gas/liquid, integrated pressure and temperature | Gas or liquid mass flow; fluid temperature –40 to +100 °C |
Pressure cells are offered as 40, 100 or 160 bar abs. The permitted pressure of the complete device can be lower than the flange rating when a pressure cell is installed, so state the maximum process pressure in the enquiry.
Where Prowirl O 200 fits among Prowirl models
For pipes up to DN 150 at PN 40 or Class 300 the wafer Prowirl D 200 is the simpler choice. Prowirl F 200 is the standard flanged meter, and Prowirl R 200 narrows the line for low flow. The Prowirl O 200 is the specialist for high-pressure steam headers, boiler outlets and high-pressure gas lines, and it is the one to choose whenever the flange rating exceeds the usual PN 40 or Class 300. The heavier flanges mean it is not the economical choice for low-pressure lines.
Selecting and ordering the Prowirl O 200
- Fluid, minimum and maximum flow, and operating, design and test pressure and temperature.
- Nominal diameter and connection: EN PN 160 or PN 250 flange, ASME Class 600, 900 or 1500 flange, or butt-weld ends with the matching Schedule.
- Sensor version: volume (BD), mass with temperature (CD) or mass with pressure and temperature (DC or DD).
- Pressure cell range: 40, 100 or 160 bar abs.; choose by the highest steady process pressure.
- Seal: graphite for the highest temperatures, Gylon, Viton or Kalrez within their limits.
- Output and bus, housing material and cable length for remote versions.
- Hazardous area, SIL and NACE requirements, and any test certificates.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the Prowirl O 200
Because of the heavier flanges, support the pipework and keep the weight of the meter in mind when lifting. Mating pipe schedule matters: if the bore of the mating pipe differs from the meter, the device allows a diameter-mismatch correction within limits, so the schedule should be declared with the order. Straight runs are the same as for the family: for example 15 x DN after a reduction, 20 x DN after a single elbow, 25 x DN after a double elbow and 40 x DN after a three-dimensional double elbow, with 5 x DN downstream. Where a pressure cell is fitted on a steam line, a siphon is what allows steam up to +400 °C, because the cell itself is limited to –40 to +100 °C.
For commissioning, use the guided wizards on the touch display or FieldCare. Heartbeat Verification gives documented verification in service, and the integrated memory lets a replacement electronics module take over the saved configuration. Check gaskets and bolt torque at the first thermal cycle and re-torque as required by the site procedure.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
High-pressure steam is common in Gulf power stations, cogeneration units, refineries and petrochemical complexes, and the Prowirl O 200 fits steam export lines, main steam headers, fuel-gas systems and high-pressure gas headers. Compliance with NACE MR0175 and MR0103 helps in sour service, as it does in oil and gas sites. At ambient temperatures typical of Oman, check the ambient limit of the chosen housing and approval class, and keep the transmitter shaded or use a remote version where the pipe is very hot.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used
In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.
Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need
The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.
