Endress+Hauser Prowirl D 200 Wafer Vortex Flowmeter
Description
Prowirl D 200 wafer vortex flowmeter for steam, gas and liquid
The Endress+Hauser Prowirl D 200 is a flangeless, wafer-style vortex flowmeter for steam, gases and liquids in pipes from DN 15 to DN 150 (1/2 to 6 in). The meter body is a stainless cast tube only 65 mm (2.56 in) long, clamped between the pipe flanges, which makes it a practical one-to-one replacement for an orifice plate and a light, low-cost choice for basic duty. It is offered with the Proline 200 transmitter as a compact or remote version. Seven Star LLC supplies Endress+Hauser flow instruments in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, and this page describes the Prowirl D 200 for enquiry preparation.
The model name stands for a family of order codes. The sensor version (volume, high-temperature volume, or mass with temperature), the DSC sensor material, the seal, the pressure class, the housing and the output decide the actual device.

How the Prowirl D 200 vortex principle works
Fluid flowing past the bluff body in the meter tube sheds vortices alternately from each side. Each vortex creates a small local pressure change, which the capacitive DSC sensor detects and turns into pulses. The shedding frequency is proportional to volume flow, and the proportionality (the K-factor) is fixed by geometry and set at the factory, so it does not drift over time. For Reynolds numbers above 20,000 the K-factor is independent of density and viscosity and of whether the fluid is steam, gas or liquid. There are no moving parts, so there is nothing to maintain in operation.
The DSC sensor is burst-tested, vibration-tested and tested against thermal shock of 150 K/s, which is why this principle copes with water hammer and the temperature swings of a steam line. With the mass versions, a Pt 1000 temperature sensor in the paddle supplies saturated-steam mass flow, energy flow and heat-flow difference without a second instrument.
Sensor versions on the Prowirl D 200
| Version | Description | Temperature range |
|---|---|---|
| AA | Volume; 316L sensor and tube (Alloy C22 options AB, AC) | –40 to +260 °C |
| BA | Volume, high-temperature; 316L | –200 to +400 °C |
| CA | Mass with integrated temperature measurement; 316L | –200 to +400 °C |
Version AA reports volume flow, and mass flow only under constant process conditions with a fixed density entered. CA adds temperature and calculates corrected volume flow, mass flow, saturated-steam pressure, energy flow, heat-flow difference, specific volume and degrees of superheat. Choose it for wet or saturated steam where temperature compensation is enough.
Where Prowirl D 200 fits among Prowirl models
The Prowirl D 200 is the wafer, no-flange member of the Prowirl 200 range. Prowirl F 200 provides a flanged body, Prowirl R 200 has a built-in line-size reduction for low flow, and Prowirl O 200 is built for high-pressure mating pipes with flanged and butt-weld connections up to Class 1500. Choose the Prowirl D 200 when the pipe is DN 150 or smaller, when installation space is limited and when pressure is within PN 40 or Class 300. For higher pressure see the Prowirl O 200 page.
Selecting and ordering the Prowirl D 200
- Fluid and state: saturated or superheated steam, gas or liquid, with temperature and pressure at normal and maximum flow.
- Size: select the nominal diameter from the flow range; very low flows may need a smaller bore or a reducer.
- Sensor version: volume only, high-temperature volume, or mass with integrated temperature.
- Material: 316L standard; Alloy C22 versions for aggressive fluids; seal as per temperature (graphite to +400 °C, Viton to +175 °C, Kalrez to +275 °C, Gylon to +260 °C).
- Mating flange: EN, ASME or JIS pressure class so that the right centering rings and mounting set are supplied.
- Housing: coated aluminum GT20 or stainless GT18 (316L), compact or remote.
- Output and bus, hazardous-area approval and need for SIL.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the Prowirl D 200
Install the wafer body between pipe flanges using the supplied centering rings and the mounting set of tie rods, seals, nuts and washers, and align the flow arrow. Vortex meters need a fully developed profile, so keep straight lengths upstream and 5 x DN downstream; the technical information lists about 15 x DN after a reduction, 20 x DN after a single elbow, 25 x DN after a double elbow and 40 x DN after a three-dimensional double elbow, and the longest figure applies where several disturbances exist. For liquids in a vertical pipe use upward flow. For steam or fluids at 200 °C and above, install with the transmitter head at the side or below, and for very cold fluids, head up or at the side.
Commissioning uses the Make-it-run wizards on the display or FieldCare. Heartbeat Verification can be ordered to document the device in place. Spare parts are normally the sensor seals and the electronics modules, and settings are saved in an integrated memory.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
Steam is used widely in Gulf refineries, petrochemical units, food plants and district cooling, and the Prowirl D 200 is a natural fit for steam headers, condensate returns, compressed air and nitrogen lines, hot oil and thermal-fluid circuits, and cooling-water systems. Because the meter is flangeless and light, it suits packaged boilers, skids and utility rooms where space is tight. In hot Omani sites, check the ambient limit of the chosen housing and approval class, and shade the transmitter on outdoor lines.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used
In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.
Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need
The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.
