A mid-range gas-cooled MIG torch for general fabrication

The Trafimet ERGOPLUS 25 is a gas-cooled MIG/MAG torch rated at 230 A with CO2 and 220 A with mixed gas, both at 60% duty cycle. It takes wire from 0.8 to 1.2 mm, conforms to EN 60974-7 and connects to the feeder through a EURO central connector. This is the size most often used on 250 A class inverter and transformer sets in workshops and light structural work.

Like the rest of the ERGOPLUS line, it has a rubber-textured ergonomic handle and a detachable pistol grip, MT0566, supplied as standard in every torch package.

The technical sheet lists a 15 mm conical nozzle MC0023, M6 copper contact tips such as MD0009-10 for 1.0 mm wire and an M6 copper tip holder ME0016. Red steel liners GM0510 to GM0543 cover 1.0 to 1.2 mm wire in each cable length. Spare parts include the plastic body BW0562, trigger kit MT0563, handle kit MT0562, coaxial cables MH0817 in every length and a EURO back box kit MT0565.

Because the ERGOPLUS 25 uses M6 tips, its front-end parts differ from the larger ERGOPLUS 36, which runs M8 tips for wire up to 1.6 mm. Keep the two families apart in the stores.

Choosing length and duty

The 60% duty-cycle rating is measured to EN 60974-7; above 220 A with argon mixes the torch will run hotter and consumable life drops. For regular work near 300 A choose a larger gas-cooled torch or a water-cooled model. Use the shortest cable that reaches the job, since long assemblies add wire-feed drag, especially with soft or small-diameter wire.

Liner choice affects feeding as much as the torch itself. Red steel liners suit steel wire; soft wires such as aluminium need a plastic liner and matching contact tips, and the drive rolls on the feeder must suit the wire type. Contact tips should be replaced when the bore becomes oval, because an enlarged bore causes unstable arc length and spatter. Keep the nozzle free of spatter so the shielding gas flows evenly over the weld pool.

Before first use, blow out the liner, fit the contact tip for the wire size, and check that the EURO nut is fully tightened; a loose connection overheats the connector and causes intermittent arc.

Spare nozzles, tips and liners for this size are small items and are best ordered together with the torch so a first replacement set is on hand.
