Allen-Bradley 1734-AENTR POINT I/O Dual Port EtherNet/IP Adapter

Description

Overview

The Allen-Bradley 1734-AENTR is the POINT I/O Dual Port EtherNet/IP adapter from Rockwell Automation. It sits at the left of a 1734 POINT I/O assembly and connects the POINTBus backplane to an EtherNet/IP network through two RJ-45 ports configured as an embedded switch. The two ports support daisy-chain (linear) and ring topologies as well as the conventional star and tree layouts, so remote I/O cabinets can be chained without an external switch at every node.

POINT I/O is a common choice for remote I/O on Logix-controlled packages, wellhead and pipeline skids, compressor and utility systems supplied to Oman and the GCC. Seven Star LLC supplies the Allen-Bradley 1734-AENTR for new projects and as a maintenance spare, with engineering support in Muscat for system integrators and plant teams in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm and Salalah.

Operating Principle

The Allen-Bradley 1734-AENTR acts as a communication bridge: it exchanges I/O data with a Logix controller over EtherNet/IP and with up to 63 POINT I/O modules over the POINTBus backplane. Connections to the controller can be made as rack-optimised connections for digital modules, enhanced rack-optimised connections for digital, analog and specialty modules (up to five), or direct connections to individual modules (up to 31, or 20 if any safety I/O module is on the backplane). Rockwell states that RSLogix 5000 version 17 or later is required for the adapter Add-on Profile.

The Allen-Bradley 1734-AENTR also powers the backplane. It accepts 10 to 28.8 V DC and produces a 5 V DC POINTBus supply of up to 0.8 A, while passing field power through to the modules on the right. The output stays within specification when the input drops out for 10 ms at 10 V with maximum load. Where the modules need more than 0.8 A of backplane current, 1734-EP24DC or 1734-EPAC expansion power supplies extend the assembly toward the 63-module limit.

Engineering Design of the Allen-Bradley 1734-AENTR

The Allen-Bradley 1734-AENTR is an open-style unit measuring approximately 76.2 × 73.0 × 133.4 mm and weighing about 0.28 kg. It mounts on DIN rail with an orange locking screw and has a removable terminal block for the 24 V DC power wiring, rated for 0.34 to 2.1 mm² (22 to 14 AWG) copper conductors. The front carries status indicators for module, network, POINTBus, network activity, link 1 and link 2 activity and status, system power and field power, which makes commissioning and fault finding straightforward.

The IP address can be set with a three-digit pen-push thumbwheel on the front. Valid settings are 001 to 254, giving an address of 192.168.1.x; the unit ships set to 999 with DHCP enabled, so the address can alternatively come from a DHCP or BootP server or from non-volatile memory. Environmental ratings of the Allen-Bradley 1734-AENTR include operation from -20 to 55 °C, 5 g vibration from 10 to 500 Hz and 30 g operating shock. The adapter carries c-UL-us listing for Class I Division 2 hazardous locations and ATEX marking II 3 G Ex nA IIC T4 Gc when the product is marked, which suits Zone 2 installations when installed in a suitable enclosure.

Industrial Applications

The Allen-Bradley 1734-AENTR is widely used to place I/O close to the process: remote junction panels on gas compressor and metering skids, wellhead control panels, water pumping and treatment stations, tank farm instrumentation and packaging lines. Ring topology allows a single cable fault to be bypassed when the network is configured for ring operation, which is valuable for long cable runs across process plants in Oman.

For oil and gas, utilities and manufacturing customers in the Sohar and Salalah industrial zones, Seven Star LLC supplies the Allen-Bradley 1734-AENTR as a trusted supplier together with POINT I/O modules such as the Allen-Bradley 1734-IB8 8-point digital input module. We also support Rockwell drive and legacy controller systems, including the Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 755 AC drive and the Allen-Bradley 1747-ASB remote I/O adapter for SLC 500 installations.

Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used

ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Across the GCC, a large base of SLC 500 racks is still running, and Allen-Bradley spare parts for these systems are a frequent request.

Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need

Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
