Allen-Bradley 1734-AENT POINT I/O EtherNet/IP Adapter
Description
The single-port network adapter for POINT I/O
The Allen-Bradley 1734-AENT is the series C EtherNet/IP adapter for POINT I/O. It sits at the head of a node, gives the modules a connection to an EtherNet/IP network and supplies the POINTBus backplane and field power bus. It has one Ethernet port, which distinguishes it from the dual-port 1734-AENTR that supports Device Level Ring.
Use it where the network is a star or linear topology and a controller such as a ControlLogix or CompactLogix reads the I/O. The installation sheet states that it controls and communicates with POINT I/O modules from an EtherNet/IP network.

Capacity and power
A node can contain up to 63 modules with up to five rack-optimized or enhanced rack-optimized connections and 31 direct connections. The adapter supplies 1.0 A of 5V DC to the backplane, and each module has a listed POINTBus current requirement, such as 75 mA for the common digital and analog modules and up to 220 mA for the thermocouple and RTD types. Add them up, and add 1734-EP24DC or 1734-EPAC supplies when the total exceeds 1.0 A.
The field power input accepts 10 to 28.8V DC and can supply up to 9 A to the field bus. Maximum power consumption is 10.4 W and dissipation is 5.2 W at 28.8V DC.
Setting the IP address and commissioning
The adapter ships with its thumbwheel switches at 999 and DHCP enabled. The address can be set with the switches, by a DHCP server such as a BootP/DHCP tool, or recovered from nonvolatile memory. If the switches are set to an invalid number, the adapter checks whether DHCP is enabled; when it is, it asks the server, otherwise it uses the stored address.
The chassis size must be configured before any I/O connections are made; the factory default is a one-module chassis. LED indicators show module, network and POINTBus status, network activity and the two power statuses. A steady red network indicator means a duplicate IP address was detected.
Documents and quotation
The sheet 1734-IN042 covers the adapter. For a quotation send the 1734-AENT reference, series, quantity, the controller and the module list of the node. Related hardware is listed in Industrial Communications and 1734-AENTR dual-port adapter.
How the 1734-AENT Works
The 1734-AENT acts as the gateway between an EtherNet/IP network and the POINT I/O modules mounted to its right. On the network side, a controller such as a ControlLogix or CompactLogix opens connections to the adapter and exchanges I/O data at the requested packet interval (RPI). On the backplane side, the adapter scans the modules over POINTBus, collects input data and distributes output data. A rack-optimized connection bundles the digital data of many modules into a single connection, which saves controller connections, while direct connections give each module its own connection and are normally used for analog and specialty modules.
The adapter also powers the node. It converts its 24V DC input into the 5V DC POINTBus supply for module electronics, and passes the 24V DC field power along the terminal bases to the I/O modules until a field potential distributor or expansion power supply starts a new power group.
Selection & Ordering Guide for the 1734-AENT
- 1734-AENT – single-port EtherNet/IP adapter for star or linear networks.
- 1734-AENTK – conformal-coated version.
- 1734-AENTR – dual-port adapter with an embedded switch for Device Level Ring or linear topologies.
- 1734-EP24DC – expansion power supply when the POINTBus current of the node exceeds the adapter’s 1.0 A.
When you request a quote, list the modules in the node so their POINTBus current can be added up, and mention the controller and its software version so that compatibility and the series letter can be checked. Our team can help confirm the correct ordering code.
Installation & Maintenance of the 1734-AENT
- Mount the adapter at the left of the node on DIN rail, then add the terminal bases and modules to its right.
- Set the IP address with the thumbwheels, by DHCP or from stored memory, and record it on the panel drawing.
- Configure the chassis size in the controller project to match the actual number of modules before making I/O connections.
- Use industrial shielded Ethernet cable and a managed switch, and keep network cables away from drive output and power wiring.
- Back up the controller project, which holds the node configuration, so a replacement adapter can be set up quickly.
- Check firmware revision against the controller requirements before replacing an adapter in an existing system.
Typical Applications in Oman & the GCC
The 1734-AENT is used to build distributed I/O nodes close to the process: remote panels on water pumping stations, skids and packages in oil and gas facilities, conveyor and packaging lines, and building management systems in large commercial projects. Placing the I/O near the field devices cuts long multicore cable runs back to the control room and replaces them with a single Ethernet cable.

About brand
Catalog numbers beginning 1756, 1734, 1746 or 5069 are read at a glance by anyone who maintains Allen-Bradley control panels. The brand, the control hardware name of Rockwell Automation, dates back to 1903 in Milwaukee, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Allen-Bradley PLC and I/O modules, communication adapters and PowerFlex drives for plants in Oman, matching catalog number, series letter and firmware against the manufacturer's documentation.
Allen-Bradley product families listed here
Current controller platforms on this page are ControlLogix, with the 1756-L85E ControlLogix 5580 controller and the 1756-PA72 chassis power supply, and CompactLogix 5380, with the 5069-L320ER and 5069-L340ERM. Distributed I/O is represented by POINT I/O: the 1734-AENTR dual-port EtherNet/IP adapter and the 1734-IB8 digital input module. Allen-Bradley drives listed include the PowerFlex 525 and PowerFlex 755. For installed systems there are SLC 500 parts: the 1746-A10 chassis, 1746-NI16I analog input module, 1747-ASB remote I/O adapter, 1747-KE interface and 1747-M13 memory module.
Where Allen-Bradley hardware is used
ControlLogix and CompactLogix controllers run packaged equipment and plant utilities: compressor and pump skids, water and wastewater plants, power distribution, material handling and packaging lines. PowerFlex drives control pumps, fans and conveyors. Many SLC 500 racks are still in service.
Ordering Allen-Bradley modules and drives: what we need
Send the full catalog number, the series letter and, for controllers and communication modules, the firmware revision printed on the side label. Compatibility with an existing project depends on these. For PowerFlex drives, give the complete catalog string, which encodes voltage, current rating, enclosure and options, plus the motor nameplate data. For SLC 500 parts, tell us the rack size and processor so that we can check slot and power supply loading in the manufacturer's manuals. A label photo avoids most mistakes.
