The Catalyst 9500 and the C9500-40X-E

Catalyst 9500 switches run Cisco IOS XE and support StackWise Virtual, which lets two switches operate as one logical core. The -E at the end of the product ID means the switch is ordered with the Network Essentials license; -A means Network Advantage. Cisco has announced end of sale for the C9500-40X, so new projects should check the current replacement model.

Ordering Cisco switches: what we need

Send the complete product ID including the license suffix, the number and type of power supplies (AC or DC), any uplink network module, the software subscription term and the SFP+ optics or cables required. For an existing network, add the IOS XE release in use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the -E in C9500-40X-E mean?
It is the license level bundled with the hardware. Cisco labels -E as Network Essentials, which covers Layer 2 and basic Layer 3 switching, automation and security features. The -A version carries Network Advantage, which adds advanced routing, segmentation and larger scale. The hardware is the same, so check which feature set your design needs.
Is the Catalyst C9500-40X still a current model?
Cisco's Catalyst 9500 data sheet records that the 12Q, 24Q and 40X models were removed because they are end of sale. Units may still be required as spares or to match an existing pair. For new designs we check Cisco's documentation and propose the manufacturer's current 10G model in the same series.
Are SFP+ modules and power supplies included with the switch?
Not by default. The product ID covers the chassis and its license. Power supplies, a second supply for redundancy, uplink modules, optics and stacking or direct-attach cables are separate line items. List them in the inquiry, or send the bill of materials from your network design, so the quotation covers a working set.
Is Seven Star LLC a distributor of Cisco?
No. Seven Star LLC is an independent industrial supplier based in Muscat. We source Cisco network equipment through commercial channels, check the model or order code against the manufacturer's documentation before ordering, and provide the manufacturer's datasheet and the certificates the manufacturer issues with the order, on request.
