Det-Tronics X2200 UV Flame Detector

Description

Overview

The Det-Tronics X2200 is a single-spectrum ultraviolet (UV) flame detector designed for hazards where speed of response matters more than anything else and where the fuel may not produce a strong infrared signature. Hydrogen, silane and many inorganic or energetic materials burn with weak IR emission but radiate clearly in the ultraviolet, which is why Det-Tronics recommends the Det-Tronics X2200 for hydrogen storage, silane storage, munitions handling and HVDC converter stations. The detector is FM 3260 approved, EN54-10 certified and available in SIL 2 capable versions to IEC 61508, with explosion-proof ratings for both Division and Zone classified locations.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Det-Tronics X2200 to industrial users in Oman and the wider GCC as a trusted supplier, with engineering support in Muscat. As the region builds hydrogen production, ammonia and grid interconnection projects, our team helps engineers decide where a UV detector is the right tool and where a multispectrum IR or UVIR unit will perform better.

Operating Principle

Every flame produces ultraviolet radiation from excited molecules and radicals in the reaction zone. Sunlight at ground level contains almost no energy below about 280 nanometres because the ozone layer absorbs it, so a sensor that responds only in the 185 to 245 nanometre band is effectively solar blind. The Det-Tronics X2200 uses a gas-filled UV tube that converts incoming photons in this band into countable pulses; the processing electronics evaluate pulse rate and duration against the selected sensitivity to decide whether a fire is present. Because UV radiation travels from the flame to the detector at the speed of light and needs no flicker analysis period, response can be extremely quick.

The trade-off with any UV device is susceptibility to non-fire UV sources such as electric arc welding, lightning and x-ray inspection. The Det-Tronics X2200 addresses this with advanced signal processing and an arc rejection mode, and it continues to respond correctly in the presence of modulated blackbody radiation from heaters, ovens and turbines. The specification sheet shows a one square foot n-heptane fire detected at 85 feet (25.9 m) in about 3 seconds and a 32 inch methane plume at 100 feet (30.5 m) in about 2 seconds in very high sensitivity, low arc mode, and models are available that meet the NFPA 33 requirement for response in under 0.5 seconds.

Engineering Design of the Det-Tronics X2200

The Det-Tronics X2200 shares the robust X-Series housing used across the Det-Tronics flame detector range: copper-free painted aluminium or cast 316 stainless steel, IP66/IP67 and NEMA 4X sealing, 3/4 inch NPT or M25 conduit entries and an integral wiring compartment. Flameproof Ex db IIC and increased safety Ex db eb IIC models are certified under ATEX and IECEx with T6 to T5 temperature classes, while FM and CSA approvals cover Class I Division 1 Groups B, C and D. Microprocessor-heated optics help the window stay free of moisture and ice.

Three Det-Tronics X2200 sensing versions are offered. The standard X2200 includes a small Krypton-85 source inside the UV tube for automatic Optical Integrity verification, the X2200G omits the radioactive source, and the X2200M uses a molybdenum element with an extended 185 to 265 nanometre range that is better suited to sulfur fires, some black powders and other unusual chemistries. Automatic, magnetic and manual oi testing, a replaceable oi plate and a tri-colour status LED make routine proof testing straightforward from ground level.

Key Features

The main design points of the Det-Tronics X2200 are summarised below:

  • Solar-blind UV sensing in the 185 to 245 nanometre band gives fast response to hydrocarbon, hydrogen and silane flames.
  • Arc rejection and advanced signal processing reduce alarms caused by electric arcs and other transient UV sources.
  • Optional NFPA 33 compliant models respond in under 0.5 seconds for high speed protection.
  • With an Eagle Quantum Premier system and high speed deluge module, a correctly configured installation can meet NFPA 15 ultra-high-speed requirements.
  • Fire, fault and auxiliary relays are fitted as standard, with contacts rated 5 A at 30 Vdc.
  • An optional 0–20 mA output with HART and an RS-485 Modbus link support integration with PLC and DCS systems.
  • Pulse output models make it simple to replace older Det-Tronics UV detectors on existing controller based systems.
  • Low power consumption of 2.5 W at 24 Vdc nominal eases power supply and cable sizing on large detector loops.

Industrial Applications

The specification sheet names hydrogen storage, munitions, silane storage and HVDC converter stations as typical applications. In Oman these hazards appear in green hydrogen and ammonia pilot plants planned around Duqm and Salalah, hydrogen-cooled generator areas and electrolyser rooms in power stations, semiconductor and solar module facilities that handle silane, explosives magazines serving the mining and quarrying sector, and converter halls on high voltage grid interconnections. Indoor process rooms with little background UV are also a good fit for the Det-Tronics X2200, because its fast response limits fire growth before suppression is released.

Where welding, lightning or strong reflections are a concern, engineers often specify the Det-Tronics X2200 inside enclosures and use UVIR or multispectrum IR detectors on outdoor plant. Seven Star LLC supplies the Det-Tronics X2200 and the wider X-Series range from Muscat, including mounting arms, air shields and oi plates, and our engineers can support detector layout reviews for projects across Oman and the GCC.

About brand
Flame and gas detection for hazardous industrial sites is what Det-Tronics has built since 1973 in Minneapolis, USA. Its program covers optical flame detectors, point and line-of-sight gas detectors, and the Eagle Quantum Premier fire and gas safety system. Seven Star LLC lists Det-Tronics flame detectors, gas detectors and EQP system components and supplies them to operators and contractors in Oman.

Det-Tronics product families listed here

Each Det-Tronics detector family uses a different sensing principle, and the model number tells you which:
  • X3301: multispectrum infrared flame detector
  • X5200: combined UV and IR flame detector
  • X2200: UV flame detector
  • PointWatch Eclipse PIRECL: infrared point detector for combustible gas
  • CGS: catalytic combustible gas sensor
  • Eagle Quantum Premier (EQP): safety system controller
The manufacturer also offers line-of-sight gas detection, toxic gas and oxygen detectors, explosion-proof smoke and heat detection and EQP field modules, which we can quote against a part number.

Where Det-Tronics equipment is used

These detectors are designed for hazardous locations in harsh industrial settings. The manufacturer describes its fire and gas systems and its flame and gas detectors as SIL 2 capable and certified by third-party approval bodies. Typical sites in the GCC are oil and gas production facilities, gas plants, tank farms and turbine enclosures, where a detector has to be matched to the fuel and to the layout of the protected area.

Ordering Det-Tronics detectors: what we need

Det-Tronics detectors are ordered by a matrix part number that fixes the housing material, thread size, output type and approval. Send the complete part number from the detector label, not only X3301 or PIRECL. If you are replacing a unit in an existing system, tell us whether it is wired by relay, 4-20 mA or on the EQP network, because the output board differs. Add the serial number and a nameplate photo, and list the accessories you need, such as swivel mounts, air shields or a calibration kit for gas detectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should a Det-Tronics X2200 UV detector be chosen instead of an IR detector?
The Det-Tronics X2200 is preferred for fuels with weak infrared emission such as hydrogen and silane, and for hazards that need very fast response such as munitions handling. IR or UVIR detectors are usually better outdoors where welding, lightning or reflections could affect a UV-only device.
How fast does the X2200 respond?
The specification sheet lists about 3 seconds for a one square foot n-heptane fire at 85 feet and about 2 seconds for a methane plume at 100 feet in very high sensitivity. Models meeting the NFPA 33 requirement for response under 0.5 seconds are also available.
What is the X2200M version used for?
The X2200M uses a molybdenum UV sensing element with an extended 185 to 265 nm range, which is better suited to sulfur fires, some black powders and other substances with unusual combustion chemistry.
Can the X2200 connect to existing fire and gas systems?
Yes. It offers fire, fault and auxiliary relays, an optional 0 to 20 mA output with HART, RS-485 Modbus, pulse output models for legacy Det-Tronics controllers and dedicated Eagle Quantum Premier network models.
