Masoneilan 535H Single-Seat Pressure Reducing Regulator
Overview
The Masoneilan 535H is the single-seat pressure reducing regulator of the 535H/536H range from Baker Hughes. In the model code the first digit 5 is the regulator type, the second digit 3 is a single-seat body, the third digit 5 is reducing service and the letter H identifies the 21000 body. The instruction manual describes the Masoneilan 535H as downstream pressure controlled, so it is chosen to deliver a steady reduced pressure of air, liquid, saturated steam or superheated steam to equipment that sits behind it. It is the compact choice for small-to-moderate flows, with nominal Cv from 1.4 to 27 in sizes of 3/4, 1, 1-1/2 and 2 inch.

Operation and Installation of the Masoneilan 535H
The Masoneilan 535H is a self-operated regulator with a 10900 Series spring-diaphragm actuator. The manual instructs that the controlled pressure is piped from a point 6 to 10 feet from the regulator, or from the discharge line 6 to 10 feet from the pump, to the 1/2 inch NPT connection in the diaphragm case, with a gauge and a needle valve in the control line. The needle valve isolates the line and acts as an adjustable choke against cycling from pump pulsation. The regulator is installed in a horizontal run in the direction of the flow arrow, on steam service with the diaphragm actuator down so that a water seal protects the diaphragm, and with a three-valve bypass to permit removal without shutting down the system.
The set pressure is made at the factory when specified, otherwise at the minimum of the serial plate range. During commissioning the outlet stop valve is opened, the inlet stop valve is opened part way, the control line valve is opened and the setting is read on the gauge. Turning the adjusting screw clockwise compresses the spring to raise the setting. The technical specification adds that for temperatures above the diaphragm rating the actuator must be mounted below the body centerline with a condensate barrier in the sensing line and the diaphragm case.
Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 535H
The Masoneilan 535H is a high-capacity globe body with a single, heavy top-guided disc plug, quick-opening characteristic and flow to open. The manual calls this top guiding the support that gives the plug maximum stability. The seat ring is either threaded or of the quick-change type, and a series of reduced-area trims gives a wide flow range in every size. On the 535H the orifice diameters are 0.250, 0.375, 0.500, 0.810, 1.250 and 1.625 inch for nominal Cv of 1.4, 2.4, 4.4, 6.5, 19.5 and 27 respectively, with a 0.375 inch travel and a 1/2 inch stem.
The trim determines the seat leakage. The standard 316 stainless steel plug and seat ring and the hardfaced version have Class IV shut-off, and a soft seat with a PTFE insert gives Class VI, available only on the 535H and only for seat-ring diameters above 20.62 mm, with temperature limits of -50°F (-46°C) to 446°F (230°C). The lapping instructions give a plug seating angle of 28 degrees against 30 degrees for the seat ring, so the lapped contact is a narrow line. In the quick-change option a 304 stainless steel cage and a spiral-wound seat ring gasket are added, and the bonnet holds the cage, seat ring and gasket in place so that the trim can be withdrawn after the bonnet is lifted.

Industrial Applications
The Masoneilan 535H is typically installed on steam supplies to heat exchangers, jacketed vessels, sterilizers and tracing headers, on compressed air and gas lines to instruments and process units, and on liquid lines where a small constant pressure must be held. In Oman the small flows and tidy construction suit hospital and hotel plant rooms in Muscat, food and beverage and pharmaceutical lines, utility skids at Sohar and Duqm, and package boiler rooms where an operator wants a simple regulator with a quick-change trim for fast shop maintenance.

As an example from the saturated steam capacity table, the Masoneilan 535H with Cv 6.5 passes 638 lb/hr at 50 psig inlet and 30 psig outlet, and the Cv 27 trim passes 2652 lb/hr under the same conditions. With a 3-1/2 inch actuator in the 150-450, 150-300 or 400-750 psi ranges the Cv is limited to 60 percent of nominal, giving 11.7 instead of 19.5 and 16.2 instead of 27.
