Overview

The Masoneilan 21009 is a single-ported, cage-guided globe control valve from the Baker Hughes Masoneilan range, documented by an instruction manual dated 05/2021. The manual describes it as a design with built-in versatility for a wide variety of process applications: a standard contoured plug (identified as the 21109 plug series), a quick-change seat ring, heavy cage guiding for plug stability and a series of reduced-area trims that give a wide flow range in every valve size. Class IV shutoff leakage is standard, with optional construction to the IEC 534-4 and ANSI/FCI 70.2 Class V requirements.

How the Masoneilan 21009 Controls Flow

In the Masoneilan 21009 the process fluid enters the body and passes through a cage that surrounds the plug. The plug slides inside the cage, which guides it along its full stroke and supports it against flow forces, and it closes onto a seat ring at the lower end of the cage. Moving the plug off the seat opens the flow path through the cage windows or reduced-area openings, so the flow area is set by the plug position and the characteristic is determined by the trim.

The flow direction matters. The manual states that the valve must be installed so the fluid flows in the direction of the arrow on the body, and that with the contoured plug the flow direction is flow-to-open. Reversing the valve in the line would therefore change how it behaves, so the arrow must be checked at installation whenever a Masoneilan 21009 is replaced or piped in a new location.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 21009

The parts list of the Masoneilan 21009 identifies the body, bonnet, plug and stem, plug pin, cage, seat ring, packing, packing follower and flange, optional lantern ring, body gasket and seat ring gasket. Spiral wound gaskets are standard for the body and seat ring, and the manual stresses that new gaskets must be fitted every time the valve is disassembled. The seating surface angle of the plug is 28 degrees and that of the seat ring is 30 degrees, so lapping produces a narrow line contact. The recommended spare parts include the plug stem, packing, body gasket, cage, seat ring, seat ring gasket, plug and plug pin.

Standard packing for the Masoneilan 21009 is braided PTFE with a carbon or aramid core, cut so that it can be replaced without disconnecting the stem from the actuator. An optional flexible graphite arrangement and a lubricator or leak detection connection on the bonnet are available. The manual advises leaving the bonnet uninsulated if the valve is heat-insulated. The pneumatic actuators are designed to accept a 1/4 inch NPT air connection, and the manual refers to the Masoneilan 87/88 multi-spring actuator for removal, maintenance and adjustment.
