Masoneilan 8013 Series Electro-Pneumatic Cam Valve Positioner (8012/8013)

Description

Overview

The Masoneilan 8013 is the European-design member of the Baker Hughes 8012/8013 Series of electro-pneumatic cam valve positioners. It takes a DC current signal from an electronic controller, compares it with the true position of the valve plug and adjusts the air pressure sent to the actuator until the two agree. Baker Hughes describes the series as a force-balance device with excellent dynamic response and positioning accuracy, and the same family includes the 8012, the US design supplied with FM approvals, while the Masoneilan 8013 carries ATEX, CCOE and IA approvals for hazardous areas.

Seven Star LLC is the trusted supplier for Masoneilan in the Sultanate of Oman and supplies the Masoneilan 8013 and 8012 positioners, together with the actuators and valves they are mounted on, to plants across the GCC. Because the numbering system encodes the actuator, cam and approval, our Muscat team can identify the correct model code from an existing nameplate and confirm a replacement before an order is placed.

Operating Principle of the Masoneilan 8013

The Masoneilan 8013 works by balancing forces on a beam. A change in the controller signal passes through a coil and magnet system, and the coil produces a force on the beam that moves a flapper toward or away from a nozzle. The resulting change in nozzle back pressure drives a high-capacity pilot, which raises or lowers the output pressure to the actuator. In direct action an increase in the electrical signal increases output pressure, and in reverse action it decreases it.

The valve position is fed back mechanically. Plug motion is carried through the positioner lever to a force-balance spring, and the spring acts on the beam against the coil force. When the two forces are equal the system is in equilibrium and the output pressure settles at the level needed to hold the plug in place, with a small deliberate bleed between supply and output that keeps the pilot responsive. In theory no air flows into or out of the pilot at that point, which is why steady-state consumption stays low.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 8013

The cast aluminum case of the Masoneilan 8013 is fixed to a mounting plate and a molded support. Inside, beryllium copper flexure bearings carry the beam without friction at its fulcrum points, the pilot has a metering tube fitted with a clean-out plunger, and the coil is impregnated with an insulating material. A flame arrestor protects the nozzle circuit, and the 8013 numbering includes explosion-proof and intrinsically safe versions, for which Baker Hughes refers installers to its 8000 ATEX manual.

The cam is the characteristic feature. Only one multi-lobe cam is fitted, and the chosen lobe gives linear, linear split-range or equal-percentage control. The cam is mounted directly on the end of the plug shaft of a rotary valve or on the stem of a reciprocating actuator, so the usual linkage and its backlash are essentially eliminated. Zero is set with a vernier screw, and span is set by adjusting the tension of the force-balance spring.

Key Features

The following points explain why the Masoneilan 8013 remains specified for pneumatic actuators that are driven by an electrical signal:

  • The Masoneilan 8013 uses one multi-lobe cam, which provides field-changeable linear or percentage characteristics without additional parts.
  • The 8013 can be supplied for direct action or reverse action, so a rising signal can open or close the valve.
  • Two control valves can be operated in sequence from one controller output by split-ranging the signal.
  • Beryllium copper flexure bearings remove friction from the beam fulcrum and support good positioning accuracy.
  • A high-capacity pilot gives fast stroking speeds, and its metering tube has a clean-out plunger for maintenance.
  • The input circuit can be adapted to most DC current signals, including 4-20 mA, 1-5 mA and 10-50 mA.
  • Low temperature instruments are available for service down to -55 degC, against -20 degC for the standard instrument.
  • Mounting codes cover 37/38 and 87/88 actuators, Camflex II, Sigma F, Minitork II, 36000 ball valves, HPBV, Varipak and V-Max.

Industrial Applications

The Masoneilan 8013 suits pneumatic actuators in refineries, gas processing, power and water plants where the controller output is a current signal and a robust mechanical positioner is preferred to a software-configured one. Typical installations are Camflex II rotary-plug valves, Minitork II butterfly valves and multi-spring diaphragm actuators on globe valves, including established plants around Sohar, Salalah and Duqm, where a replacement positioner has to match the original mounting and cam.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 8013 with the valves and actuators it is fitted to, such as the Masoneilan Type 87/88 spring-diaphragm actuators and the Masoneilan Camflex rotary control valve. Sites that are ready to move to digital diagnostics can compare it with the Masoneilan SVI3 digital valve positioner, and our engineers will recommend whichever positioner fits the loop.

About brand
Masoneilan has built control valves since 1882, and its Camflex eccentric plug rotary valve and 21000 series globe valve are fixtures in refineries, gas plants and power stations. Every valve carries a serial number and a long model number that defines the actuator, body and trim. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Masoneilan control valves, actuators, regulators, positioners and level instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. We source complete valves as well as Masoneilan spare parts against that nameplate data.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series

The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.

Where Masoneilan valves are used

Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.

Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need

For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Masoneilan 8012 and 8013?
The 8012 is the US design supplied with FM approvals, while the Masoneilan 8013 is the European design with ATEX, CCOE and IA approvals. Both are force-balance electro-pneumatic cam positioners, and their input resistances differ slightly, for example 173 ohm for the 8012 and 216 ohm for the 8013 at 4-20 mA.
Can the Masoneilan 8013 be used for reverse action or split-range service?
Yes. The 8013 is available for direct action, where a rising signal raises the output pressure, or reverse action, where it lowers it. It also provides an accurate means of split-ranging the controller signal so that one controller can operate two control valves in sequence.
Which valves and actuators can the Masoneilan 8013 be mounted on?
The model code identifies the mounting: 37/38 and 87/88 actuators with or without a cam, Camflex II, Sigma F, Minitork II and 38002, 36000 control ball valves, HPBV, Varipak and V-Max. Send the existing nameplate so Seven Star LLC can confirm the exact code.
What air supply does the Masoneilan 8013 need?
Baker Hughes quotes 1.4 to 5.2 bar (20 to 75 psi), depending on valve size and actuator action. Steady-state consumption is between 0.40 and 0.85 st.m3/h across that range, and the air connections are 1/4 inch NPT.
Is Seven Star LLC a trusted supplier for Masoneilan products?
