Masoneilan 77000 Series Multi-Stage High-Pressure Control Valve
Overview
The Masoneilan 77000 Series is a high-pressure labyrinth trim control valve from Baker Hughes that provides compressible-fluid and two-phase control without the erosion, vibration and high noise associated with conventional control valves. The Masoneilan 77000 applies a multi-stage, expanding-area axial flow trim to dissipate energy gradually, and it is offered in two design concepts: the original 77000, an angle valve with up to nine trim stages, and the compact 77003, with five or three stages. Baker Hughes notes that the design is proven in many high-pressure, dirty-service applications, including wellhead choke valves. The Masoneilan 77000 is therefore specified where a conventional trim would not survive the duty.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the Masoneilan 77000 Series Multi-Stage High-Pressure Control Valve to oil and gas, refining and power projects across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Our Muscat instrumentation and valve engineers support trim-stage selection and noise calculation, and we also stock the matching 77000/77003 Series seal kit for maintenance.
Operating Principle
The Masoneilan 77000 applies energy management: the fluid is passed through a number of restrictions, or pressure-reduction stages, along a tortuous axial flow path, so that energy is dissipated by high head loss rather than by shock waves, simulating the gradual pressure loss in a long pipeline. The flow area of the trim expands at the later stages to compensate for the volumetric expansion of gas as pressure falls, which keeps the fluid velocity nearly constant through the whole throttling process and avoids damaging energy spikes inside the trim. Baker Hughes notes that because free-jet noise intensity varies with the eighth power of velocity, a 4:1 reduction in velocity can reduce expected noise by roughly 24 dB.
The same staging controls cavitation and flashing. The trim reduces pressure in small increments without letting local pressure at any stage fall below the fluid vapor pressure, and all stages are actively throttled in unison. Wide flow paths let entrained particles pass without clogging, and the axial flow path in an angle body directs two-phase fluid away from critical surfaces and the downstream pipe wall. The semi-balanced plug lets pressurized fluid fill internal plug ports at intermediate positions, which creates a balancing load that minimizes plug forces; the trim has no secondary balancing seal and only a single surface for seat contact, with a rangeability of 50:1.
Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 77000
The Masoneilan 77000 Series is a cast or forged angle valve in sizes from 1 to 8 inches (DN 25 to 200) with expanding outlets. The original 77000 is available with up to nine stages in a bottom-bonnet configuration with flanged ends, or in a top-bonnet design for flanged and welded ends; the 77003 is a top-entry design with five-stage partial-balanced (Trim X) or three-stage unbalanced (Trim Y) trim, five base and trim sizes of 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 inches, and an outlet one nominal size larger than the inlet. The technical specification rates the series at ANSI Class 600 to 2500 (ISO PN 100 to 420, API 2000 to 10000), while the Baker Hughes product page quotes ANSI 900 to 2500, so the exact rating for each size and outlet is confirmed at quotation; end connections are raised-face flanged, ring-type joint or butt weld.
Body materials are carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy steel, and trim materials are hardened stainless steel with a hard-faced metal seat and a quick-change trim. Flow is flow-to-open, up-seating as standard. The technical specification states that the standard seat design meets IEC 60534-4 and ANSI/FCI 70.2 Class V and that block-valve tight shutoff to MSS-SP-61 can be supplied, although its rating table lists Class IV as standard and Class V as optional, so the seat leakage class is confirmed at quotation. Short travel reduces packing wear, a one-piece plug and stem removes a connection weak point, and actuation is by spring-diaphragm or piston actuators with an optional lever for force amplification and, for high precision, a Masoneilan SVI II Advanced Performance positioner.
Key Features
These features explain why the Masoneilan 77000 is specified for high-pressure, high-energy duty:
- Multi-stage axial flow trim with an expanding flow area keeps fluid velocity nearly constant and limits noise and erosion.
- Staged pressure reduction avoids cavitation by keeping local pressure above the vapor pressure at each stage.
- Wide flow paths tolerate entrained debris and solids without clogging.
- A semi-balanced plug with no secondary balancing seal provides stable control with a rangeability of 50:1.
- Hardened plug and liner, continuous upper and lower plug guiding and a one-piece plug and stem limit trim wear and vibration.
- Class V seat leakage is stated in the technical specification (confirmed at quotation), with block-valve tight shutoff available to MSS-SP-61.
- Sour-service construction is available under NACE MR0103, and the design is intended to comply with the Pressure Equipment Directive.
- Top-entry bonnet design and quick-change trim ease maintenance.
Industrial Applications
Baker Hughes lists hydroprocessing hot high-pressure separator control, wellhead choke valves, steam injection for tar sands extraction and supercritical power applications as key uses of the Masoneilan 77000, in the refining, upstream oil and gas and power generation industries. In Oman, enhanced oil recovery projects with steam injection, high-pressure gas wells that need choke control and refinery hydroprocessing units are the natural fits, since each combines a very large pressure drop with gas or two-phase flow that would erode and vibrate a conventional trim.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 77000 Series to EPC contractors, operators and maintenance teams throughout Oman and the GCC, including industrial projects in the Sohar and Salalah economic zones. Alongside the valve we supply Type 51/52/53 piston actuators and can quote the Masoneilan 84000 SteamForm steam conditioning valve for steam letdown duty elsewhere in the plant.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series
The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.Where Masoneilan valves are used
Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need
For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.Browse Masoneilan products by category: Control Valves, Valve Actuator, Regulators, Valve Positioner, Level Transmitter.
