Masoneilan 535V-50 Differential Pressure Microflow Regulator

Description

Overview

The Masoneilan 535V-50 is the differential pressure regulator of the Masoneilan microflow range from Baker Hughes. It combines the single-seat microflow body of the 535V with a differential actuator, so that instead of holding one downstream pressure it maintains one pressure in excess of a reference pressure by an adjustable amount. Baker Hughes publishes one instruction manual for the 535V reducing regulator and the Masoneilan 535V-50 together, and the 535H/536H/535V technical specification lists the actuator spring ranges for the differential option separately, which is what makes the 535V-50 a distinct catalogued item.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 535V-50 to laboratories, packaged-skid builders, refineries and gas plants in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. Our instrumentation division in Muscat turns a differential duty, expressed as two pressures and a small flow, into the correct trim number, actuator size and spring range, and provides the Baker Hughes documentation for the unit you order.

Differential Operation of the Masoneilan 535V-50

In the Masoneilan 535V-50 the higher-pressure fluid is piped to the 1/2 inch NPT connection in the upper diaphragm case, which is the chamber where the pressure opposes the spring, and the lower-pressure fluid is piped to the other diaphragm chamber. The adjustable spring of the actuator is set to the required differential and holds the regulator open. When the differential rises above the set point it overcomes the spring and the regulator closes, and when the differential falls the spring opens it again, so the plug position follows the differential continuously.

A needle valve and a gauge go into each of the two sensing lines, close enough together that both valves can be reached at once. The manual explains that the needle valves shut off the control lines and act as adjustable chokes against cycling from pump pulsation, and it carries a warning that pressure must be raised on both sides of the diaphragm at the same time, otherwise the diaphragm can fail. The typical installation diagram shows low pressure and high pressure needle valves, vent valves and an equalizing valve around the regulator, and a three-valve bypass allows the regulator to be removed without shutting off the flow.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 535V-50

The Masoneilan 535V-50 uses the standard 28000 Series body with an integral bonnet in ANSI Class 150 to 600 ratings (PN 20 to 100). The plug has linear characteristic and the seat is metal, giving Class IV shutoff. Eight plugs and five seat rings give ten assemblies numbered 0 to 9, with rated Cv of 3.8, 2.3, 1.2, 0.6, 0.25, 0.1, 0.05, 0.025, 0.01 and 0.004, and the 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch bodies are available with the Cv limits shown in the technical specification. The stainless steel construction is rated from -321°F to 650°F (-196°C to 343°C) with a 316L body, a 17-4 PH seat ring retainer and a carbon-core braided PTFE packing set.

The packing box is protected by a safety pin and packing spacer that stop the plug from being pushed out of the body if the actuator is removed under pressure, and for trims with Cv 0.6 to 3.8 the manual describes a quick packing change that removes the whole actuator without disturbing calibration. Below Cv 0.6 the plug is too fine for that method, and the regulator is disassembled instead.

Key Features

The following points explain why the Masoneilan 535V-50 is chosen for small-flow differential control:

  • Differential action keeps one pressure above a reference pressure without a transmitter, controller or air supply.
  • Ten trim assemblies reach down to a rated Cv of 0.004, far below the trims of the larger 535H-50 style regulators.
  • Low pressure differential actuators in 5 and 4 inch cases cover set ranges from 3 to 125 psi.
  • High pressure differential actuators in 5, 4 and 3-1/2 inch cases withstand static pressures up to 1500 psi (103.4 bar).
  • A metal seat gives Class IV shutoff and a stainless steel body supports service down to -196°C.
  • Stellite No. 6 seat rings and solid Stellite plugs are used on the finest trims, which resist wear at small orifices.
  • The safety pin and spacer retain the plug when the actuator is removed.
  • A sealed, direct-operated design needs no power supply, which suits skid and remote installations.

Industrial Applications

The Masoneilan 535V-50 is used wherever a small stream must be held at a fixed pressure above or below a reference: purge and bubbler lines referenced to vessel pressure, seal-fluid and barrier-fluid supplies for small pumps and compressors, reactor sampling and injection lines, and test benches that simulate a differential. In Oman these needs appear in gas processing and refinery packages, in laboratory and pilot facilities supporting desalination at Muscat and Salalah, and in fabricated skids built in the Sohar industrial zones.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 535V-50 with its siblings and with the Masoneilan 172 Series pressure reducing regulator, and we can quote the differential, reducing and back pressure microflow models together so that spares and documentation are standardised. A pressure gauge and needle valve for each sensing line can be quoted with the regulator.

The foreword of the Baker Hughes specification names only 3/4 and 1 inch bodies for the 535V, but every data table (body ratings, Cv, dimensions, weights) lists 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch. Seven Star LLC follows the tables, so the Masoneilan 535V-50 is quoted in 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch (15, 20 and 25 mm) bodies; the 3.8 Cv trim is limited to the 1 inch body.

Related Masoneilan regulators include the Masoneilan 535V Series microflow regulator, Masoneilan 536V back pressure microflow regulator and Masoneilan 535H pressure reducing regulator.

About brand
Masoneilan has built control valves since 1882, and its Camflex eccentric plug rotary valve and 21000 series globe valve are fixtures in refineries, gas plants and power stations. Every valve carries a serial number and a long model number that defines the actuator, body and trim. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Masoneilan control valves, actuators, regulators, positioners and level instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. We source complete valves as well as Masoneilan spare parts against that nameplate data.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series

The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.

Where Masoneilan valves are used

Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.

Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need

For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Masoneilan 535V-50 regulate?
It regulates a differential pressure. The spring of the differential actuator is set to the required difference between two controlled pressures and holds the regulator open. When the difference rises above the set point the regulator closes, and when it falls the regulator opens.
Which actuators are available for the differential function?
Baker Hughes lists low pressure 10900 differential actuators in 5 and 4 inch cases with ranges from 3 to 125 psi and 250 psi static pressure, and high pressure actuators in 5, 4 and 3-1/2 inch cases with ranges up to 330 psi and static pressure up to 1500 psi.
What sizes and flow coefficients does the 535V-50 offer?
The body is offered in 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch (15, 20 and 25 mm) sizes, with ten plug and seat ring assemblies covering rated Cv from 3.8 to 0.004; the 3.8 trim is limited to the 1 inch body. The foreword of the specification names only 3/4 and 1 inch, but every data table includes the 1/2 inch body, so the tables are treated as governing.
Why must both sides of the diaphragm be pressurised together?
The instruction manual warns that pressure must be increased on both sides of the diaphragm at the same time, otherwise the diaphragm can fail. A needle valve and a gauge in each control line, within reach of each other, allow both lines to be opened together.
Is Seven Star LLC a trusted supplier for Masoneilan products?
