Overview
The Masoneilan SVi1000 is a loop-powered digital valve positioner from Baker Hughes that turns a standard 4-20 mA signal, with HART communication carried on the same two wires, into precise, repeatable control of single-acting pneumatic control valves. Baker Hughes positions it as the user-friendly choice for control systems that still use 4-20 mA signalling, and it combines proven magnetic position measurement, an industrial metal housing and a deliberately simple local interface. One model serves both rotary and reciprocating valves, so a plant can standardise on a single positioner for globe, butterfly and rotary-plug installations.

Operating Principle of the Masoneilan SVi1000
The Masoneilan SVi1000 is a smart electro-pneumatic positioner. It receives the 4-20 mA position setpoint from the controller and compares it with the valve position reported by a non-contact magnetic travel sensor. The difference between setpoint and feedback is analysed by the position control algorithm, which produces a servo signal for the internal current-to-pressure converter. The converter output is amplified by a pneumatic relay that drives the actuator, and once the error falls inside the allowed band no further correction is applied, so the valve holds position without hunting.
The Masoneilan positioner draws its operating power from the control loop itself, with a minimum of 3.2 mA needed to start up and a compliance voltage of 9 V at 20 mA or 11 V at 4 mA. Because the position sensor is a magnet coupled Hall-effect device, there is no shaft penetration into the housing and no wiper that can wear, which is the reason Baker Hughes describes the enclosure as sealed with fully potted electronics. If the positioner detects a persistent internal fault it moves to a failsafe mode in which the output pressure is set low, and on loss of input signal or air supply the actuator output vents to atmosphere.
Engineering Design of the Masoneilan SVi1000
The housing and cover are low-copper aluminium to ASTM A360, finished in grey polyurethane over an epoxy primer, and the enclosure is rated IP66 and NEMA 4X for outdoor and marine service. Electrical connection is a single 1/2 NPT female entry onto screw terminals, with wire sizes from 12 to 28 AWG. The unit has a tropicalised construction with fungus-resistant coating, anti-fungal protection on exposed circuits and a positively pressured housing with bug-resistant orifices, which suits the hot and humid conditions found along the Gulf coast.
Commissioning is carried out from the local interface without opening a laptop. Four buttons with matching LEDs run the Auto Find Stops, upper-stop and Autotune routines, a configuration selector chooses air-to-open or air-to-close action and selects autotuned or preset tuning sets, and a screw adjusts the open stop. The same device can be reached over HART using ValVue software, a handheld communicator or any host that supports DD, eDDL or DTM, and the Masoneilan SVi1000 supports HART revision 5 or 7, field selectable. Orderable configurations are coded /G for gauges, /SW for two solid-state switches, /PR for 4-20 mA position retransmit and /IM for an integrated magnet, and these options can be combined.

Baker Hughes lists the Masoneilan SVi1000 for power generation, refining, petrochemicals and midstream and upstream oil and gas, with typical duties on steam turbine bypass, condensers, cooling towers, gas turbines, heat recovery systems, distillation, hydroprocessing, compression, separation and pipeline operations.
