Masoneilan 78400/18400 Series LincolnLog Anti-Cavitation Control Valve
Overview
The Masoneilan 78400/18400 Series LincolnLog is Baker Hughes’ high-pressure, liquid-letdown control valve for services in which a single-stage trim would be destroyed by cavitation. The 78400 is the angle-style body and the 18400 is the globe-style body; both carry the same multi-stage, cage-guided, axial-flow anti-cavitation trim. Baker Hughes describes the design as having more than twenty years of field performance in high-pressure liquid letdown, and it is applied where cavitation is severe enough that an ordinary valve can lose performance, or fail mechanically, within hours of commissioning.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the Masoneilan 78400/18400 to upstream oil and gas, refining and power generation customers across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Our instrumentation division in Muscat helps engineers review the process data, trim staging and material requirements before an RFQ is raised, and every order is supported with genuine Baker Hughes documentation.
Multi-Stage Axial Flow Operating Principle
Cavitation occurs when the local pressure inside a valve falls below the vapour pressure of the liquid, and the resulting vapour bubbles collapse violently when pressure recovers. The Masoneilan 78400/18400 avoids this by dividing the pressure drop into a series of stages along the axis of the plug. The fluid is forced through a tortuous, three-dimensional path of high-impedance pressure-reduction areas, and each stage takes only part of the drop, so the local pressure is not allowed to fall below vapour pressure. Because the stages of the Masoneilan 78400/18400 throttle in unison, no single stage sees the full pressure drop.
Baker Hughes contrasts this axial design with radial trims such as drilled-hole cages and stacked disks. In many radial designs the pressure drop is concentrated at the innermost stage next to the plug seating surface when the valve is only partly open, and the outer stages become inactive. In the Masoneilan 78400/18400 the notched plug, staged liner and cage keep every stage active across the whole travel, which also avoids the stair-stepped control response of radial trims and allows turndown of up to 150:1 in some applications.
Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 78400/18400
The Masoneilan 78400/18400 is available with cast or forged bodies, in globe or angle configuration, in carbon steel, stainless steel and chrome-moly as standard, with optional F6NM martensitic, F51 and F55 duplex stainless steel or Inconel 718 for corrosive and sour duties. Flanged ratings run from ANSI 600 to 2500 with UNI-DIN 100 to 400 connections, and welded ends are available; the 1 to 6 inch sizes can also be supplied to API 6A at 10K or 15K for wellhead-type service. The technical specification covers sizes from 1 to 8 inch (DN 25 to 200); the Baker Hughes product page quotes up to 12 inch, so larger sizes are confirmed at quotation.
Several design details of the Masoneilan 78400/18400 address the failure modes of severe liquid service. Standard LincolnLog trim is offered in 3, 4 and 6 stages with different staging ratios, and Masoneilan can engineer additional stages, up to ten, for pressure drops above 8,000 psi (550 bar). An oversized stem is joined to the plug through a male-female coupling, and continuous plug guiding extends through each stage, which resists the vibration that damages plug and stem. On the Masoneilan 78400/18400, hardened materials such as 440C stainless steel and solid tungsten carbide are available against erosion. A separate seating area keeps control and shut-off functions apart, with Class V as standard and an optional protected soft seat for Class VI shut-off.
Key Features
The following features, from the Baker Hughes brochure and technical specification, explain why the Masoneilan 78400/18400 is specified for severe liquid letdown:
- Multi-stage axial-flow trim prevents cavitation by keeping local pressure above vapour pressure through every stage of the pressure reduction.
- Wide flow passages give a dirt-tolerant design that allows entrained particles to pass without clogging the trim.
- Custom staging of up to ten stages is available for pressure drops exceeding 8,000 psi (550 bar), with standard trim in 3, 4 and 6 stages.
- Trim overlap at low lift keeps high-velocity flow away from the seat, which protects the seating surface and extends service life.
- Angle (78400) and globe (18400) body styles, cast or forged, suit different piping layouts and pressure ratings up to ANSI 2500.
- API 6A versions for 10K and 15K pressure ratings are offered in the 1 to 6 inch sizes.
- Sour service construction can follow NACE MR0103, and the valve is designed with Pressure Equipment Directive requirements in mind.
- Pneumatic piston (Type 51/52/53) and multi-spring diaphragm (Type 87/88) actuators can be fitted, with SVI digital positioners available for control.
Industrial Applications
Baker Hughes lists power generation, refining, midstream and upstream oil and gas and pulp and paper as the industries for the Masoneilan 78400/18400. The brochure names pump recirculation, produced water injection, high-pressure separator letdown, rich amine service and cold high-pressure separator letdown, and for power plants pump recirculation, boiler feedwater start-up and high-pressure spray water control. These duties match Oman’s oilfield water injection and gathering systems, refinery hydroprocessing units, and the boiler feedwater systems of power and desalination plants where a failed letdown valve can stop a whole train.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 78400/18400 and the parts that keep it running. Maintenance teams can order the Masoneilan LincolnLog 78400/18400 seal kit, specify Masoneilan Type 51/52/53 pneumatic piston actuators for the stroking force, and for gas and compressible duty consider the V-LOG family through the Masoneilan 49000 V-LOG seal kit. Projects can combine these with the Masoneilan SVI3 digital valve positioner.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series
The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.Where Masoneilan valves are used
Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need
For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.Browse Masoneilan products by category: Control Valves, Valve Actuator, Regulators, Valve Positioner, Level Transmitter.
