Samson Type 41-23 Universal Pressure Reducing Valve
Description
Samson Type 41-23 universal pressure reducing valve for downstream pressure control
The Samson Type 41-23 is a self-operated pressure reducing valve that holds the downstream pressure at an adjustable set point without any auxiliary energy. It closes when the pressure after the valve rises, and it covers set points from 0.05 to 28 bar, nominal sizes DN 15 to 100 and pressure ratings PN 16, 25 and 40. It is suited to liquids, gases and vapors from –50 to 350 °C. Seven Star LLC supplies the Type 41-23 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
The assembly is made of a Type 2412 globe valve and a Type 2413 diaphragm or bellows actuator. The valve plug is balanced by a stainless steel bellows, the plug stem is sealed by a bellows rather than a rubbing packing, and every wetted part is free of non-ferrous metal.
How the 41-23 designation is built
The datasheet describes the DIN version, so confirm the flange standard when you order. The ordering text asks for the additional features, DN, body material, PN, the KVS coefficient, the set point range and the optional accessories or special version. In practice these are the choices that define a 41-23: body material (cast iron, spheroidal graphite iron, cast steel, stainless steel or forged), actuator type (diaphragm for 0.05 to 16 bar or bellows for 2 to 28 bar), and the trim (metal seat or soft seal).

How the 41-23 reducing valve works
The medium passes through the valve and the plug position sets the free area between plug and seat. The plug stem is joined to the stem of the actuator. A set point spring (or springs) and an adjusting nut tension the operating diaphragm so that, with no pressure difference, the valve is held open. The downstream pressure p2 is tapped after the valve and carried by a control line to the diaphragm, where it becomes a force opposing the spring. When p2 rises above the set point, the valve closes proportionally; when it falls, the valve opens.
Because the pressure on the plug is balanced by the bellows (upstream outside, downstream inside), changes in inlet pressure have little effect on the control position. This gives a stable outlet pressure over a wide inlet-pressure range with a simple proportional controller.
Set point ranges, actuators and KVS values of the 41-23
| Actuator area | Set point range | Actuator type |
|---|---|---|
| 640 cm² | 0.05 to 0.25 bar; 0.1 to 0.6 bar | Diaphragm |
| 320 cm² | 0.2 to 1.2 bar | Diaphragm |
| 160 cm² | 0.8 to 2.5 bar (1 to 2.5 bar with two diaphragms) | Diaphragm |
| 80 cm² | 2 to 5 bar | Diaphragm |
| 40 cm² | 4.5 to 10 bar; 8 to 16 bar | Diaphragm |
| 62 cm² | 2 to 6 bar; 5 to 10 bar | Bellows |
| 33 cm² | 10 to 22 bar; 20 to 28 bar | Bellows |
Standard KVS values by size are DN 15 = 4, DN 20 = 6.3, DN 25 = 8, DN 32 = 16, DN 40 = 20, DN 50 = 32, DN 65 = 50, DN 80 = 80 and DN 100 = 125. Reduced KVS trims down to 0.1 (and a micro-flow trim of 0.001 to 0.04 for DN 15 to 25) are available, and flow dividers ST 1 or ST 3 can be added (listed for DN 65 to 100) to reduce noise on gas and steam.
Where the 41-23 fits in the system and related parts
The Type 41-23 is the reducing member of the Samson universal series. Its counterpart is the Type 41-73 universal excess pressure valve, which has the same actuators but opens on rising upstream pressure, and the Type 2405 pressure reducing valve is a more compact regulator for lower set points and gas supply lines. Selection between them depends on whether you want to hold downstream pressure (41-23), relieve or hold upstream pressure (41-73), or regulate low-pressure fuel gas or blanketing gas (2405).
Accessories include a control line kit to tap the pressure directly at the valve body (for set points of 0.8 bar and above), a screw joint with restriction for a 6 mm control line that is supplied with the valve, compression fittings for 8 or 10 mm pipe, and a compensation chamber of 0.7, 1.5 or 2.4 litres for condensate and protection of the diaphragm. A compensation chamber is required for liquids above 150 °C and for steam.
Selection checklist for Type 41-23
- Medium, flow range and inlet and outlet pressures, to size the KVS and check differential pressure.
- Nominal size and PN, with body material suited to the fluid and temperature.
- Set point range and actuator: diaphragm for low and medium pressure, bellows above 10 bar.
- Seat type: metal seal for general service, soft seal for tight shut-off, Stellite-faced trim for wear.
- Special versions: FKM internals for mineral oil, oil-free for high purity, increased-safety actuator with leakage line or double diaphragm.
- Control line kit or compensation chamber when steam or hot liquid is controlled.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance
Install the valve with the actuator hanging downward, with the flow arrow matching the body, and with horizontal pipework sloping slightly to both sides for condensate drainage. The control line is not included in the standard scope of supply; it is routed from a straight pipe section downstream and should be sized and sloped according to site practice. For steam, fill the compensation chamber through the filler plug before start-up.
Set points are adjusted by turning a nut on the actuator and checked on a pressure gauge in the downstream line. Since the set point springs and the actuator are exchangeable, a change of duty can often be met by changing springs rather than the whole valve. Typical spares are the diaphragm, the seat and plug, and the bellows set.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
Self-operated reducing valves of this class are used for steam pressure reduction to tracing and heating headers, nitrogen and instrument-gas letdown, fuel-gas and utility air supply, cooling water and hot-oil systems in oil and gas, power, desalination and petrochemical plants. As no instrument air or electrical supply is needed, they are useful at remote sites and where a pressure loop must keep working during a power outage. High ambient temperatures and humid coastal air favor the stainless steel body and bellows construction.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types
Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.
Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.
Where Samson valves are used
Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.
