SICK AFM60A-S4NB018x12 PROFINET Absolute Encoder

Description

An 18 + 12 bit absolute encoder that connects straight to PROFINET

The SICK AFM60A-S4NB018x12 is the Ethernet member of the AFS/AFM60 family: a multiturn absolute encoder with 262,144 steps per turn and 4,096 turns that talks PROFINET directly, using encoder profile V4.1 class 3. Two M12 Ethernet ports allow line topologies without an external switch.

Because the position is delivered over the industrial network, there is no separate counter card or SSI interface to wire. Diagnostic data such as temperature extremes, operating hours and power-on count can be read from the encoder for maintenance planning.

Commissioning on a PROFINET network

The encoder starts up in about 6 seconds, then exchanges data with a cycle time of 1 ms or less. Steps per revolution, number of revolutions, preset, counting direction and the unit for the speed value are parameterised from the controller. A round-axis function supports rotary tables and other endless axes.

Power is supplied through a 4-pin M12 male connector at 10 to 30 V, and the two D-coded female M12 connectors carry the 10/100 Mbit/s network over CAT-5e cable. Confirm that the controller supports profile V4.1 and class 3 before purchase.

Selecting and ordering

PROFINET removes the need for a separate counter card, but it also means the encoder must be given a device name and an IP configuration during commissioning, and that the engineering project has to include the correct device description. Mechanical mounting follows the 60 mm servo-style flange used across the family, with a 10 mm shaft that needs a flexible coupling to protect the bearings against the 80 N radial and 40 N axial limits.

The same housing is offered with SSI, incremental and other fieldbus interfaces. Confirm before ordering: the network (PROFINET here), resolution split, flange and shaft, connector arrangement and cabling. See also the encoders category and the SICK SRS50 motor feedback encoder.

About brand

Machine builders have relied on SICK since 1946 for the sensors that tell a controller where a part, a pallet or a person is. The company, based in Waldkirch, Germany, makes photoelectric, inductive and magnetic sensors, distance sensors and safety devices. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK sensors to maintenance teams and integrators in Oman, mostly as exact replacements identified by type code and part number.

SICK sensor families on this page

Five of the SICK families listed here are described below. The W4 miniature photoelectric sensors include the WTB4-3, a proximity sensor with background suppression. IME is the standard inductive proximity line, and the IME18 is the M18 housing size. RZT7 cylinder sensors fit T-slot pneumatic cylinders and detect the piston magnet. The DT35 belongs to the Dx35 laser distance sensors for mid-range measurement. The microScan3 is a safety laser scanner that guards hazardous zones around machines and vehicles.

Where SICK sensors are used

SICK sensors are fitted on packaging and bottling lines, conveyors, palletizers, warehouse cranes and automated guided vehicles. Safety laser scanners protect robot cells and transfer cars. In process plants, the same proximity and cylinder sensors report valve and damper positions on packaged equipment.

Ordering SICK sensors: what we need

A SICK type code such as IME18-08NPSZW2K packs the whole specification into one string: housing size, sensing range, flush or non-flush mounting, output type and connection. Each variant also has a 7-digit part number, and that number is the safest identifier. Please send:

  • Type code and part number from the sensor label, or a photo of it
  • Output type (PNP or NPN, normally open or closed) and connection (cable length or M8/M12 plug)
  • For microScan3: variant (Core or Pro), interface, protective field range, plus system plug and bracket

We check the code in SICK's documentation and tell you if the manufacturer lists a successor.
