Steel-wheel pipe roll for shop and field pipe welding

The Pandjiris Super Piper 10/5 is a compact power roll for rotating pipe and small vessels under a fixed welding torch. It is rated for 10,000 lb turning and 5,000 lb load, uses 12 in steel wheels with positive gear drive, and covers pipe from 10 to 48 in diameter. Travel speed is set electronically between 6.1 and 184 in/min, a range wide enough for root, fill and cap passes with MIG, flux-cored or submerged-arc heads.

The unit plugs into an ordinary 115 V single-phase outlet and draws 6.5 A, which suits fabrication bays and temporary spool shops where three-phase power is not available. It is used with the SI/5 idler roll; one SP/10 power roll with one SI/5 idler carries a combined 10,000 lb.

Choosing rolls for pipe spools

Steel wheels give a stable drive on clean carbon-steel pipe and do not compress under load, so the surface speed at the weld stays consistent. Where pipe surfaces must not be marked, or when handling stainless steel, the buyer should consider the contamination risk of steel-on-stainless contact and discuss alternatives with the manufacturer.

A spool with a flange or elbow at one end is eccentric, and the 312 lb tractive effort is the figure that limits how much imbalance can be rotated smoothly. Long straight runs often need a second idler to keep the pipe level; place the rolls so the centre of gravity sits between them and check that the work does not walk along the wheels during the first rotation.

The pendant’s Weld/Rapid function lets the operator jog the pipe quickly to the start position and then return to the preset welding speed, which shortens set-up between joints. For mechanised work the roll is normally combined with a torch stand or a small manipulator, and the pipe surface speed set on the pendant becomes the welding travel speed, so the same procedure qualification values can be reproduced from one joint to the next without operator variation.
