Description
Five safety functions in one regulator-mounted flashback arrestor
The GCE SAFE-GUARD-5 is a 5-function flashback arrestor for oxy-fuel installations. GCE designed it to give the maximum level of protection required by ISO 5175-1, stopping a flashback before it reaches the regulator and the cylinder supply. It is fitted at the regulator outlet, in versions for oxygen and for fuel gases with European, American and French or Chinese connection threads.
Every unit is flame-tested in production for flashback resistance. A high-visibility trip and reset lever shows when the arrestor has operated and can be reset quickly even when pressurised; an angled inlet reduces hose strain, and the body label has space for marking inspection dates.

How the five functions protect the installation
The sintered flame-arresting element quenches a flame front travelling back from the torch. The non-return valve stops reverse gas flow, which prevents an explosive mixture forming in the hose or regulator. The pressure-sensitive valve closes on the pressure wave of a flashback, and the temperature-sensitive valve shuts off the gas if the unit heats up, for example from a sustained backfire. The reset lever then shows clearly that the device has tripped; the cause should be found before resetting and continuing work.
An oxygen unit and a fuel unit are needed for each regulator pair, with left-hand threads on the fuel side. The flow charts in the GCE brochure show flow against pressure drop for fuel gas, oxygen and acetylene at several inlet pressures, and the brochure gives conversion coefficients for other gases. Check that the expected torch flow can pass the arrestor without an excessive pressure drop, especially with large heating nozzles. The arrestors suit cutting, welding and heating torches such as the GCE X511 Original cutting torch.
