Masoneilan 81/82 Series Pneumatic Spring-Diaphragm Actuators

Description

Overview

The Masoneilan 81/82 is a family of pneumatic multi-spring diaphragm actuators from Baker Hughes that supplies the driving force for reciprocating control valves. The series is covered by a technical specification dated Rev. A, 03/2026, which makes it one of the more recently documented Masoneilan actuator lines. Two letters of the model number carry the action: 81 is the direct actuator, in which rising air pressure on top of the diaphragm pushes the stem down, and 82 is the reverse actuator, in which air pressure under the diaphragm pulls the stem up against the springs.

Seven Star LLC is the trusted supplier for Masoneilan in the Sultanate of Oman and supplies the Masoneilan 81/82 range together with the globe valves, positioners and accessories it is mounted on. Because the model code of an installed actuator tells our Muscat engineers its size, travel and spring range, a replacement or a new actuator for a refinery, power or water plant in the GCC can usually be confirmed from the nameplate before an RFQ is raised.

How the Masoneilan 81/82 Produces Valve Motion

In a Masoneilan 81/82 actuator a flexible diaphragm separates two chambers. One chamber receives the instrument air signal, normally from a positioner or an I/P transducer, and the other holds a set of springs and is vented. The air pressure acting on the diaphragm area creates a force, the springs resist it, and the stem settles where the two forces balance. Baker Hughes notes that the actuator characteristic gives a linear relationship between stroke and air pressure, so a change in signal produces a proportional change in plug position.

The same hardware can deliver either failure direction. Where the valve design allows the body and plug to be inverted, the direct actuator gives either air-to-close or air-to-open action. Where it does not, the reverse actuator is used to obtain air-to-open action, and the spring, diaphragm and diaphragm plate are inverted so that pressure in the lower case drives the stem upward. Because the springs are always the fail-safe element, the Masoneilan 81/82 drives the valve to its spring position when the air supply is lost.

Sizes, Travel and Spring Ranges of the Masoneilan 81/82

The Masoneilan 81/82 multi-spring type is built in four sizes, 11M, 13M, 15M and 18M. The maximum travel rises with size: 20.32 mm for the 11M, 38.1 mm for the 13M, 50.8 mm for the 15M and 63.5 mm for the 18M. Standard spring ranges run from 20 to 100 kPa up to 120 to 230 kPa, depending on size and travel, and several of the higher ranges are available only for reverse actuators, so a valve that needs a high bench range for tight shutoff is normally paired with an 82 reverse unit.

The specification lists a maximum supply pressure of 350 kPa for the multi-spring type and below 280 kPa for the single-spring type, with a single-spring option at 101.6 mm travel. The ambient temperature range is -45 degC to +100 degC, which covers cold desert nights as well as sun-heated piping in Oman. Side-mounted handwheels are offered as an option, with 6M1 for the 11M, 6M2 for the 13M, 6M3 or 6M4 for the 15M and 6M5 or 6M6 for the 18M.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 81/82

The construction drawings of the Masoneilan 81/82 identify nineteen reference parts. The main pressure boundary is formed by the upper and lower diaphragm cases, with the diaphragm clamped between them and supported by a diaphragm plate. The actuator stem is guided by a bushing and protected by a scraper ring, and an O-ring seals the stem where it leaves the pressure chamber. A stop cup limits the diaphragm travel, a travel stop and set screw allow the stroke to be limited, and a vent cap keeps the spring side open to atmosphere without admitting debris.

For the 18M size the reverse actuator uses a spring spacer and collar arrangement that Baker Hughes notes may be used where required by travel. A caution plate is fitted to warn maintenance staff that the springs store energy. The multi-spring layout lets one case size accommodate several spring ranges, which is why the specification tabulates so many bench ranges for each size of the Masoneilan 81/82.

Key Features

The following points explain why the Masoneilan 81/82 is used on control valves in process plants:

  • The Masoneilan 81/82 is documented in four sizes, 11M, 13M, 15M and 18M, covering travels from 20.32 mm to 63.5 mm.
  • Direct (81) and reverse (82) versions let the same actuator family provide air-to-close or air-to-open valve action.
  • Multi-spring construction gives a linear relationship between air pressure and stroke, which suits positioner-driven throttling duty.
  • Standard spring ranges from 20 to 100 kPa through 120 to 230 kPa are offered, so the bench range can be matched to the valve shutoff force.
  • The maximum supply pressure of the multi-spring type is 350 kPa, and the ambient range is -45 degC to +100 degC.
  • Optional side-mounted handwheels 6M1 to 6M6 provide manual override when the air supply is not available.
  • An adjustable travel stop and a scraper ring on the stem make commissioning and long-term maintenance simpler.
  • The Rev. A 03/2026 technical specification includes construction drawings and dimension tables for each size.

Industrial Applications

The Masoneilan 81/82 is applied wherever a reciprocating control valve needs a robust, air-driven, spring-return actuator: boiler feedwater and attemperation control, condensate and heater drains, fuel gas pressure control, and cooling water and seawater service at coastal plants around Sohar, Salalah and Duqm. Typical choices are an 81 direct actuator on a normally closed valve and an 82 reverse actuator on a valve that must open on air failure, and the spring range is chosen from the table so that the valve closes against its full differential pressure.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 81/82 with the valve and positioner as one engineered package. Existing plants can compare it with the Masoneilan Type 87/88 spring-diaphragm actuators and the Masoneilan Camflex rotary control valve, which uses a related actuator family for quarter-turn duty. Our engineers will recommend whichever model fits the stroke, thrust and fail-safe action of the valve.

About brand
Masoneilan has built control valves since 1882, and its Camflex eccentric plug rotary valve and 21000 series globe valve are fixtures in refineries, gas plants and power stations. Every valve carries a serial number and a long model number that defines the actuator, body and trim. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Masoneilan control valves, actuators, regulators, positioners and level instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. We source complete valves as well as Masoneilan spare parts against that nameplate data.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series

The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.

Where Masoneilan valves are used

Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.

Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need

For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.
