Brand:

Flowserve Automax SuperNova Pneumatic Actuator S050-SN300

Description

Automax SuperNova rack and pinion pneumatic actuator, S050 to SN300

The Flowserve Automax SuperNova (S Series) is a pneumatic rack and pinion actuator for quarter-turn valves such as ball, plug and butterfly valves. It is built as a spring-return version, where springs drive the valve to its fail position on air loss, and as a double-acting version that uses air in both directions.

Seven Star LLC supplies the SuperNova range in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat. This is a model series from S050 to SN300, so the actuator size and spring set are selected from the valve torque and the air supply.

How the SuperNova actuator works

Air pushes two pistons that carry racks, and the racks turn a central pinion. The pinion shaft drives the valve through the ISO 5211 connection. In the double-acting model air acts in both directions and torque is constant over the travel. In the spring-return model, springs in the end caps give the return stroke, so torque varies with position: spring start and end values and air start and end values must all be compared with the valve torque.

Concentric springs and field-reversible construction mean that the fail position can be changed on site by reversing the pistons. Independent open and closed travel stops are standard on S050 to S200, which allows precise end-position setting.

Sizing a SuperNova actuator

For double acting actuators, take the maximum static torque of the valve, add a safety factor of usually 25 to 50 percent depending on valve type, and select the model whose torque at your minimum air pressure meets that value. Spring return units are sized the same way but compared with the lower of the spring-end and air-end torque. Spring sets 04 to 12 are available, and the standard spring configurations are balanced for supply pressures of 3, 4, 5 and 5.5 bar.

Examples from the torque table: a S100 double-acting unit gives 113 Nm at 5 bar, a S150D gives 478 Nm at 5 bar, and a S200D gives 1,021 Nm at 5 bar. Final selection should always follow the manufacturer’s torque table for the exact spring set.

SuperNova selection and ordering checklist

  • Valve type, size and maximum torque, including safety factor.
  • Fail action: spring return (close or open) or double acting.
  • Minimum and maximum air supply pressure.
  • Valve mounting standard and drive dimensions (ISO 5211 flange and star size).
  • Ambient temperature and need for low or high temperature option.
  • Coating needs, for example MaxGuard for corrosive atmospheres.
  • Accessories: NAMUR solenoid, limit switch box, positioner.
  • Rotation angle if different from 90 °.

Installation and maintenance of SuperNova actuators

Fit the actuator to the valve with the correct bracket and coupling, align the pinion and the stem, and set the travel stops with the valve in the open and closed positions. Use clean, dry air; the design can work with non-lubricated air. Maintenance on site needs no special tools, and repair kits include the O-rings, piston guides and bearings, so a complete overhaul is practical.

Fit spring cartridges only as supplied; never open an end cap on a spring-return unit with the springs under load without the procedure in the manual. Stroke the valve periodically, since a long-idle valve often shows the highest breakaway torque.

SuperNova applications in Oman and the GCC

These actuators operate on-off and emergency shutdown valves at oil and gas facilities, power plants, water treatment and desalination, and petrochemical plants. Outdoor sun, dust and salt air make the coating, the stainless fasteners and the high temperature option relevant, and the SIL 2 rating supports use in safety instrumented functions.

For emergency shutdown duty, the spring-return actuator is the usual choice because the springs return the valve without air. For modulating control, a double-acting unit with a positioner is common. Tell us which role the valve plays so that the spring set, volume booster or fast-acting option can be suggested accordingly.
