Biffi ALGAS Spring-Return Pneumatic Actuator

Description

Overview

The Biffi ALGAS is the spring-return, fail-safe variant of Biffi’s ALGA scotch-yoke quarter-turn actuator family, purpose-built for pneumatic automation of ball, butterfly, and plug valves on emergency shutdown (ESD) and safety-instrumented duty. Where the double-acting ALGA relies on supply pressure for both strokes, the Biffi ALGAS stores mechanical energy in a stack of pre-loaded compression springs during the powered opening stroke and releases that stored energy to drive the valve to its safe position automatically on loss of instrument air, loss of electrical signal to the solenoid, or an intentional safety trip. Design pressure reaches 12 barg, with an operating supply window of 3–12 barg, and a standard operating temperature range of −20°C to +100°C extendable with optional seals, matching the double-acting ALGA’s broad environmental envelope.

With engineering support in Muscat, Seven Star LLC supplies the ALGAS spring-return actuator, and the complete Biffi pneumatic and hydraulic actuation range, to EPC contractors and safety engineers across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC.Seven Star LLC supplies this item on request with the manufacturer documentation, and availability and lead time are confirmed at quotation.

Operating Principle of the Biffi ALGAS

The Biffi ALGAS uses the same scotch-yoke conversion mechanism as the double-acting ALGA – pistons drive rollers along a slotted yoke keyed to the output shaft – but one side of the piston assembly is permanently loaded against a spring pack rather than against supply air. During normal operation, instrument air compresses the springs and holds the valve in its energized (typically open) position; the moment that air pressure is removed, whether by a solenoid de-energizing on an ESD signal or by an actual loss of plant air, the spring pack drives the piston back through its stroke and forces the valve closed (or open, depending on fail-safe direction) without any external power source.

Because the spring-return stroke is entirely self-powered, the Biffi ALGAS provides a genuinely passive safety function: it requires no standby battery, no backup air receiver sized for the trip event, and no operator intervention to reach its safe state. The spring force is sized during actuator selection to overcome the valve’s maximum breakout and running torque at the worst-case design pressure and temperature, so correct sizing calculation at the quotation stage is essential – a service our engineering team provides on every ALGAS enquiry.

Engineering Design of the Biffi ALGAS

The Biffi ALGAS shares its cast housing, ISO 5211 mounting interface, and enclosure rating (confirm at quotation) with the double-acting ALGA, but the cylinder assembly is extended to accommodate the spring cartridge, which is factory pre-compressed and shipped in a secured, safe-to-handle state. Spring cartridges are available in multiple force ranges per body size, allowing the correct fail-safe torque to be matched precisely to the valve without over-specifying a larger actuator body than the application needs.

A declutchable manual override allows technicians to stroke the valve against the spring force for testing or maintenance without discharging the full spring energy, and external travel-stop bolts permit independent field adjustment of the open and closed end positions. As with the ALGA, corrosion-resistant coatings and stainless external hardware are available for coastal and offshore installations, and the same modular accessory interface accepts solenoid valves, limit switches, and positioners on the ISO 5211 mounting pattern.

Key Features

The Biffi ALGAS combines fail-safe reliability with the same proven mechanical platform as its double-acting sibling.

  • The scotch-yoke spring-return mechanism drives the valve to its fail-safe position automatically on loss of air supply or ESD signal, with no external power required.
  • Spring cartridges are available in multiple force ranges per body size, allowing precise torque matching without over-sizing the actuator.
  • Design pressure up to 12 barg and a 3–12 barg operating window suit standard plant instrument air networks.
  • The declutchable manual override allows safe functional testing of the valve stroke without discharging full spring energy.
  • Standard ISO 5211 mounting keeps spare-parts logistics simple across mixed double-acting and spring-return actuator fleets.
  • Optional corrosion-resistant coatings suit both desert and coastal GCC installations.
  • Field-adjustable travel stops let commissioning engineers fine-tune open and closed positions to the exact valve seat.
  • Extended-temperature seal options are available; range confirmed at quotation.

Industrial Applications

The Biffi ALGAS is specified wherever a quarter-turn valve must reach a defined safe position automatically on loss of power or air – emergency shutdown valves on wellheads and pipeline block stations, blowdown valves on separator and compressor packages, and safety-critical isolation valves in gas processing trains. Across Oman’s upstream and midstream gas infrastructure, the ALGAS is a standard choice for ESD valve packages where the consequence of a stuck-open or stuck-closed valve during a plant trip is severe, and its purely mechanical fail-safe action removes dependency on backup electrical or pneumatic systems that themselves need maintenance and testing.

Backed by manufacturer datasheet documentation, Seven Star LLC distributes the ALGAS to safety and instrumentation departments across the Sohar and Salalah economic free zones and to EPC contractors delivering new gas and process infrastructure across the GCC. Lead time and availability for spring-cartridge sizes and torque ranges are confirmed at quotation, so safety-critical replacement actuators can be planned ahead of a plant shutdown.

About brand

Biffi is an Italian maker of valve actuators for the oil and gas and petrochemical industries. Its first factory opened in 1955 in Fiorenzuola d'Arda, near Piacenza, making electric actuators for the Italian petrochemical industry; the company moved to its present site in 1969. Biffi is now part of Emerson, and its pneumatic, hydraulic and electric actuators drive pipeline, wellhead and shutdown valves.

Seven Star LLC lists Biffi actuators across these operating media and supplies them to valve automation shops and operators in Oman, sized from the valve torque data.

Biffi actuator series on this page

The series names follow a logic that helps when reading a tag. ALGA is the pneumatic quarter-turn actuator and ALGAS its spring-return version. OLGA-H is the hydraulic quarter-turn actuator and OLGAS-H the fail-safe hydraulic version with spring. In the compact rack-and-pinion group, RPD and RPS are the double-acting and spring-return pneumatic pair, and RPHD and RPHS are their hydraulic counterparts. The F01 and F02 are electric quarter-turn actuators, the ICON2000 and ICON3000 are electric multi-turn actuators and the EFS 3000 is a fail-safe electric quarter-turn actuator; the manufacturer now names the Bettis SCE300 as the replacement for the F02. In each pair the S marks the model that returns to a safe position by spring.

Where Biffi actuators are used

Typical duties are emergency shutdown and blowdown valves, pipeline block valves, wellhead and manifold valves, tank farm isolation and large ball valves at compressor and metering stations. Spring-return models are chosen for fail-safe service. Hydraulic and electro-hydraulic units appear where instrument air is not on hand, as on remote GCC pipeline stations.

Ordering Biffi actuators: what we need

Actuators are sized, so the valve data comes first: valve type and size, the torque curve or at least break, run and end torques, the safety factor in your specification and the stem and mounting flange dimensions. Then the supply: minimum and maximum air or oil pressure, or voltage for electric units. State the fail action, stroking time, ambient temperature and the control accessories required. For an existing actuator send the model and serial number from the nameplate.

Facts checked against Biffi's own history (Emerson), October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
