Air Torque DRSC00300S Stainless Steel Pneumatic Actuator

Overview

The Air Torque DRSC00300S is the stainless steel version of the Air Torque size 300 rack and pinion actuator, listed on the manufacturer site as DR/SC00300U S within the Edition 2010 stainless steel (VA) line. Body, end caps and drive shaft are made from 316-grade stainless steel, which removes the coating as the weak point in washdown, marine and chemically aggressive areas. Output is the same as the aluminium size 300: 332 Nm double acting at 6 bar, and 198 Nm at the 90° spring position and 126 Nm at the 0° spring position for spring return builds.

Operating Principle

The working principle of the Air Torque DRSC00300S is identical to the aluminium range: two racked pistons drive a central pinion through 90°. Port 2 pressure separates the pistons and turns the shaft, and port 4 pressure returns them in double acting DR builds; in spring return SC builds the stroke back is made by springs, giving a fail position on loss of supply. The stainless technical data sheet gives indicative stroking times measured at 5.5 bar with a 4 mm orifice solenoid valve and 8 mm tubing: 0.9 s opening and 1.1 s closing for DR, and 1.2 s opening and 1.4 s closing for SC.

The same sheet lists the air consumption of the Air Torque DRSC00300S as 1.54 litres for the opening stroke and 2.34 litres for the closing stroke. These figures are useful when sizing instrument air headers, buffer vessels and solenoid valves on skids with many actuators, and when estimating how a valve will behave during an emergency shutdown that relies on a limited air reserve. Air Torque cautions that real stroking times change with supply pressure, tubing, accessories and valve load.

Engineering Design of the Air Torque DRSC00300S

According to the 4th Generation stainless steel technical data, the Air Torque DRSC00300S body is stainless steel 1.4401 (F316 to ASTM A182) and the end caps for sizes up to 00300S are cast stainless steel 1.4408 (CF8M to ASTM A351), both with electroless nickel plating, and the integral drive shaft is also 1.4401 stainless steel. End cap screws and washers are A4-70 stainless steel, while bearings, piston guides and the position indicator are high-grade polymers and O-rings are M-NBR. Pistons are anodized pressure die-cast aluminium as standard; the manufacturer offers stainless steel pistons and springs as options, which raise the maximum control pressure to 15 bar.

Dimensionally, the Air Torque DRSC00300S measures 345 mm long (A), 157 mm high (B) and approximately 159 mm deep (C), with top accessory interface dimensions F of 80 mm and G of 30 mm. The ISO 5211 base offers F07 and F10 drilling with a 22 mm female square and a centering ring, and the air ports are 1/4 inch ISO 228, with NPT threads available on request. Approximate weight is 22.6 kg for the DR and 24.5 kg for the SC version. A spare parts list with complete and O-ring kits is included in the datasheet.
