Masoneilan 87/88 Size 23L Long-Stroke Spring-Diaphragm Actuator (4 in. Travel)

Overview

The Masoneilan 87/88 Size 23L is the long-stroke member of the Baker Hughes Type 87/88 pneumatic multi-spring diaphragm actuator family. It shares the 230 sq. in. (1,484 sq. cm) effective diaphragm area of the ordinary size 23, but where the size 23 stops at 2.5 in. of travel the 23L is offered with 3.0, 3.5 or 4.0 in. (76, 89 or 102 mm), at the same 60 psi (4.1 bar) maximum supply as every other size. The manual also calls it the “4 inch” actuator. Model 87 is air to close (extend stem) and Model 88 is air to open (retract stem).

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 87/88 Size 23L in Oman and the GCC. It is the only 87/88 size that can drive valves needing more than 2.5 in. of stem movement, such as larger globe valves, while keeping the spring fail-safe behaviour of the diaphragm design.

Masoneilan 87/88 Size 23L: What Makes It Different From Size 23

Four design points separate the long-stroke actuator from its shorter sibling. First, the stem connection uses a split clamp, indicator arm and indicator plate in place of the two-piece stem connector of sizes 10, 16 and 23 (manual section 10.3). Second, action cannot be changed in the field: the manual states that the size 23L cannot be converted between Model 87 and Model 88, whereas sizes 6, 10, 16 and 23 can. Third, the case carries an eye nut lifting lug (item 19a). Fourth, the handwheel needs 440 turns for full travel, compared with 25 turns on the size 23.

Because action cannot be changed, the choice between Model 87 and Model 88 must be right at order stage. Air-to-close (87) fails the valve open when air is lost; air-to-open (88) fails it closed. Confirm the fail position with the valve datasheet.

Spring Ranges and Colour Codes of the Masoneilan 87/88 Size 23L

For 4 in. travel the manual lists four standard spring ranges: 3-15 and 6-30 psi (Purple, three and six springs) and 11-23 and 21-45 psi (Orange, three and six springs with spacers). The technical specification adds shorter-travel combinations for the Masoneilan 87/88 Size 23L, for example Model 88 at 3.5 in. with 9-30 or 24-45 psi and at 3.0 in. with 12-30 or 27-45 psi.

Dimensions and Weights of the Masoneilan 87/88 Size 23L

Without a handwheel, height B is 27.79 in. (706 mm) for 3-15 and 6-30 psi springs and 30.74 in. (781 mm) for 11-23 and 21-45 psi springs. With a handwheel, B grows to 38.54 in. (979 mm) for the lower ranges, 41.49 in. (1,054 mm) for 11-23 psi and 56.57 in. (1,437 mm) for 21-45 psi, and the 21-45 version widens to A = 26.81 in. (681 mm). Weights run from 374.8 lb (170 kg) to 612.9 lb (278 kg), so a lifting plan must use the lug and allow 6 in. of removal clearance. Limit stops add height: the up-stop version is 38.4 in. (975 mm) or 41.3 in. (1,050 mm) without handwheel, and the down-stop version is 1.5 in. taller.

Coastal and Marine Option for the Masoneilan 87/88 Size 23L

Oman’s coastline puts many installations in salt-laden air at Sohar, Duqm, Salalah and Muscat. The manual lists a “Stainless Steel option for coastal/marine environment for size 23L” that substitutes stainless steel for the lock nut, stem connectors, cap screws, connector insert, actuator stem (10), yoke cap screw, lifting-lug eye nut, compression bolts and nuts (27 and 28) and spring lock washer (108). State the option on the order if the Masoneilan 87/88 Size 23L will see salt air.

Mounting and Stem Setting of the Masoneilan 87/88 Size 23L

Section 10.3 of the manual gives the sequence for a 23L on a metal-seated reciprocating valve: install the actuator with the drive nut, connect a manual loading panel, retract the stem pneumatically to the metal touch point of full open, extend it to the rated valve stroke and hold, position the split clamp over both stems and fit the indicator arm and plate. Confirm the rated stroke before removing the loading panel. For removal, sections 6.6 and 6.7 require the plug off the seat, a flex connection in the air line and the split clamp removed before lifting.
