Bettis G-Series Pneumatic Scotch Yoke Actuator

Description

Overview

The Bettis G-Series is Emerson’s heavy-duty pneumatic scotch yoke actuator for quarter-turn valves, built to operate ball, butterfly and plug valves as well as louvers, dampers and other 90 degree mechanisms. It is one of the most widely specified actuator families on large isolation and emergency shutdown valves, because it combines very high torque output with a modular construction that can be serviced in the field. Emerson describes the design as lighter and smaller than other actuators of equal torque output, roughly one third lighter and half the size, which matters on crowded skids, wellhead platforms and pipe racks.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Bettis G-Series to oil and gas operators, EPC contractors and utilities in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. As a trusted supplier with regional stock and engineering support in Muscat, we help project teams match actuator size, spring set and accessories to the valve torque data, so that each automated valve leaves the workshop ready for commissioning.

Operating Principle

A scotch yoke actuator such as the Bettis G-Series converts the straight-line stroke of a piston into rotation of the output shaft. In the G-Series, air acting on the piston drives a piston rod and guide block that slide a pin along the slot of a yoke keyed to the drive shaft. Because the effective lever arm changes as the yoke turns, the torque curve is highest at the start and end of the stroke, which is where a quarter-turn valve needs the most torque to break out of and seat into its closed position. A canted yoke shifts even more torque to the breakout point for valves with high unseating demand, while the symmetric yoke gives balanced output at both ends.

Double-acting Bettis G-Series models use supply pressure to drive the piston in both directions. Spring-return models use air to stroke the valve and compress a spring module, then the stored spring force returns the valve to its fail-safe position when supply pressure is lost or vented by a solenoid valve. This fail-safe behaviour is the reason the Bettis G-Series is commonly selected for emergency shutdown, blowdown and process isolation duties where the valve must move without any external power.

Engineering Design of the Bettis G-Series

The Bettis G-Series is a true modular design with separate drive, power and spring modules bolted together by external fasteners. Power and spring modules are interchangeable, so the fail-safe direction can be reversed and a double-acting unit can be converted to spring-return, or a hydraulic override added, after the valve is installed. Modules can be removed without special tools or disassembly of other modules. The patented Tension-Lok device positively locks the spring module during removal and installation, preventing accidental release of the spring force, and the Powr-Swivl piston rod and guide block connection compensates for side-load deflection to reduce wear.

The pneumatic power module uses dual internal tie bars of high strength alloy steel with corrosion and wear resistant coatings. Two 316 stainless steel vent checks, breather seals and total O-ring sealing without gaskets keep water and dust out, and the actuator meets IP66 and IP67M for submergence and high pressure water deluge. A full length keyed female drive connection follows MSS SP-101 or ISO 5211, accessory mounting follows NAMUR, and integral bidirectional travel stops give 80 to 100 degrees of total travel adjustment.

Key Features

The main reasons engineers specify the Bettis G-Series on critical quarter-turn valves are summarised below.

  • Spring-return models deliver guaranteed torque outputs in excess of 339,000 Nm, and double-acting models cover roughly 1,420 to 678,000 Nm.
  • Pneumatic operating pressure is 3 to 14 bar (40 to 220 psig), with hydraulic versions rated to 345 bar (5,000 psig).
  • The modular construction allows safe field maintenance, quick reversal of the fail-safe mode and lower spare parts inventory.
  • The Tension-Lok spring module lock and Powr-Swivl guide block improve maintenance safety and reduce wear.
  • IP66 and IP67M sealing with O-rings and no gaskets protects internals against water ingress and corrosion.
  • Symmetric or canted yokes let the torque curve be matched to the valve’s breakout and running torque profile.
  • FMEDA reporting through exida supports SIL suitability, and a FIELDVUE controller adds partial stroke testing for SIL 1, 2 or 3 loops.
  • Manual and hydraulic overrides include the M3 jackscrew for G1 to G3 models, the M11 hydraulic override and the G-Ride gear override for G4 and G5 spring-return units.

Industrial Applications

In the oil and gas sector the Bettis G-Series is used on pipeline block valves, ESD and blowdown valves at gathering stations, wellhead and manifold valves, and large isolation valves in gas processing trains. The canted yoke version suits high breakout ball valves, while the spring-return design suits fail-closed or fail-open shutdown service. Related variants such as the GH-Series offer higher maximum operating pressure, and the GS-Series is adapted for splash zone and subsea-adjacent offshore duty. Emerson also notes that the Bettis G-Series was the first complete actuator line to pass the Shell endurance test according to Shell DEP and EN 15714-3.

Beyond hydrocarbons, the Bettis G-Series operates large butterfly valves and dampers in power generation, petrochemical, pulp and paper, chemical and wastewater plants. Seven Star LLC supports these projects across Muscat, Sohar, Duqm and the wider GCC as a trusted supplier, coordinating actuator, solenoid, limit switch and positioner selection so that the Bettis G-Series package fits the site’s air supply, hazardous area and control philosophy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What torque range does the Bettis G-Series cover?
Emerson publishes double-acting torque outputs from about 1,420 to 678,000 Nm and spring-return outputs in excess of 339,000 Nm. The exact value depends on the model size, supply pressure and spring set, so final sizing should use the G-Series torque charts against the valve torque data.
Can the fail-safe direction of a Bettis G-Series be changed in the field?
Yes. The power and spring modules are interchangeable and bolt to the drive module, so the fail-safe mode can be reversed or a double-acting unit converted to spring-return without special tools. The Tension-Lok device keeps the spring module locked while it is handled.
Is the Bettis G-Series suitable for SIL-rated ESD valves?
Emerson states that G-Series actuators have FMEDA reporting through exida for SIL suitability. When combined with a TUV-certified FIELDVUE digital valve controller, the assembly can perform partial stroke testing and monitor supply pressure and valve position in SIL 1, 2 or 3 applications.
What overrides are available for the G-Series?
Options include the M3 jackscrew manual override with or without handwheel for G1 to G3 models, the M11 hydraulic override for spring-return pneumatic or hydraulic models, and the G-Ride non-declutchable gear override for G4 and G5 spring-return models.
Does Seven Star LLC supply the Bettis G-Series in Oman?
Yes. Seven Star LLC supplies Bettis G-Series actuators, spare modules and mounting accessories to customers in Oman and across the GCC. As a trusted supplier we provide regional stock and engineering support in Muscat for sizing and package configuration.
