Overview
The Masoneilan 73000 Series is a sweep angle control valve from Baker Hughes designed to throttle highly erosive, flashing and two-phase flows. In a sweep angle body the flow turns through a long, gradual bend instead of the abrupt corner of a conventional angle valve, which reduces the impact of entrained solids and the violence of flashing against the body walls. Operating Principle
The Masoneilan 73000 throttles by moving a plug against a seat ring at the bottom of the sweep body. The seat ring is clamped between the valve body and the lower pipeline flange, with a gasket on the pipeline side, which is why the instruction manual stresses pressing the seat ring against the body when the lower flange is secured. The plug is driven through a split clamp that couples the actuator piston rod to the plug stem, and the stem is sealed by a packing box containing guide bushing, packing, packing spacer and lantern ring.
The trim choices are what let the valve tolerate bad fluids. Baker Hughes lists a high-capacity single-stage trim and a reduced-port venturi outlet trim, with ceramic and tungsten carbide trim available as options where erosion is severe. The inherent characteristic is linear, and actuators are Model 87/88 multi-spring-opposed diaphragm actuators or cylinder actuators; the instruction manual covers the piston-actuated arrangement, in which the piston rod is raised or lowered by air pressure or by handwheel operation during maintenance.
Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 73000
The Masoneilan 73000 Series is offered in flanged ANSI Class 150 to 2500 ratings. Body materials listed by Baker Hughes are carbon steel, stainless steel, titanium and Hastelloy, with other materials available, which allows the valve to be matched to corrosive refinery and petrochemical streams. The instruction manual covers the Models XX-73471 construction and describes a bonnet arrangement with a packing flange held by stud nuts, a yoke connected to the body by a drive nut or by studs and nuts, and an optional extension bonnet.
The manual is practical about field handling. The valve must be installed with flow in the direction shown by the flow arrows or from the connection marked IN toward OUT, the pipeline must be cleaned of weld spatter, scale and debris before installation, and a horizontally installed valve must be supported from the yoke or another part of the actuator. On an extension bonnet, insulation must not be applied to the extended portion. Baker Hughes states an estimated useful life of more than 25 years for the series, provided that annual inspection, routine maintenance and correct installation are carried out.

These are processes in which a pressure letdown can flash a liquid or carry catalyst fines and coke, which is exactly the case in which a sweep angle body outperforms a conventional globe.
