Masoneilan 41005 API 6A High Pressure Cage-Guided Globe Control Valve
Overview
The Masoneilan 41005 API 6A is the high pressure version of the Baker Hughes Masoneilan 41005 Series cage-guided globe control valve. It is a single-ported, cage-guided valve designed to meet the API 6A standard for high pressure applications, offered in 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10 inch body sizes with API 10K (690 bar) and API 15K (1034 bar) pressure ratings. Where the standard 41005 is a balanced, ASME-rated body, the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A uses a forged body, a bolted bonnet joint with a metal seal and printed 6BX end flanges so that wellhead-class pressures can be controlled with a rugged cage trim.

High Pressure Design of the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A
Baker Hughes describes the forged globe body of the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A as handling pressure up to 15K PSI in operation, and the body and bonnet are held together by a bolted joint and a metallic seal, which gives low leakage at that pressure. The valve ends are designed to API 6A for 6BX printed flanges, which are the only flange type available, and the valve end sizes are 4-1/16 in (4.0625) for the 3 inch body, 5-1/8 in (5.125) for the 4 inch, 7-1/16 in (7.0625) for the 6 inch, 9 in for the 8 inch and 11 in for the 10 inch body. The pressure containing parts are identified in the technical specification as parts under the API 6A specification, and the serial plate records the working pressure, material class, temperature class and product specification level.
The Masoneilan 41005 API 6A is a control valve and not a shut-off valve. The technical specification and the instruction manual both say that it should be closed only for a short period, because holding the valve closed for a long period risks damaging the trim parts, and that it is designed as a control valve, not an isolating valve. A separate block valve must be fitted wherever tight isolation is needed.
Cage Trim and Pressure Drop Limits
The trim of the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A is an integral seat ring and cage, available with a linear characteristic and three cage options. The numbering system identifies them as model 41315 for a linear ported cage, 41335 for a single stage Lo-dB or anti-cavitation cage and 41355 for a double stage Lo-dB cage. The cage pressure drop of the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A is mechanically limited, and Baker Hughes states the limits clearly: 7252 PSI (500 bar) for the double cage, 4351 PSI (300 bar) for the single stage Lo-dB and 870 PSI (60 bar) for the ported cage. These limits are separate from the API pressure rating of the body, so a high pressure body does not automatically mean a high pressure drop trim.
On the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A, hardened trim is provided to handle erosion in high pressure drop applications, and the quick-change integral seat ring and cage allows rapid disassembly. The balanced plug uses a pressure-energized polymeric seal ring, and the cage gasket is also pressure energized and polymeric. Class IV and V leakage to IEC 60534-4 is standard. The double stage cage of the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A is available in 3 to 8 inch sizes only, because Baker Hughes states that this option is not available for 10 inch API 6A valves, and it is a low noise trim for gas only and works in the flow-to-open direction.
Flow Capacity of the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A
The rated Cv of the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A depends on the body size and the cage. For the linear ported cage (41315), the rated Cv at 100 percent travel is 155 for the 3 inch valve, 214 for the 4 inch, 400 for the 6 inch, 640 for the 8 inch and 1000 for the 10 inch, with FL falling from 0.94 at 10 percent travel to 0.90 at full travel. For the single stage Lo-dB cage (41335) the values are 78, 140, 230, 340 and 500, and FL is 0.94 across the stroke. For the double stage cage (41355) the values are 42, 66, 90 and 140 in the 3 to 8 inch range, and FL is 0.95. Travel of the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A runs from 2 inch (50.8 mm) on the 3 and 4 inch valves to 3.5 inch (88.9 mm) on the 10 inch valve.
Materials and Temperature Classes
Four material families are offered for the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A: martensitic stainless steel ASTM A182 grade F6NM, duplex F51, super duplex F55 and Inconel 718. The martensitic, super duplex and Inconel constructions cover maximum operating pressure up to 15 kPSI (1034 bar), while the duplex F51 construction covers up to 10 kPSI (690 bar). Material classes AA, BB and CC are general service, and DD, EE, FF and HH are sour service; the martensitic, duplex and super duplex steels are available for class FF, and Inconel 718 for all sour classes. The cage is ASTM A182 grade F6NM class B with chrome plating and Stellite No. 6 hardfacing, the plug is hardfaced with Stellite 6 on 6NM, and the body gasket is alloy 718 with a molybdenum disulfide coating. Temperature classes of the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A from K to X range from -60°C (-75°F) to +180°C (+350°F), and the sour service design follows ANSI/NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-1.
Size, Weight and Maintenance Data
The Masoneilan 41005 API 6A is a heavy valve. Its body sub-assembly of the 3 inch size weighs 552 kg (1216 lb) in API 10K and 640 kg (1410 lb) in API 15K, and the 10 inch body weighs 3900 kg (8597 lb) in API 10K and 4941 kg (10898 lb) in API 15K. Dimension A, the face-to-face of the body, runs from 520 mm (20.47 in) for the 3 inch size to 1030 mm (40.55 in) for the 10 inch size. Lifting lugs are fitted to the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A body sub-assembly, and the technical specification gives center-of-gravity data so that crane lifts can be planned.
The instruction manual appendix for the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A sets out the procedure for each part. On the Masoneilan 41005 API 6A, seat ring gaskets, lip seals and the body gasket must always be replaced after disassembly, the body and cage seating surfaces may be dressed by no more than 0.25 mm (0.010 in) for 3 and 4 inch valves and 0.4 mm (0.015 in) for 6 to 10 inch valves, and the plug stem is pinned with torque values of 250 N.m (184 ft-lb) or 800 N.m (590 ft-lb) depending on stem diameter. A polymeric seal ring may be heated to ease installation but must not exceed 180°C (356°F). Packing is a carbon core packing with carbon-graphite anti-extrusion rings, and low emission Low-E packing is available.

The Masoneilan 41005 API 6A is intended for high pressure control duties where an ASME flanged body cannot be used or where the plant specification requires API 6A equipment: gas injection and gas lift manifolds, high pressure separator and test separator letdown, produced water injection, choke-style control on production headers and the control of pressurized process skids. Sour oil and gas fields in the interior of Oman call for the FF or Inconel 718 material classes, and the large Sohar and Salalah industrial zones need high pressure control valves for gas treatment and utility systems.
