Masoneilan 71000 Series Heavy-Duty Streamlined Angle Control Valve

Description

Overview

The Masoneilan 71000 Series is a single-ported, heavy top-guided angle control valve from Baker Hughes built for the dirtiest end of the refinery: the “bottom-of-the-barrel” residues that are fed to delayed cokers, visbreakers and flexi-cokers, and the sand-laden bitumen handled by crude oil upgraders. These fluids crystallize and become highly erosive, and the Masoneilan 71000 is designed so that the valve body, plug and guiding survive them without relying on downstream quenching alone. Baker Hughes lists the series as its Visbreaker service valve.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the Masoneilan 71000 Series Heavy-Duty Streamlined Angle Control Valve to refining, upgrading and gasification projects across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Our instrumentation and valve engineers in Muscat help project teams confirm body material, trim protection and actuator thrust, and every order is supported with genuine Baker Hughes documentation.

Operating Principle

The key idea behind the Masoneilan 71000 is to avoid giving erosive particles anything to hit. The streamlined angle body has interior contours that minimize and prevent particulate build-up against the valve walls; because the fluid changes direction less abruptly, particles in the stream release less impact energy against the valve, which extends useful life in harsh service. The plug works against a threaded seat ring, and the plug and port together form an outlet venturi flow path.

Coking and crystallization are handled mechanically. The plug is a solid stainless steel base with a hardened surface and is guided heavily at both plug and stem, so that when it is driven by a high-force actuator it can break through any residual formation. Optional flushing connections on the body, and optionally on the bonnet, introduce quench or flushing medium to prevent coke formation or particle impregnation in the guiding area, which avoids binding or sticking of the plug. For high-pressure duty an equalizing connection on the bonnet can balance the off-balance force that results from single-seated construction.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 71000

The Masoneilan 71000 Series is a 90-degree streamlined angle design in sizes from 1 to 12 inches (25 to 300 mm), with flanged ratings from ANSI Class 150 to 2500, JIS 10k to 63k and PN 10 to 400 listed in the technical specification, where the 1-inch size is limited to ANSI Class 150 to 600. Body and bonnet materials in the technical specification are carbon steel (WCC), low-temperature carbon steel (LCC), chrome-moly (WC9), 316 stainless steel and 347 stainless steel, with bolted standard or bolted extension bonnets. A venturi-style seat liner protects the high-velocity outlet area where particulate content is exceptional, and a series of reduced-area trims gives a wide flow range in every body size.

Packing is PTFE-based or graphite, with standard-bonnet temperature limits in the technical specification of −46°C to +343°C for PTFE-based packing and up to +566°C for graphite. The Baker Hughes product page also mentions low-emission packing, but the technical specification gives no emission class, so any ISO 15848 or fugitive-emission requirement is confirmed with the factory at quotation. Actuation is by Model 51/52/53 piston cylinder actuators or Model 87/88 spring-diaphragm actuators with an optional handwheel or hand jack, and the high-thrust options are what allow Class V shutoff to be reached on a valve whose standard leakage rating is Class IV.

Key Features

These design points set the Masoneilan 71000 apart from a general-purpose globe valve:

  • A streamlined angle body interior is shaped to minimize particulate build-up and reduce impact energy against the valve walls.
  • A solid stainless steel plug base with a hardened surface resists erosion and is robust enough to break through residual coke or crystal formation.
  • Heavy port and stem guiding reduces trim vibration for longer installed life under severe service.
  • Optional flushing connections on the body and bonnet help prevent coke formation and plug sticking.
  • A venturi-style seat liner protects the outlet where the process fluid carries exceptional particulate loading.
  • An equalizing connection on the bonnet is available for high-pressure applications.
  • Sour-service construction is available using materials and methods in accordance with ANSI/NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-1 and MR0103.
  • Class IV shutoff is standard, and high-thrust actuation is offered to meet IEC 60534-4 and ANSI/FCI 70.2 Class V.

Industrial Applications

Baker Hughes names crude oil refining, including delayed cokers, visbreakers and flexi-cokers, crude oil upgraders processing bitumen from tar sands, and gasifiers as the core applications for the Masoneilan 71000. The common thread is a hot, viscous, particle-laden stream that crystallizes or cokes if the valve cannot clear itself. In the Sultanate of Oman, the relevant opportunities are refinery residue-conversion units, heavy-oil developments and gasification or upgrading projects, where unplanned valve outages on a coker or visbreaker unit are costly and a streamlined angle body with flushing provisions is a practical specification.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 71000 Series to EPC contractors, licensors and refinery maintenance teams throughout Oman and the GCC, including industrial developments in the Sohar and Salalah economic zones. Because these valves depend on high-force actuation, we also supply Type 51/52/53 piston actuators, Type 87/88 spring-diaphragm actuators and the SVI3 digital valve positioner to complete the control loop.

About brand
Masoneilan has built control valves since 1882, and its Camflex eccentric plug rotary valve and 21000 series globe valve are fixtures in refineries, gas plants and power stations. Every valve carries a serial number and a long model number that defines the actuator, body and trim. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Masoneilan control valves, actuators, regulators, positioners and level instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. We source complete valves as well as Masoneilan spare parts against that nameplate data.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series

The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.

Where Masoneilan valves are used

Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.

Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need

For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.
