Overview
The Masoneilan 75000 Series is an erosion- and flashing-resistant tank level control valve from Baker Hughes, designed primarily for level control and tank drain duty with the corrosive or viscous fluids found in the PTA (purified terephthalic acid) chemical industry. In that process, slurries crystallize inside vessels and can form a solid layer at the drain connection; the Masoneilan 75000 is built to throttle through that layer rather than clog. The series has a long record in highly corrosive and erosive applications and is typically mounted directly on the side or bottom of the tank.

Operating Principle
The Masoneilan 75000 uses a fully ported sweep angle body with a contoured gallery that reduces body pressure losses and helps mitigate erosion from direct impingement of particles in the flow path. The large, low-velocity gallery keeps particles from striking the trim directly. The plug and stem are a single piece, with a robust surface and guiding fins, and the plug length is custom designed so that the seat sits flush with the inside of the tank shell; with high-force actuation, the plug can break across a solid layer of crystallized fluid that has built up in the tank.
Guiding is heavy. The stem is guided at the top through a stem bearing, and the plug is port guided with flutes along its full stroke length, which reduces trim vibration and fatigue and extends installed life under severe service. The packing is a wiper design for low-friction throttling, and optional flushing and purge ports keep slurry away from the guiding area. Flow can run flow-to-open (filling) or flow-to-close (draining), and the characteristic is linear with a Cv ratio of 50:1.
Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 75000
The Masoneilan 75000 Series is a cast angle body in 90, 120 and 135 degree sweep configurations with a split-body design and bottom-entry trim access, so no separate bonnet is needed; this removes weight and saves space in tight tank-side installations. The technical specification lists sizes from 1 to 18 inches (DN 25 to 450), ASME Class 150 to 1500 with raised-face or ring-type joint flanges (Class 900 to 1500 from 2-inch sizes), and a temperature range from −29°C to 360°C (−20°F to 680°F). The latest design adds extended guiding along the stem and plug to support the heavy plug in horizontal installations.
Body materials are 316 stainless steel, 304 stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, titanium and Hastelloy C, selected to suit the corrosive service; a typical PTA process diagram in the specification shows valves in titanium, Hastelloy and stainless steel in different stages of the process. The seat ring is a quick-change, single-seating-surface design, standard seat leakage is Class IV with Class V available through high-thrust actuation, and actuation is by Model 51/52/53 piston actuators with an optional handwheel or hydraulic hand jack. Steam jacket options (semi or full) and an extension bonnet are listed in the numbering system.

Industrial Applications
Baker Hughes names tank level control, reactor level control, tank bottom drain, erosive slurry and crystallizing fluid control as the applications for the Masoneilan 75000, and the PTA and petrochemical industries as its home sectors. A typical PTA plant moves terephthalic acid slurry through oxidation crystallizers, purification crystallizers and a hydrogenation reactor, and level in each vessel has to be controlled with a valve that will not plug when the slurry crystallizes. Where chemical and petrochemical developments in Oman, including those in the Sohar and Salalah zones, involve corrosive or crystallizing slurries, the same valve geometry applies.
