Masoneilan 37002 Model 33 Actuator Configuration (MiniTork II)

Description

Overview

This page covers one specific configuration of the MiniTork II: the 37002 valve fitted with the Model 33 spring-diaphragm actuator, as documented in its instruction manual. For the family overview (sizes, body materials, liners, ratings and Cv data) see the Masoneilan 37002 Series MiniTork II Butterfly Control Valves page.

For the heavy duty actuator version, see the Masoneilan 37002 with Model 35 actuator.

The Masoneilan 37002 Model 33 is the MiniTork II flangeless butterfly control valve fitted with the Model 33 spring-diaphragm actuator, as described in the Baker Hughes instruction manual Rev. B. In the 37002 numbering system, actuator code 33 means a spring-diaphragm actuator with air-to-extend action only, supplied with or without an auxiliary handwheel, and the body series is 37 with the first design digit identifying an unlined body (1) or an elastomer-lined body (2). The valve is rated to ASME 300 lb and mounts between flanges rather than carrying its own,.

Seven Star LLC is the trusted supplier for Masoneilan in the Sultanate of Oman and supplies the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33 for water, chemical and utility lines across the GCC. Our Muscat engineers can decode the numbering on the identification tag to confirm the actuator mounting position, valve action and lining, so a replacement or spare can be quoted from the nameplate without a site visit.

Mounting Positions and Valve Action of the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33

The numbering system of the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33 encodes six actuator mounting positions. Positions 1 and 2 place the actuator horizontal above the centre line, 3 and 4 place it vertical above centre, and 5 and 6 place it horizontal below centre. Odd numbers give air-to-close action, in which the valve closes on stem extension, and even numbers give air-to-open action, in which it opens on stem extension. Vertical positions 3 and 4 are marked as the standard actuator mounting arrangement, and unnumbered positions correspond to the numbered ones when the valve is rotated 180 degrees in the line.

The manual states that the valve may be installed with the process fluid flowing in either direction, but the actuator must stay in one of the recommended positions. Regardless of valve action, the valve should be installed with the vane in the closed position, and for lined valves the closed position is the one where the vane makes full contact with the liner. If a handwheel is fitted, it is used to close the vane. Otherwise a portable regulated air supply can close it, with only enough pressure to bring the vane into full contact with the liner.

Installation and Alignment of the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33

The valve fits between ANSI 125, 150, 250 and 300 lb flanges and DIN ND 10, 16, 25 and 40 metric flanges. Special bosses on the body centre it in the line and stop it rotating before the bolts are tightened, and the manual suggests fitting the lower flange bolting first as a cradle. Gaskets are used for unlined valves only, because the elastomer liner is flangeless and acts as its own controlled-compression gasket. After installation the vane is rotated by hand through its 90 degree arc to prove clearance, and the manual says it must not be stroked with the actuator or handwheel until that check is done.

Pipe condition decides the flange choice for the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33. The manual gives dimensions for standard schedule 40 steel pipe in sizes 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch, heavy wall schedule 80 pipe, thin wall stainless pipe and tubing. Weld neck flanges are preferred, slip-on and screwed flanges are not recommended with lined valves, and for lined valves in thin wall stainless installations the maximum line pressure for the standard arrangement is 60 psi, above which socket weld flanges or spacer rings are needed.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33

The Model 33 actuator is documented in an old and a new version, each with its own disassembly procedure, and the manual covers handwheel removal, body removal, vane and shaft pinning and reassembly of both valve body and actuator. A split clamp arm connects the actuator to the shaft through a clevis pin, which is the point where the actuator is disengaged for manual closing. The lined version carries an elastomer liner that provides the seal.

Maintenance follows the pattern of the MiniTork family: bypass and depressurise the line, mark the position of the arm on the shaft, back out the clevis pin, remove the actuator and yoke, and inspect the parts for erosion, corrosion or wear before replacing packing. The manual gives an estimated useful life of more than 25 years for the 37002 Series with annual inspection and routine maintenance, and it requires the model number, size and rating to be quoted when parts are ordered for the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33.

Key Features

The following points summarise the strengths of the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33:

  • The Masoneilan 37002 Model 33 combines a compact flangeless MiniTork II butterfly body with a spring-diaphragm actuator for air-to-extend action.
  • Unlined and elastomer-lined bodies are both covered by the same instruction manual.
  • Six actuator mounting positions give either air-to-close or air-to-open valve action to suit the piping layout.
  • The body is rated ANSI 300 lb and fits ANSI 125 to 300 lb and DIN ND 10 to 40 flanges.
  • An optional auxiliary handwheel lets the vane be closed manually, including during installation of lined valves.
  • The elastomer liner acts as its own compression gasket, so no flange gaskets are used on lined valves.
  • The manual supplies alignment data for schedule 40 and 80 pipe, thin wall stainless pipe and tubing in sizes 2 to 12 inch.
  • An estimated useful life of 25 years or more is quoted with annual inspection and routine maintenance.

Industrial Applications

The Masoneilan 37002 Model 33 is suited to throttling and shutoff of water, air and chemical lines where a compact valve with a spring-return diaphragm actuator is wanted: cooling water headers, desalination and water treatment units, effluent lines and process utilities at plants around Sohar, Salalah and Duqm. The elastomer-lined version is the one to consider for corrosive or abrasive services, while the unlined body suits clean utility service where gaskets are acceptable.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33 alongside the wider Masoneilan 37002 Series MiniTork II butterfly control valves and positioners that mount on them. Where the duty calls for a different actuator, our engineers can compare the Model 33 with the heavy duty arrangement and recommend the best fit.

About brand
Masoneilan has built control valves since 1882, and its Camflex eccentric plug rotary valve and 21000 series globe valve are fixtures in refineries, gas plants and power stations. Every valve carries a serial number and a long model number that defines the actuator, body and trim. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Masoneilan control valves, actuators, regulators, positioners and level instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. We source complete valves as well as Masoneilan spare parts against that nameplate data.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series

The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.

Where Masoneilan valves are used

Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.

Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need

For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33?
It is the MiniTork II flangeless butterfly control valve fitted with the Model 33 spring-diaphragm actuator. Actuator code 33 means air-to-extend action only, with or without an auxiliary handwheel.
How do I tell air-to-open from air-to-close on the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33?
The mounting position digit in the numbering system decides it. Odd positions 1, 3 and 5 give air-to-close, where the valve closes on stem extension, and even positions 2, 4 and 6 give air-to-open.
Which flanges fit the Masoneilan 37002 Model 33?
