Lovato GA063A Three-Pole Switch Disconnector 63 A

Description

Lovato GA063A three-pole switch disconnector, 63 A

The Lovato GA063A is a three-pole load-break switch disconnector rated 63 A for use as a main or local isolator. It carries 63 A in AC-21A, AC-22A and AC-23A at 400 and 500 V, has a rated insulation voltage of 1000 V, and mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail or by screws. Seven Star LLC supplies the GA063A in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

In the code, GA is the switch disconnector family and 063 is the rated thermal current of 63 A, Other ratings in the same group include GA016A, GA025A, GA032A, GA080A and GA125A.

What a switch disconnector does, and does not do

A switch disconnector is a manually operated device that can switch load current and then provide a visible isolating gap for safe work. It is not a protective device: it does not trip on overload or short circuit, and it relies on fuses or an upstream breaker for that. The data sheet therefore quotes a conditional short-circuit current of 50 kA when protected by gG 63 fuses and a short-time withstand of 2.5 kA for one second.

The AC-23A category is the one that matters for motors: it permits switching of motors under load, including occasional stopping of a running motor, up to 30 kW at 400 V. At 690 V the current drops to 47 A.

Where the GA063A fits

Isolators of this type sit ahead of motor starters, soft starters, drives and distribution boards so that maintenance staff can isolate equipment locally. Typical combinations are a GA063A ahead of an ADXL0075600 soft starter or a VLB drive, or in front of a motor protection breaker. The larger GA080A and GA125A handle bigger loads.

GA063A selection and ordering checklist

  • Load current and category (AC-21A, AC-22A, AC-23A)
  • System voltage; 690 V reduces the current to 47 A
  • Back-up fuses gG 63 to match the 50 kA conditional rating
  • Cable size within 4 to 70 mm² and the M8 terminal torque
  • Door-mounted handle or base-mounted operation
  • UL needs: 60 A general use at 600 V

Installation and maintenance of the GA063A

The device is fixed by screws or on a 35 mm rail. Tighten the pillar terminals to 5 to 6 Nm with a 4 mm Allen key and torque-check after the first thermal cycles. Operate the switch regularly, particularly where it is used rarely, so contacts stay clean. Dissipation per pole of 1.6 W is modest, but loose terminals at 63 A quickly overheat.

Typical GA063A applications in Oman and the GCC

Local isolators for pumps, air handlers, chillers and rooftop units, as well as incoming isolators in small panels. A lockable isolator at the machine is a standard safety requirement in many oil, gas and power facilities, so check the project procedure for lock-out arrangements and handles.

Choosing between utilisation categories for the GA063A

The three categories correspond to different duties. AC-21A is for switching resistive loads with slight overload, AC-22A for mixed resistive and inductive loads, and AC-23A for motors and other highly inductive loads. All three are rated 63 A at 400 and 500 V, but at 690 V only AC-22A and AC-23A at 47 A are listed. This means that on a 690 V system the real limit is lower than the headline 63 A, a point easily missed when the isolator is chosen from the number in the part code.

For capacitor banks or other unusual loads, the data sheet carries a field for reactive power, but that field is left empty in the data table, so ask for confirmation before using the isolator on a capacitor circuit. Also bear in mind the electrical life of 30,000 operations: an isolator used as a frequent on-off switch will reach that figure faster than one used only for maintenance isolation.

For UL-oriented projects the data sheet lists the UL98 standard, 60 A general-use current at up to 600 V, and motor ratings of 20 HP at 240 V (54 A full load) and 40 HP at 480 V (52 A). Short-circuit ratings are 100 kA at 480 V and 50 kA at 600 V with the specified fuse classes, and a minimum enclosure of 150 x 140 x 110 mm applies at rated current, which is worth checking against the size of the box planned for the isolator.

Site conditions in Oman for the GA063A

Low-voltage switching and protection devices in Oman often sit in motor control centres and outdoor panels where internal temperatures are high for much of the year. When you select the GA063A, check its rated values at your real ambient temperature, as stated in the manufacturer documentation, and confirm the coordination with upstream protection and with the motor or load it serves. Short-circuit levels differ from site to site, so verify the breaking capacity required at the point of installation.

Standardising ratings and coil voltages across a project reduces the number of spare part numbers that need to be stocked. Keeping a small stock of the GA063A and recording settings such as trip ranges or ramp times shortens repair work during a breakdown.

Lovato order codes describe the product. On a contactor such as BF0910A230, "BF09" is the frame and rated current (9 A in AC-3), "10" is the built-in auxiliary contact (one normally open), "A" means an AC coil and "230" is the coil voltage. The coil voltage must match the control circuit exactly, so it is the most common detail to check when replacing one. For motors, a soft starter limits the inrush current at start and stop, while a variable speed drive controls the speed continuously and saves energy on pumps and fans that do not need full flow all the time.

Where Lovato products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Lovato components are built into motor control centres, pump and HVAC panels, capacitor banks for power factor correction, generator and ATS panels, and machine control panels for industry, water and buildings.
