RFE45 relay that trips on overload and phase failure

The RFE450200 is a three-pole electronic thermal motor protection relay of the Lovato Electric RFE45 family with an adjustment range of 0.4-2 A. It watches the motor current in all three phases, trips on overload and on phase failure, and reports the state with a trip indicator and a test button.

Tripping class is selectable (5 – 10 – 20 – 30), the reset mode is manual or automatic, and the auxiliary contact block provides 1 NO and 1 NC for the control circuit. Insulation voltage is 1000 V.

Setting and selection

Choose by current window first (0.4-2 A), then by trip class (selectable (5 – 10 – 20 – 30)) and reset mode, then check that the relay mounts to the contactor you plan to use.

Short-circuit protection is separate: the datasheet quotes 6 A gG and 4 A aM as maximum fuse sizes for this relay.

Using it in a starter

Fit the relay under the contactor, set the dial, and connect the 95-96 and 97-98 contacts to the control circuit as shown on the front label and in the datasheet.

The power terminals are of screw and washer type; the datasheet table lists the temperature range and the auxiliary contact ratings.

Lovato order codes describe the product. On a contactor such as BF0910A230, "BF09" is the frame and rated current (9 A in AC-3), "10" is the built-in auxiliary contact (one normally open), "A" means an AC coil and "230" is the coil voltage. The coil voltage must match the control circuit exactly, so it is the most common detail to check when replacing one. For motors, a soft starter limits the inrush current at start and stop, while a variable speed drive controls the speed continuously and saves energy on pumps and fans that do not need full flow all the time.
