Brand: Lovato Electric
Lovato ME070RSD024 7A Electronic Reversing starter
Description
A solid-state reversing starter rated 7 A
The ME070RSD024 is an electronic reversing starter from the Lovato Electric ME range. Instead of a contactor and overload relay it uses a solid-state power stage rated 7 A (AC-3, AC-53a) at an operating voltage of 40-500 V, with the electronic thermal protection built in: protection is integrated, class 10A and the dial adjusts from 1.5-7A.
The control side runs from 24VDC. Safe torque off is not included on this code, which matters when the starter forms part of a machine safety circuit. Outputs: 1 relay output with C/O contact +2 PNP digital outputs; the datasheet gives the relay output rating as Relay output: 3A 230V AC15, 2A 24V DC13 Digital outputs: 40mA 24VDC.

Choosing function, current and supply
Pick the ME version by function (direct-on-line or reversing), by rated current (7 A) and by control supply (24VDC). The trailing characters of this code mark the control voltage; ME070RSD024 is the 24VDC version, as read from the catalogue entry.
Because there is no mechanical contact wear, the datasheet quotes electrical life of 50 million cycles and mechanical life of 15 million cycles, which suits applications with many daily starts.
Where it fits
The slim DIN-rail body suits compact motor feeders in panels for packaging, HVAC and material handling. The electronic thermal setting replaces a separate overload relay, so check that the dial range fits the motor nameplate current.
The unit weighs 300 g, mounts vertically on a DIN rail and uses screw terminals. Upstream short-circuit protection is still required; see the instruction manual for approved fuse or breaker types.
For panel design and commissioning, the practical figures to keep at hand are: operating temperature (min) -25 °C; operating temperature (max) +70 °C; storage temperature (min) -25 °C; storage temperature (max) +80 °C; operating position, normal Vertical; fixing 35mm DIN rail (IEC/EN/BS 60715); weight 300 g. These come straight from the datasheet and are repeated here so that the key installation limits are visible without opening the PDF.
Selection checks for a reversing motor feeder
Read the motor nameplate before choosing the ME070RSD024. The full-load current must fall inside the 1.5-7A thermal adjustment range, and the motor supply voltage must be within the 40-500 V operating voltage. Consider the type of load as well: frequent reversing, long run-up times or high-inertia loads can call for a review of the trip class and of the starter rating, so describe the duty cycle in detail when the application is borderline.
Check the control side next. The auxiliary supply is 24VDC, so the panel needs a stable DC source with enough capacity for all starters and other devices on the same circuit. Plan how the forward and reverse commands will come from the PLC or pushbuttons, and decide what the relay output and the two PNP digital outputs should signal to the control system, for example a trip or a running status, as described in the Lovato manual.
Panel installation and wiring
Mount the starter vertically on a 35 mm DIN rail, as the datasheet specifies, and leave space around it so that heat from the power stage can escape, especially when several units are placed side by side. Select the upstream short-circuit protection from the types approved in the instruction manual and size the cables for the motor current and the protective device. Keep 24VDC control wiring separate from the motor power wiring, and tighten the screw terminals to the torque given in the manual.
Because the frontal and terminal protection is IP20, the starter must be installed inside an enclosure that provides the protection needed for the location. Pollution degree 2 also assumes a reasonably clean environment inside the panel.
Commissioning and functional checks
Set the thermal protection dial to the motor nameplate current. With the motor uncoupled where possible, test forward and reverse commands and confirm that the shaft turns in the correct direction for each one; if not, correct the phase sequence at the motor side with the power isolated. Check that the PLC receives the expected signals from the outputs, and simulate a trip condition where it is safe to do so to confirm that the control system reacts correctly. If the starter is intended to be part of a machine safety function, verify the exact safety capability of the supplied unit in the Lovato documentation before relying on it.
Panel conditions in Oman and the GCC
The starter is rated up to +70 °C ambient and 20-90 % relative humidity, but panels in Omani pump stations, farms and industrial units can still reach high internal temperatures in summer, and dust and moisture enter easily through poorly sealed doors. Ventilate or cool the enclosure, keep filters clean, and inspect terminals for discolouration or loosening during routine maintenance. In coastal locations, watch for corrosion inside the panel and keep cable entries sealed.
