Lovato SM1P1400 Motor Protection Circuit Breaker 9-14 A

Description

Lovato SM1P1400 motor protection circuit breaker, 9 to 14 A

The Lovato SM1P1400 is a three-pole motor protection circuit breaker with a thermal adjustment range of 9 to 14 A and a magnetic trip at 13 times the rated current of 14 A. It is the middle of the SM1P family and suits motors of about 5.5 kW at 400 V. Seven Star LLC supplies the SM1P1400 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

SM1P1400 is read as the SM1P family and 1400 for 14.00 A. The ratings of this part show a feature of the family: the breaking capacity falls as the current rating rises, from 100 kA for the small SM1P0160 to 25 kA at 400 V here, and further to 15 kA on the SM1P2500.

Reading the SM1P1400 breaking capacity

At 400 V the SM1P1400 can break 25 kA (Icu), but the service breaking capacity Ics is only 12.5 kA, which means that after a fault of that size the breaker might not remain fit to carry on without inspection. At 440 and 500 V the Icu falls to 10 kA and at 690 V to 3 kA. The DC breaking capacity is listed as zero, so the breaker must not be used to interrupt DC circuits.

If the fault level at the board is higher than the figures above, a back-up fuse or an upstream moulded-case breaker has to be included. The UL table names a 100 A class J fuse as the protection for both motor disconnect and group motor installation duty, with 30 kA at 240 V to 600 V.

How the SM1P1400 fits in a starter

The thermal element is the one to set. At full load of a motor of roughly 12 A the dial is turned to that value; the breaker then protects against overload and loss of phase, and the instantaneous trip around 182 A deals with short circuits. Together with a BF1810A230 (18 A AC-3) contactor, the SM1P1400 forms a complete combination starter for a 5.5 kW pump, and the contactor allows remote start and stop.

SM1P1400 selection and ordering checklist

  • Nameplate current between 9 and 14 A
  • Fault level against 25 kA Icu at 400 V, and 12.5 kA Ics
  • Back-up fuse if the fault level is higher
  • Voltage system: 3 kA at 690 V is low
  • AC only: no DC breaking capacity
  • Contactor with a matching AC-3 rating

Installation and maintenance of the SM1P1400

Screw or rail mount, any plane allowed, vertical normal. The two-conductor terminals are tightened between 2.5 and 3 Nm with a PH2 screwdriver. After a short-circuit trip, inspect the unit and the downstream cables before resetting. Retighten terminals at annual shutdown because 14 A through loose lugs causes heat.

Typical SM1P1400 applications in Oman and the GCC

Mid-size pumps in water distribution, fans in plant rooms, compressors for workshops and conveyors are typical loads. In the Gulf climate, board temperature is the issue: the breaker is compensated up to +50 °C, and above that its trip point shifts, so derate for hot enclosures.

SM1P range around the SM1P1400

Part Range Icu at 400 V
SM1P1000 6.3 to 10 A 100 kA
SM1P1400 9 to 14 A 25 kA
SM1P1800 13 to 18 A 25 kA
SM1P2500 20 to 25 A 15 kA

Setting the SM1P1400 for a real motor

Take a 5.5 kW, 400 V, four-pole motor with a nameplate current of 11.3 A. The thermal dial is set to 11.3 A, which sits comfortably inside the 9 to 14 A band, and the magnetic trip stays at 182 A, well above the usual starting current of six to seven times full load, about 80 A. If the motor takes a very long run-up, such as a fan with high inertia, the class 10A curve may trip during starting and the setting should be reviewed together with the load, since raising the dial to hide the problem leaves the motor unprotected.

When a motor is replaced by a larger one, remember that the breaker band ends at 14 A. A 7.5 kW motor draws about 15 A, which is outside this part and calls for the next band, the SM1P1800 at 13 to 18 A. Writing the setting on the panel label helps maintenance staff notice when someone has changed it.

Site conditions in Oman for the SM1P1400

Low-voltage switching and protection devices in Oman often sit in motor control centres and outdoor panels where internal temperatures are high for much of the year. When you select the SM1P1400, check its rated values at your real ambient temperature, as stated in the manufacturer documentation, and confirm the coordination with upstream protection and with the motor or load it serves. Short-circuit levels differ from site to site, so verify the breaking capacity required at the point of installation.

Standardising ratings and coil voltages across a project reduces the number of spare part numbers that need to be stocked. Keeping a small stock of the SM1P1400 and recording settings such as trip ranges or ramp times shortens repair work during a breakdown.

Lovato order codes describe the product. On a contactor such as BF0910A230, "BF09" is the frame and rated current (9 A in AC-3), "10" is the built-in auxiliary contact (one normally open), "A" means an AC coil and "230" is the coil voltage. The coil voltage must match the control circuit exactly, so it is the most common detail to check when replacing one. For motors, a soft starter limits the inrush current at start and stop, while a variable speed drive controls the speed continuously and saves energy on pumps and fans that do not need full flow all the time.

Where Lovato products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Lovato components are built into motor control centres, pump and HVAC panels, capacitor banks for power factor correction, generator and ATS panels, and machine control panels for industry, water and buildings.
