Hypertherm XPR170 X-Definition Plasma Cutting System

Description

X-Definition cut quality from thin sheet to mid-range plate

The Hypertherm XPR170 is a 170 A mechanized plasma system for CNC cutting tables. It uses Hypertherm’s X-Definition processes to cut mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium with low angularity and minimal dross, delivering consistent ISO range 2 results on thin mild steel and extended range 3 on thicker mild steel and stainless. Production piercing reaches 35 mm in mild steel, and the system severs up to 60 mm.

Ramp-down error protection, automatic monitoring with specific fault codes, the EasyConnect torch lead and the QuickLock electrode reduce consumable damage and changeover time. Manual Set-Mode allows gouging or off-table bevelling without CNC integration.

Choosing the gas console

Four gas connect consoles are offered. The Core console handles mild steel and the basic stainless and aluminium processes with oxygen, air and nitrogen. CorePlus adds an argon supply used for better marking and argon-assist piercing. The Vented Water Injection console adds nitrogen-plasma with water shield processes that give clean edges on stainless and aluminium up to 38 mm, and OptiMix adds H2-Ar-N2 mixed-gas cutting. All consoles are controlled from the CNC, so cut charts are selected by material and thickness rather than set by hand.

The XPR170 suits fabricators whose work is mostly below 25 mm and who need sharp hole quality and bevel-ready edges. Shops that regularly cut thicker plate should compare the XPR300 and XPR460, which use the same family of gas consoles. As an example of the stainless steel range, the brochure lists 20 mm cut at about 978 mm/min with nitrogen plasma and water shield at 170 A on the VWI and OptiMix consoles, and 38 mm at 434 mm/min.

The power supply is lifted by its top eye or by fork truck through the base slots, and needs clearance for forced-air cooling. Before installation, confirm the supply voltage and the rating of the incoming breaker with Hypertherm for the chosen model, plan the routing of torch leads and gas hoses between power supply, gas console and torch, and provide fume extraction suitable for the materials being cut.

About brand

Plasma cutting is the field Hypertherm has worked in since 1968, from Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. Its systems range from air plasma units carried by hand to mechanized plasma for CNC tables, backed by CNC controls, nesting software and torch consumables.

Seven Star LLC lists Hypertherm plasma cutting systems from the Powermax, HPR and XPR families and supplies them to fabricators and maintenance shops in Oman.

Hypertherm plasma families listed here

The number in each Hypertherm model name is its output current class in amperes:

  • Powermax30 XP and Powermax125: air plasma systems, from portable to heavy duty
  • Powermax65 SYNC and Powermax105 SYNC: the SYNC generation of Powermax
  • HPR400XD: HyPerformance mechanized plasma
  • XPR300: X-Definition mechanized plasma

The manufacturer also lists the Powermax45 and 85 SYNC, XPR170 and XPR460, HPR800XD and MAXPRO200, together with Duramax torches, EDGE Connect CNC and ProNest software.

Where Hypertherm systems are used

Hypertherm names heavy equipment, industrial pressure vessels, job shops, steel service centers, shipbuilding and structural steel as its main industries. Powermax units are used for hand cutting and gouging in workshops and on site, and can also be run on a cutting table with a machine torch. HPR and XPR systems are built into CNC machines for production cutting of plate, a common setup in GCC fabrication yards.

Ordering Hypertherm equipment and consumables: what we need

For a system, send the model, the input voltage and phases at your site, the torch type (hand or machine) and the lead length. Hypertherm sells most systems under a configuration part number, so send that number if you have it. For consumables, send the system model, the torch model, the cutting current and the process (cutting, gouging, shielded or fine cut), or simply the part numbers printed on the old parts. For mechanized systems, tell us the make of the cutting table and CNC.
