Endress+Hauser NMS83 Proservo Stainless Servo Tank Gauge

Description

Endress+Hauser NMS83 Proservo stainless steel servo tank gauge

The Endress+Hauser NMS83 is the stainless steel member of the Proservo NMS8x servo tank gauge series. It measures liquid level, interface, tank bottom and density with the same ±0.4 mm level accuracy as the aluminium NMS80, but the process section, flange and displacer options are built around 316/316L and hygienic requirements. The manufacturer positions it for alcohols, beverages and similar products where wetted parts, polished displacers and easy cleaning matter.

Seven Star LLC supplies NMS83 gauges in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat. Because the NMS83 is configured from ordering features, we need your tank and product data before we can quote the correct wire, displacer and flange.

Reading the NMS83 configuration

  • Housing (feature 070): option AC is a coated aluminium transmitter with a 316/316L process section; option BC is a transmitter and process section in 316/316L, about 7.8 kg heavier.
  • Wire (feature 110): 16 m PFA-coated 316L wire or 22 m Alloy C276 wire.
  • Displacer (feature 120): 316L, polished 316L, Alloy C276 or PTFE, in 30, 50, 70 or 110 mm sizes, including a hygienic white PTFE type.
  • Flange (feature 140): 316/316L flanges in ASME, EN, JIS and JPI standards.

What makes the NMS83 different from other Proservo gauges

The measuring principle is identical: a displacer on a wire, a stepping motor and a magnetic coupling that keeps the wetted drum section away from the electronics. What changes with NMS83 is the material set. All process-wetted parts are 316/316L, Alloy C276 or PTFE, and the datasheet offers polished 316L cylindrical and conical displacers and a white hygienic PTFE displacer. That combination lets the gauge sit on tanks that hold alcohol, food-grade liquids or aggressive chemicals without introducing aluminium into the process area.

The wire choice is also narrower than on the NMS80: 16 m or 22 m rather than up to 36 m. For taller tanks, the NMS80 or a radar solution should be considered instead.

Displacer selection for NMS83

The datasheet gives a recommendation by application. For non-viscous liquids such as clear alcohol, a 50 mm 316L displacer is recommended for product level, interface and density; a 70 mm conical displacer also works well. For viscous liquids a 50 mm PTFE displacer is recommended for product level only, and interface or density measurement is not recommended. Larger diameters generally improve accuracy, and cylindrical shapes with rounded ends move through liquids with less resistance, which speeds interface measurement.

Option Displacer Size
1AC 316L cylindrical 50 mm
1BE 316L conical 70 mm
4AC 316L polished cylindrical 50 mm
4AE 316L polished conical 70 mm
2AC PTFE cylindrical 50 mm
5AC PTFE cylindrical, hygienic white 50 mm
3AC Alloy C276 cylindrical 50 mm

Selection and ordering checklist for NMS83

  • Product, density range and viscosity, to pick the displacer material and diameter.
  • Tank height, to confirm the 16 m or 22 m wire is sufficient.
  • Whether polished or hygienic white wetted parts are required by the process.
  • Nozzle flange standard and size, all supplied in 316/316L.
  • Housing version: aluminium transmitter with stainless process section, or all stainless.
  • Power supply, protocol and I/O modules, and any hazardous-area approval.
  • Accuracy class, calibration certificate type and weights-and-measures need.
  • Tank type: fixed roof, pressurized, or with agitator; this decides guide-system advice.

Installation, commissioning and care of the NMS83

Follow the tank-type table in the datasheet when planning the installation. Floating roof tanks require a stilling well, and guide wires are not allowed on pressurized tanks because they would block valve closure when the wire, drum or displacer is replaced. Fit a ball valve between nozzle and gauge so the wetted parts can be serviced without emptying the tank.

The gauge is commissioned from the local display, FieldCare or fieldbus commands. For hygienic use, plan cleaning of the displacer and wire during the normal tank cleaning cycle, and keep a spare displacer on site. Keep records of calibration points so the NMS83 can be checked against a reference level at intervals your quality system requires.

Typical NMS83 applications in Oman and the GCC

In Oman and the GCC the NMS83 is a candidate for chemical and solvent storage, specialty products, food-grade liquids and water-miscible products where stainless wetted parts are preferred over aluminium. Coastal humidity, salt air and summer heat are handled by the IP66/68 enclosure and the –40 to +60 °C ambient range. Where the main duty is crude oil or fuels, the NMS80 is usually the more economical choice.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.

Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need

The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.
