WEG CFW11 Variable Speed Drive

Description

Overview

The WEG CFW11 is a high-performance variable speed drive designed to control three-phase induction motors and WEG WMagnet permanent-magnet motors with precise torque, speed and position control. WEG built the drive for industrial and professional duty, and its high overload capacity lets one platform cover pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors, mills, centrifuges and hoisting equipment. The power range runs from 1.5 kW on single-phase 200-240 V supplies up to 630 kW on three-phase 380-480 V and 660-690 V networks, so a plant can standardise on one drive family from small utility pumps to large process machines.

Seven Star LLC supplies the WEG CFW11 to oil and gas operators, water utilities, cement plants and EPC contractors across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. As a supplier with engineering support in Muscat, our team helps buyers select the correct frame, voltage class, duty rating and accessory set, then offers technical support and spare-part planning for sites in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm and Salalah.

Operating Principle

Inside the WEG CFW11, a three-phase rectifier converts the incoming AC supply into a DC link that is smoothed by a capacitor bank and, up to frame G, by a built-in DC link inductor. An IGBT inverter bridge then synthesises a variable-voltage, variable-frequency output from 0 V up to the supply voltage and from 0 to 599 Hz, depending on the control mode and switching frequency. WEG calls its control platform Vectrue Technology, and the user can choose scalar V/F control with slip compensation, VVW voltage vector control that adapts to load and grid variations, sensorless vector control for induction motors, closed-loop vector control with an encoder, and sensorless or encoder-based vector control for WMagnet motors.

For the WEG CFW11, the practical consequence is tight process control with lower energy use. In sensorless vector mode the speed regulation is 0.5 percent of rated speed over a 1:100 range, and with an encoder the drive reaches plus or minus 0.01 percent regulation with a digital reference. The Optimal Braking function provides high braking torque in vector mode without a braking resistor, while Optimal Flux allows a high-efficiency WEG motor to deliver rated torque at low speed without forced ventilation or motor oversizing.

Engineering Design of the WEG CFW11

The WEG CFW11 is built in frames A to H. Frames A, B and C are supplied as IP21, frames D to H as IP20, NEMA1 kits are available, and an IP55/NEMA12 version for frames B to E can be installed without a panel in humid, dusty or sun-exposed areas, with a built-in switch disconnector as an option. Electronic boards carry class 3C2 conformal coating to IEC 60721-3-3 as standard, with a 3C3 extra-coating version available for corrosive atmospheres. Intelligent thermal management monitors heatsink and internal air temperatures, switches the heatsink fan automatically and lets the fan be removed for cleaning.

Control of the WEG CFW11 is handled by a 32-bit RISC control card with six isolated 24 V DC digital inputs, two differential analog inputs, two analog outputs and three NO/NC relay outputs rated 240 V AC / 2 A. Four accessory slots accept I/O expansion, encoder interfaces and communication modules, and a flash memory module stores parameters automatically. The detachable graphic keypad has soft keys, a real-time clock, a copy function and hot-swap capability, and it can be mounted on a panel door with an IP56 frame. A USB port connects the drive to WEG programming software on a laptop.

Key Features

The WEG CFW11 combines drive hardware and software features that reduce panel space, engineering time and lifetime energy cost:

  • Vectrue control offers scalar, VVW, sensorless vector and closed-loop vector modes for induction motors, plus dedicated vector modes for WMagnet permanent-magnet motors.
  • Normal duty sizing allows 110 percent overload for 60 seconds every 10 minutes, while heavy duty sizing allows 150 percent for 60 seconds and 200 percent for 3 seconds.
  • A built-in SoftPLC lets engineers program the WEG CFW11 in ladder logic with the WLP software, and the PLC11 module adds motion control, homing and network master functions.
  • The built-in DC link inductor gives a typical power factor of 0.94 on three-phase models and helps meet the harmonic requirements of IEC 61000-3-2 and 61000-3-12.
  • Plug-in modules support Modbus-RTU, Modbus-TCP, Profibus-DP-V1, DeviceNet, CANopen, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, PROFINET IO and BACnet.
  • Optional Safe Torque Off is rated category 3 / PL d to EN ISO 13849-1 and SIL 2 to IEC 62061 and IEC 61508.
  • Motor temperature monitoring with PTC, Pt-100 or KTY84 sensors is available through the IOE accessory modules.
  • Frames A to E and H can be fed from a common DC bus, so several drives in a multi-motor line can share regenerated energy.

Industrial Applications

In the Omani oil and gas sector the WEG CFW11 is a natural fit for crude transfer pumps, produced-water injection pumps, cooling fans on air coolers and instrument-air compressors, where PID control of pressure, flow or temperature cuts energy use and softens mechanical stress. The multipump control function keeps header pressure constant as demand changes, which suits the water transmission schemes, reverse osmosis desalination plants and wastewater treatment works operated across Muscat, Sohar and Salalah. The IP55 version can be mounted near pumps in plant rooms without a separate enclosure.

Heavy industry benefits from the WEG CFW11 platform as well. Cement mills and kiln fans, steel and aluminium processing lines, mining conveyors, refrigeration compressors and HVAC-R systems in district cooling plants all use the drive’s high overload capacity, encoder feedback and two simultaneous PID controllers. Seven Star LLC supplies the WEG CFW11 together with matched motors such as the WEG W22 IE3 three-phase motor, and we can also advise where an existing fleet uses the ABB ACS580 general purpose drive or the Danfoss VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 so that spares and training stay consistent across the GCC site.

About brand
WEG started in 1961 in Jaraguá do Sul, Brazil, as an electric motor builder, and motors are still what most engineers associate with the name. The same company makes variable speed drives, soft starters and other electrical equipment that work with those motors. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies WEG electric motors and drives for pumps, fans and compressors in Oman, including the W22 motor and CFW11 drive listed on this page.

WEG products listed here

W22 is WEG's line of three-phase low-voltage induction motors in IEC frame sizes. The listed motor is a 5.5 kW, 4-pole, IE3 unit in frame 132S, a typical size for pumps and fans. CFW11 is a variable speed drive for three-phase induction motors, selected by rated current and supply voltage and configured with option modules for I/O and communication.

Ordering WEG motors and drives: what we need

For a motor, a nameplate photo is best. Otherwise send power, poles, voltage and frequency, frame size, mounting (B3 foot, B5 flange or B35), efficiency class and any hazardous-area or outdoor requirement. For a CFW11, send the complete model code from the drive label and list the option modules fitted. Sites in the GCC should state the ambient temperature, since it affects sizing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What motors can the WEG CFW11 control?
The WEG CFW11 controls three-phase induction motors in V/F, VVW, sensorless vector or closed-loop vector mode, and it also drives WEG WMagnet permanent-magnet motors with or without an encoder. WEG states that the WMagnet plus CFW11 combination can deliver torque control at zero speed in sensorless mode without forced ventilation.
What is the difference between normal duty and heavy duty ratings?
Normal duty allows 110 percent of rated current for one minute or 150 percent for three seconds, once every ten minutes, and suits pumps and fans. Heavy duty allows 150 percent for one minute or 200 percent for three seconds and suits conveyors, mills, hoists and other high-inertia or high-torque loads, so the same frame carries a lower motor rating in heavy duty.
Does the WEG CFW11 need an external line reactor?
For frames A to G no additional line reactor is required, because a DC link inductor is built in and gives a typical power factor of 0.94 on three-phase models. For frame H WEG states that line reactance must be added.
Which communication protocols does the WEG CFW11 support?
USB is built in for WEG software, and plug-in modules add Modbus-RTU, Modbus-TCP, Profibus-DP-V1, DeviceNet, CANopen, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, PROFINET IO and BACnet, so the drive can join most DCS and PLC networks used in Oman and the GCC.
Can Seven Star LLC supply the WEG CFW11 in Oman?
Yes. Seven Star LLC supplies the WEG CFW11 and its accessories to customers in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm, Salalah and across the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat for selection, commissioning advice and spare parts.
