ABB AF38-30-00-13 3-Pole Contactor 18.5 kW 100-250 V

Description

AF38 contactor for 18.5 kW motors on a 45 mm frame

AF38-30-00-13 is the largest of ABB’s compact AF block contactors that share a 45 mm width. It is rated 18.5 kW (20 hp) at 400 V in AC-3 with 38 A, switches 50 A in AC-1 at 40 C, and ships without a built-in auxiliary contact. The 100…250 V coil accepts both AC and DC.

ABB’s datasheet groups it with AF09 to AF38 contactors that use the same accessories, so a panel builder can step from an 11 kW AF26 to this 18.5 kW unit without changing the footprint. In the e-catalogue the AF38-30-00-13 has the same net weight and outline as the AF26-30-00-13; what differs is the contact system.

Where AF38 fits in a motor feeder

In a typical direct-on-line starter the contactor is paired with a thermal or electronic overload relay chosen for the motor current. At 400 V the AF38 handles 38 A, so a motor of about 18.5 kW fits, but at 690 V the AC-3 rating falls to 24 A. The datasheet also lists 33 A at 500 V. Pump and fan motors in water treatment and HVAC plant commonly sit in this band.

For non-motor duty, ABB lists 50 A AC-1 at 40 C and 42 A at 60 C, so heaters and lighting banks need derating in hot cabinets. The short-time withstand is 700 A for one second, which sets how long the contactor can ride through a downstream fault before the protective device clears it.

Order code, coil options and accessories

AF38 is the frame, 30 stands for three poles, 00 means no built-in auxiliary contact, and the final pair selects the coil. Siblings in the same datasheet are -11 (24…60 V), -12 (48…130 V), -14 (250…500 V) and the AF38Z low-consumption versions 20 to 23. This page is the -13, intended for 100…250 V supplies.

Accessories include side and front auxiliary blocks and the overload relays of the TF and EF series. Because the -00 version has no auxiliary contacts, request a block if the PLC needs a feedback signal.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
