ABB AF12-30-10-13 3-Pole Contactor 5.5 kW 100-250 V

Description

AF12 contactor, the 5.5 kW workhorse with a built-in auxiliary contact

AF12-30-10-13 is the 12 A frame of the AF range: three N.O. main poles, one N.O. auxiliary contact already fitted, and the 100…250 V coil that accepts AC and DC. ABB rates it at 5.5 kW (7.5 hp) at 400 V in AC-3 and 28 A in AC-1, in a body only 45 mm wide and 77 mm deep.

The built-in contact is useful for latching and for a feedback signal to a PLC, which is why 30-10 versions are the usual choice for small motor starters, conveyor drives and fan or pump control where one extra contact is enough. For comparison, the AF09 frame on this site, AF09-30-10-11, is rated 4 kW.

What 12 A of AC-3 means for motor choice

A 5.5 kW, 400 V motor draws roughly 11 A, so the AF12 gives only a little headroom and the overload relay should be set from the motor nameplate. At 690 V the rating is 9 A, while at 500 V it is 12.5 A. For resistive loads the AC-1 value is 28 A up to 60 C, dropping to 24 A at 70 C.

The auxiliary contact itself is rated for AC-15 duty: 6 A at 24/127 V, 4 A at 220/240 V and 3 A at 400/440 V, with a 10 A gG fuse for its protection. That is enough for most relay and PLC input circuits.

Type code, coils and accessories

AF12 is the frame, 30 stands for three poles, 10 means one N.O. auxiliary contact built in (01 would be one N.C.), and 13 selects the 100…250 V coil. The datasheet’s other coil options are -11 (24…60 V), -12 (48…130 V) and -14 (250…500 V), and low-consumption AF12Z types for direct 24 V DC PLC outputs.

Terminals accept 1 to 6 mm2 rigid and 0.75 to 6 mm2 flexible conductors. Add-on auxiliary blocks fit the front and side, and thermal or electronic overload relays mount directly below.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
