Gas detector, flame detector and smoke detector types

  • Fixed point gas detectors: catalytic bead or infrared sensors for flammable gas, electrochemical cells for toxic gas and oxygen
  • Open path gas detectors: an infrared beam between transmitter and receiver that covers a fence line or a row of equipment
  • Flame detectors: UV, UV/IR and triple IR optical types
  • Aspirating smoke detectors: air is drawn through sampling pipes to a detection chamber, for control rooms, switchgear rooms and data halls
  • Portable single gas and multi gas detectors: personal monitors for confined space entry and area checks
  • Alarm sounders and beacons for hazardous areas

Certification and standards for fire and gas detectors

Detectors used in classified areas need ATEX or IECEx certification, with the protection concept, gas group and temperature class matching the area classification. The performance of flammable gas detectors is covered by IEC 60079-29-1. Flame detectors and aspirating smoke detectors for fire alarm systems are covered by EN 54-10 and EN 54-20. Devices that form part of a safety instrumented function are usually required with a SIL capability assessment to IEC 61508. Many projects in the GCC ask for FM or UL approvals as well, so name the approvals in the inquiry.

What to send for a detector quotation

Give the target gas and measuring range, the sensor technology, the output (4-20 mA, HART, relays or Modbus), the required approvals, the housing material and the cable entry thread. For a flame detector, add the fuel and the distance to be covered. For a replacement, the complete part number from the label is the best starting point. We check it against the manufacturer documentation and propose the manufacturer’s successor when the model is obsolete.

What to include in your inquiry

These details let us quote the right item the first time.

  • Hazard to detect (flammable gas, toxic gas, flame, smoke)
  • Detection principle, if specified
  • Output: 4-20 mA, relay, HART, Modbus
  • Area classification and approvals required
  • Existing controller model, for compatibility
  • Quantity and spares

Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose a catalytic bead or an infrared detector for flammable gas?
Infrared point detectors are not poisoned by silicones or sulfur compounds, work without oxygen and report a fault if the optical path is blocked, so they are preferred for hydrocarbon gases. They do not detect hydrogen, because hydrogen does not absorb infrared light. A catalytic bead sensor responds to hydrogen and to most flammable gases, but it needs oxygen and regular response checks.
Which flame detector is suitable for a hydrogen fire?
A standard triple IR detector looks for the infrared emission of hot carbon dioxide, which a hydrocarbon fire produces and a hydrogen fire does not. For hydrogen, use a UV or UV/IR detector, or a multi-spectrum IR model designed by its manufacturer for hydrogen flames. State the fuel in the inquiry. The manufacturer's performance data lists the detection distance for each fuel.
What is the difference between a point gas detector and an open path gas detector?
A point detector measures the gas concentration at its own location and reports it in percent LEL or ppm. An open path detector measures the total amount of gas along a beam that can be many meters long and reports it in LEL meters. Open path units cover perimeters and long equipment rows. Point detectors are placed close to likely leak sources. Most plants use both.
Do I need a single gas or a multi gas portable detector?
A single gas detector protects against one known hazard, typically hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide or oxygen deficiency, and is worn as a personal monitor. A multi gas detector reads several sensors at once, commonly flammable gas, oxygen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide, and is the normal instrument for confined space entry. A pumped version is needed to sample a space before entering it.
What should be checked when an obsolete gas detector is replaced by its successor?
Check the electrical interface first: two-wire or three-wire connection, source or sink current output, supply voltage and power consumption on the existing cable. Then compare the hazardous-area certification, the mounting and cable entry, and whether the controller input and alarm settings suit the new measuring range. We propose the manufacturer's successor and provide its datasheet so these points can be compared.
Do you supply fixed and portable gas detectors and flame detectors in Oman and the other GCC countries?
Yes. Seven Star LLC is based in Muscat and quotes fixed and portable gas detectors and flame detectors for buyers in Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. Buyers in other countries can also send a request. For a quotation, send the gas and range, fixed or portable type, output signal and hazardous-area approval required through the inquiry form.
Which gas and flame detector brands can Seven Star quote?
This category currently lists items from Honeywell, Dräger, General Monitors, Xtralis, Oldham, Industrial Scientific, Det-Tronics and Crowcon. Other manufacturers can be quoted on request: send the brand and the model or part number, and we will confirm whether we can source it.
