Endress+Hauser PMP63B Cerabar Pressure Transmitter

Description

Endress+Hauser PMP63B Cerabar pressure transmitter with Bluetooth and Heartbeat

The Endress+Hauser PMP63B is a digital process pressure transmitter from the newer Cerabar B generation. It measures gauge or absolute pressure with a metallic membrane and a silicon measuring element, and it can be built as a standard threaded device, as a device with a diaphragm seal, or with the Contite measuring cell for humid, condensing environments. Operation is guided by wizards on a large backlit display, with optional Bluetooth for setting up the transmitter from a phone or tablet. Seven Star LLC supplies the PMP63B in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.

Accuracy reaches ±0.05 % as standard and ±0.025 % in the Platinum version, which places the PMP63B among the more accurate industrial pressure transmitters, with pressure ranges up to 100 bar (1 500 psi).

How the PMP63B works

In the standard device the process pressure bends a metallic membrane and a fill fluid carries the force to a Wheatstone bridge on a silicon element. The device keeps a secondary containment for added integrity. With a diaphragm seal, the pressure first acts on the seal membrane, then passes through the seal fill fluid to an internal membrane and on to the measuring element, so the process never touches the cell.

The Contite cell works differently. It behaves like a gauge cell, but the measuring element sits fully protected between a process membrane and a rear membrane, so moist ambient air and condensation cannot reach it. This is intended for humid sites, frequent hot and cold cycles and temperature shocks. Alarm behaviour follows NAMUR NE 43, with a minimum alarm below 3.6 mA and an adjustable maximum alarm of 21.5 to 23 mA on the HART version.

PMP63B device versions and process options

Version What it adds Typical reason to choose it
Standard device Threaded or flush connection, metallic membrane General process pressure up to 100 bar
Diaphragm seal Compact seal, seal with temperature isolator, or seal with capillary; silicone or vegetable oil Hot, sticky, corrosive or hygienic media; vibration; hard-to-reach points
Contite cell Rear membrane that guards the element against moisture Humid or condensing locations, thermal cycling

Seal fill fluids are silicone oil (–40 to +250 °C at 1 bar abs or more, –40 to +180 °C at 0.05 bar abs) and vegetable oil (–10 to +220 °C, or –10 to +160 °C at 0.05 bar abs). Capillary armour is available in 316L, PVC-coated or PTFE-jacketed form; PVC limits the temperature, so check the armour curve. The TempC process membrane, available on selected seal designs, reduces the temperature error of the seal system.

Where the PMP63B fits in the Cerabar and Deltabar lines

The PMP63B is the pressure counterpart of the Deltabar PMD63B, which uses the same operating concept with a differential measuring cell and seals on both sides. Other transmitters in the B generation share the Heartbeat Technology package, the display and Bluetooth module, so a technician who knows one device can service the rest. For lower-cost duty without a seal, the Cerabar line also includes simpler threaded models such as the PMP11, PMP21 and PMP23, but they lack the diaphragm seal and capillary options of the PMP63B.

PMP63B selection and ordering checklist

  • Absolute or gauge measuring cell and the range, keeping normal pressure between 30 and 80 % of the span.
  • Seal or no seal: if a seal is needed, specify connection type and size, membrane material, TempC option and fill fluid.
  • Capillary or temperature isolator: length, armour and mounting bracket for hot, vibrating or remote points.
  • Output: 4 to 20 mA analog, HART, PROFIBUS PA or PROFINET over Ethernet-APL, with or without Bluetooth.
  • Housing: single or dual compartment aluminium, or single-compartment 316L hygienic housing; remote housing is also offered.
  • Approvals: ATEX, UKCA, CSA, NEPSI, INMETRO, KC, EAC and JPN approvals are listed; state the protection type you need.
  • Software package: Heartbeat Technology with Verification and Monitoring is optional.

PMP63B installation, commissioning and maintenance

Install the PMP63B with the cable entries pointing down and fit a mounting bracket when a temperature isolator or capillary is used. Support the capillary and keep its bending radius at or above 100 mm. Commission with the on-device wizard or via Bluetooth, set the range and the damping, and enable the Heartbeat package if you need documented proof tests. Heartbeat Verification checks the installed device without interrupting the process and produces a pass or fail report that can be used for traceability.

Keep the backlight and Bluetooth in mind on low-voltage loops: below 15 V the backlight switches off on HART devices, and below 12 V Bluetooth is disabled. Plan a periodic zero check, and replace the transmitter if verification fails. The datasheet allows operation up to 5 000 m above sea level.

Typical PMP63B applications in Oman and the GCC

The PMP63B suits process pressure and tank level in oil and gas processing, power plants, desalination, petrochemical units and utilities in Oman and the GCC. Diaphragm seal versions serve hot oil, bitumen, glycol and crystallising brine, while Contite devices are suited to outdoor skids where daily heat and night-time condensation would strain a conventional gauge cell. The NSF/ANSI 61 and KTW drinking-water approvals listed for the family, and the overfill-protection test noted in the datasheet, are relevant for water and storage duties. Use a sunshade for strong direct sun and keep cable glands sealed against dust and humidity.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.

Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need

The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.
