Endress+Hauser FMR30B Micropilot Radar with Local Display

Description

FMR30B Micropilot radar transmitter with on-site display

The Endress+Hauser FMR30B is a compact free-space radar for continuous level in liquids and bulk solids, built around an 80 GHz FMCW measuring system. Its distinguishing feature within the Micropilot B-series is the display on top of the housing: operators can read the level, change the language and start tests without a laptop or phone. It is a 2-wire loop-powered device with 4 to 20 mA and HART, and Bluetooth is available for wireless setup through the SmartBlue app.

Measuring range is 20 m with the 40 mm antenna and 30 m with the 80 mm antenna, accuracy is up to ±2 mm in liquids, and the housing is PBT/PC with a PVDF antenna connection and an EPDM seal. Where a unit is installed without a display being needed and the cable should be fixed, see the sister model FMR20B.

What the FMR30B display offers

The display can show one measured value, two values or a bar graph in per cent, and the colours can be inverted for bright sunlight. On versions with touch control, basic settings can be done on the device: lock or unlock, language, Bluetooth on or off, a commissioning wizard for the basic settings, reading the serial number and firmware, active diagnostics, and reset. You can also start a Heartbeat Verification and read a passed or failed result on the screen. A verification report can be generated via Bluetooth and HART.

The display can be turned in 90 degree steps to suit the installation, which helps when the unit hangs under a ceiling or beside a pipe rack. On variants without touch control, the same settings are made through FieldCare, DeviceCare or the SmartBlue app.

Choosing between FMR30B antenna and connection options

The 40 mm antenna with a G 1-1/2 or NPT 1-1/2 end thread fits small tank nozzles and has a wider 8 degree beam; the 80 mm antenna has a 4 degree beam and needs a UNI slip-on flange (3, 4 or 6 inch) as the process connection. Available accessories listed in the datasheet are a weather protective cover in PBT/PC, a G 2 securing nut, UNI adapters from G 1-1/2 to G 2 and MNPT 1-1/2 to MNPT 2, a wall bracket and the UNI slip-on flanges in polypropylene.

Antenna Thread / flange Max range Process pressure
40 mm G 1-1/2 or NPT 1-1/2 20 m –1 to 3 bar
80 mm UNI slip-on flange 3 or 4 in 30 m –1 to 1 bar
80 mm UNI slip-on flange 6 in 30 m Unpressurised

FMR30B within the Micropilot range

Within the Micropilot B-series the FMR30B is for plants that want a visible local value on a non-corrosive plastic radar, such as dosing tanks, sump pits and water-treatment channels. For solids at high temperature the FMR67B, with flanged horn or PTFE antennas, is the long-range option, while for a fixed-cable, IP68 housing the FMR20B is the sibling. All three use 80 GHz FMCW measuring technology.

FMR30B installation and maintenance

  • Mount vertically above the medium, away from inlet streams, agitator blades and tank walls; use the antenna beam calculation (beam width = distance times 0.14 for 40 mm, 0.07 for 80 mm).
  • Keep the microwave beam free of ladders, pipes and heating coils, which would give fixed false echoes.
  • Shade the unit from direct sun in hot regions, or fit the weather protective cover.
  • Observe the 250 ohm HART communication resistor when the supply impedance is low.
  • Use the display or the SmartBlue app to check diagnostic messages; remedy instructions are shown in plain text, and up to 100 events are stored.
  • Check the PVDF and EPDM materials against your medium and cleaning chemicals before ordering.

FMR30B applications in Oman and the GCC

The combination of a local readout and a corrosion-resistant plastic antenna makes the FMR30B a good match for desalination post-treatment tanks, municipal water reservoirs, wastewater lift stations, cooling-water basins and utility storage in the Gulf. Direct sunlight and heat on plant roofs are common, so a weather cover and shaded mounting position are worth planning. Seven Star LLC supplies Endress+Hauser instruments as an independent supplier in Muscat to contractors and operators across Oman and the GCC.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.

Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need

The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.

FAQ

Questions about the Endress+Hauser FMR30B Micropilot Radar with Local

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What is the main difference between the FMR30B and the FMR20B?
Both use the same 80 GHz radar technology and have the same ranges and accuracy. The FMR30B adds an on-site display, optionally with touch control, and a cable entry by M20 gland or NPT 1/2 thread, while the FMR20B has a fixed cable and an LED indicator.
02What can be done from the FMR30B display?
The display shows measured values and diagnostic messages, and with touch control lets you lock the device, choose the language, start the commissioning wizard, switch Bluetooth on or off and start Heartbeat Verification with a pass or fail message. Flow cannot be configured from the display.
03What are the antenna options of the FMR30B?
A 40 mm antenna with a G 1-1/2 or NPT 1-1/2 thread reaches 20 m, and an 80 mm antenna prepared for a UNI slip-on flange reaches 30 m. Process range is -40 to +80 °C and -1 to 3 bar for the 40 mm antenna.
04What protection rating does the FMR30B have?
The datasheet lists IP66 / NEMA Type 4X and IP67. That is a different rating from the IP68 of the fixed-cable FMR20B, so it should not be submerged for long periods.
05Does the FMR30B support open-channel flow?
Yes. The same linearisation tables as the FMR20B are included for flumes and weirs, with a totalizer. Flow must be configured through an operating tool or the SmartBlue app rather than the local display.
