Current ratings, fuses and heat loss

From the ratings table: nominal 293 A / 160 kW, light overload 278 A / 160 kW, heavy duty 246 A / 132 kW, Imax 418 A. Overload capability: 110% in light-overload use, 130% in heavy duty, each for 1 minute per 10 minutes at 40 degrees C. For North American supplies the table shows 200 Hp at 260 A (light) and 150 Hp at 240 A (heavy). Variable-torque loads such as pumps and fans normally use the light-overload column.

Fuses: 425 A gG on the IEC side, 400 A class T for UL. The drive dissipates 3936 W (13442 BTU/h) and needs 1150 m3/h of cooling air at up to 65 dBA. Ambient limits: up to +40 degrees C for frames R4 to R9 in IP21, up to +50 degrees C with derating.

The IP21 body of frame R8 is 965 mm high with glandbox (677 mm without), 300 mm wide and 393 mm deep, and weighs 69 kg. ABB offers the same drive in IP55 (+B056) measuring 965 x 300 x 452 mm and weighing 77 kg.

Options, EMC and type code

Read ACS580-01-293A-4 as series ACS580, construction 1 (wall-mounted drive), size 293A-4 where the digits are the nominal current, and voltage code 4 for 380 to 480 V. Plus codes add features, for example +K475 for FENA-21 EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and PROFINET IO, +L501 for CMOD-01 external 24 V and relays, +L523 for CMOD-02 with isolated PTC interface. The EMC category C2 is fulfilled by wall-mounted drives and cabinet-built drives up to frame R9; modules and R10 to R11 cabinets meet C3. A brake chopper is standard only up to R3; for frame R8 braking needs an external chopper and resistor.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
